Don't get me wrong, I love these guys. I am from Minneapolis and was into Lifter Puller (better live than THS). And this is my least favorite Hold Steady album. Pitchfork loving it so much is more of an image thing I think - always mentioning how they had it but nobody else did. The song 'Freakout Tent' is the worst thing Craig Finn has ever done. There is some good stuff on new album but a disapointment.

So if I don't thnk just like you and think this is the album of the year I must listen to Nelly Furtado? Wow, some belief sysytem you must have. The new CD is my least fav Craig Finn release but it's still heads and shoulders above The Killers finest moments.
As for the claims that The Hold Steady ripped of The Killers is a laugh. Let's see here... I heard the Hold Steady demos summer 2003. The internet tells me The Killer first release was 2004. Lifter Puller's first 7" was '95. Hm.

I love The Hold Steady and think the first two records were great. First time through the new one, I think it is OK. I will give it a lot more listens and hear the new stuff live tomorrow night. They are a good band. Have a few drinks, loosen up, and go see them live. That's where they really excel.

I don't mind the bar rock sound, that's actually kind of a positive though my preference is for a trashier sound. I like my rock like I like my vag, loose and sloppy. Well, not really. About the vag anyway.

It's pretty clear that Separation Sunday > Almost Killed Me > Boys and Girls in America. The order of the first two could be swapped, but Boys and Girls is definitely the weakest of the three.
Anyway, that seems to be the consensus. Let's see if Pitchfork rates it appropriately.

I actually think that this one has the least skip-worthy tracks of any of the Hold Steady's albums. Then again, I don't have a blindingly irrational hate for bands that are even remotely touted by the "evil" Pitchfork.
Rock was the first thing I was ever into and there is nothing better to me than a good rock album. This is a good rock album.
