downloaded this a few weeks ago. sad to say, i am not digging it too much. would really like to know other people's opinions.
for me, the highlight is "Guilt Is a useless emotion" which, I believe, features the a scissor sister. nice tech-pop, almost minimal house-y at times.
Score = 0
I agree with Richard, in that "Guilt Is A Useless Emotion" is probably the best track on the album (although that's a horrible name). However, I like the rest of the album too-- I think "Waiting For the Sirens Call" is a good song, and I like alot of the others. It took me a minute to get into it, I had to listen to it a few times, but after spending a car rides with it spinning, I began to dig it. But then again, I liked Get Ready, which most New Order fans seem to hate (sorry, too young to really get into old school New Order, perhaps I'll check out Republic or the older records for comparison sometime soon). Anyway, that's my $0.02.

Hi, i've uploaded the New Order album as a Windows Playlist to my site so people can easily listen to it without having to click each single file (http://takeyourmedicinemp3.blogspot.com), but the download is limited, so if you like it, you may want to upload it yourself?
Mike.

re: Dan
Even Republic's an iffy album. Download "Temptation" immediately (definitely make sure it's not that horrible Moby cover) and enjoy the genius of pre-90's New Order. That's my $0.02 (Canadian).

Do not pass Go, do not purchase "Republic", go directly to the record store (or your preferred P2P) and acquire "Substance."

I think the first 4 songs are incredible. Mind you I didn't feel that way over a month ago, but I've since let the songs seep in and make me want to hear them constantly. I saw it takes a couple of plays to realize how much you like it. That being said, I still think Power Corruption & Lies is their best album.
Score = 0
Think Bernie's been taking voice lessons? - he sounds terrific, especially on the title track!
Score = 0
"Power, Corruption, and Lies" is excellent as well. "Republic" sucks, except for "Regret." I'm not normally one for greatest hits comps, but "Substance" (esp. disc one) is wall-to-wall classics.

As much as i am digging this, i like Get Ready better.

as a proud card-carrying 'old-school' NO fan, i've got to say this album is better than i originally wanted to give it credit for. it's waaaaay better than the soul-crushingly bad 'republic' and even the overrated 'get ready' both. 'hey now what you doing' gets me going (awesome lyrics) and the title cut is very classic by-the-numbers NO. but then the single 'krafty' is also rather tasty. and i've gotta give them mad props for the Jesus & Mary Chain noise-a-billy of "working overtime." the more i listen to this album the better it gets. perhaps we can bridge the gap between old and new school new order fans with this one. See you at their coachella set!

My favorite New Order record isn't actually by New Order... Rather, it's the first record by Electronic, Bernard Sumner's side-project with Johnny Marr from the Smiths. What do they sound like? Well... they sound pretty much like New Order, actually. But it's a great, sadly neglected album! You might remember the single "Getting Away With It", which got a little play on alt-radio back in the day.
Score = 0
The eponymous album by Electronic is good as long as you remove any and all traces of Bernard Sumner rapping. Yes, *rapping*..
Score = 0
its all about : turn, waiting for the sirens call and dracula's castle... in that order... oh, and then, after like 40 listens krafty actually works.
Score = 0
gotta agree with redboy, those are my favorites off the album too. i'd like some of the others even more if it weren't for lyrics like, "you have the brightest future / writing songs on your computer". *CRINGE* new order's my favorite band, but even the backstreet boys could pull better lyrics out of their arse.
Score = 0
Utter crap. Worse than a New Order cover band. I guess you must have all had your first sexual experience to Blue Monday or something...

re: pageblank
Thanks, I will definitely download some pre-90's New Order to get the full experience. When you think about it, I probably should have done it a while ago.

