Stream The New Pearl Jam

Eddie wants to be Neil Young so bad. Now you can stream his band's new album in full at AOL Music. Somehow I bet this generates more discussion than "Impeach The President." But maybe we'll learn the secret behind that avocado.

Too bad I threw out my Doc Martens in 1995.

sounds pretty darn good, good solid earnest rock-n'rock. "Marker In the Sand" stands out to me thus far.

This is the best rock album to surface in years. I think this could be the greatest rock band ever. Wow, what an album. I have always sort of liked them, but my god this flat out the most relevant album I've heard in ages.

Why couldn't Kurt have shot Eddie too? Selfish Kurt.

what's with all the pearl jam hostility? maybe pitchfork will give it a good review and you guys will be allowed to like the album.

actually, that would be a reason to dislike it. liking or disliking an album because pitchfork says so is so 2003.

no no