As an old school new order fan, I was totally looking forward to this. It is so awful. The electronic beats were completely superfluous, like they were added in as an afterthought. And, wow, how bad are the lyrics? One of the great things about old New Order was the complexity (sound and lyrics) of their music. I can't believe this jingly, poppy, frothy album is New Order
Score = 0
well, i no longer expect New Order to live up to my expectations (set by "Movement", "Lowlife", etc)
I just want a "Regret" every once and a while.
Also, I think I am the only real N.O. fan who felt that "Technique" was a fantastic record. Still rates up there as one of my favorites. Of course, that's based almost exclusively on the singles ("Round and Round", "Fine Time") but what New Order record isn't?
Score = 0
I actually liked Technique, too. I used to think NO could get no worse than "World in Motion," and now I think the new album would be better if it was only as bad as "world in motion"
Score = 0
I loved Technique too. I was 15 when it came out so it really has alot of nostalgic value for me added to that as well.
I am much more of an old school NO fan too but come on, this album isn't shit. It may not be Movement and Low Life, but it's still a great record. Maybe my expectations have been lowered to, I don't even own Republic, but I still like some of the songs on this album. Who's Joe, Krafty, Turn are all great NO songs. I could easily do without Jetstream and Working Overtime, but it seems as of late NO doesn't put out complete albums (PC&L and Brotherhood were complete, actually most of their older stuff is), but Get Ready and this album have some standouts and that just seems to be how it is these days.
Score = 0
"my expectations have been lowered too"
I hate typos, but they seem to love me!
Score = 0
i think this new record is fantastic, and that's coming from someone who thinks that "technique" is not only new order's best, but one of the best records of ALL TIME. i could listen to "technique" on repeat for 839584 days straight and never tire of it. not a bad song on the album.
Score = 0
I'm totally shocked by all the negative from people about this record. I think it's their most fully realized record in years, particularly "Guilt Is A Useless Emotion", "Krafty", "Waiting For The Sirens' Call", "Jetstream Lover", and "Turn".
Fans of New Order know that a New Order record with 4 good/great songs on it is amazing, but one with 5 good songs on it is a New Order masterpiece. Yes, they have cheesy lyrics, but their lyrics have *always* been somewhat cheesy. Come on...Bizarre Love Triangle? Hello? "Every time I think of you/I feel shot right thru with a bolt of blue" is not some fucking Bob Dylan lyric, people.
The other thing is, like many of you, I was initially disappointed. But I kept listening to this. It reminds me so much of old New Order (particularly "Waiting For The Siren's Call" and "Krafty") that it's hard not to love it. If you already didn't like New Order, then I can understand not liking this. But fans of old New Order, try to listen with a less-critical ear. You'll figure out that it's signature New Order stuff -- right down to stealing a riff from R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion".
Score = 0
Ok, EJ, you convinced me. I'll listen to it some more and see if I have a change of heart. Now, about their lyrics. No, they were never deep, but they were always complex, even when they were about mundane things. They were dark, lonely and brooding without being overdone and depressing. This album seems more Erasure-ish in lyrical content.
Score = 0
guilt is not a useless emotion, it strengthens social bonds... that title goes beyind cheesy, it is just wrong... they have too many albums in my opinion.
Score = 0
sorry, they're fucking up their legacy quicker than you can say 'bobby deniro'
Score = 0
I agree with redboy entirely; turn, waiting for the sirens' call, and dracula's castle... I haven't had a chance to listen to krafty enough to fully appreciate it though...

It's a hard way to come home,
You've got me on my knees,
The walls are tumbling down,
they're falling like beliefs.
It's a wild world out there,
and nobody gives a damn,
in cold blood we don't care,
and we don't want to understand.

dl'ing the new album off my friend's ftp site and listening to it as i go; even though I've only gotten to Waiting For the Sirens Call, I'm liking this album already. I'm a hardcore old school NO fan, favorite album is Substance of course followed closely by Technique. Even though I thought Republic was actually pretty good, I did not like the last album and thought that like other great UK bands of the eighties (see Depeche Mode), NO was finally out of gas. Pleasantly surprised to have them prove me wrong with this album. I think the main thing is that they're sticking to their roots with this album instead of trying to reinvent themselves for the new generation. Face it, the young'uns don't give a rat's ass about NO, it's only us old folks who grew up with this music in the eighties that still buy the albums (and I will go out and buy this album, even though I'm downloading it for free)
Score = 0
It is not a bad album but surely not the best...Sorry young folks but i think that Low life is the best NO album...good points for technique as well...and for the rest it is the same old story...NO is a single band...So just wait for the singles and we will see.
Cheers

Some very strange comments here indeed. This album is very good.As with nearly all new order stuff you must listen at least 15 times before you can decide if you like it or not. I hated jet when i first heard it, but when you listen , it's actually a very good tune. The only one i am unsure about is dracula's castle. It would be one of my favourites if the chorus didn't cut the verses short and was way less flowery.Working overtime while different is still a great song and way better than rock the shack. As for the lyrics, new order has always had some good ,some crap ones,same in this album.My favourites coming from round and round and dream attack. No-one will ever do another technique not even N.O..Buy the album, we get a gatefold double vinyl over here in blighty.

Re the lyrics... It's been mentioned on and off in interviews and the like that they're not out to prove anything or bother making a direct point. If they were that would turn them into something obnoxiously preachy and would have shortened their life span considerably.
As far as the album as a whole, I'm noticing that some of these tracks are a little more mature topically; i.e., I'm sure some listeners aren't weathered enough to know what its like to be dragged off to Dracula's castle by a woman, or have 'two drinks be far too much', so there may be some cause for I-don't-identifyness there. New Order albums age like wine, imho. Ten years from now you might find it from a different, and always superior, angle.
This music is for having a good time to; drinking some sangria in the shade, or doing no thing and driving no where for no reason. (N.O. pun intended.) For me, literary criticism doesn't fall into that category, and neither does trying to find myself in someone else's music.
It's another classic just like the whole of the backcatalogue. Here's to another *25* years...
Score = 0
Once again New order comes though with a great album. "Get Ready" was good but W.F.T.S.C is true N.o. Title track has got to be by far one of my top 5 all time N.o. tracks, from Bernie's excellent lyrics and voice to Hooky's bass line and dont forget Stephen drum rhythm. Not since Teqnique has New order sounded so good. Could "Guilt is a useless emotion" be the next "Round and Round" Hooky's bass line is OFF the HOOK, no pun intended. All in all GREAT effort from New order. Cant wait for the show in Chicago. One more thing... anyone pick up the tribute New order gave to House music in "Working Overtime".

I'm fed up to the back TEETH with yet ANOTHER bloody boring WHITE album sleeve.
And the same typefaces.
For fuck's sakes.
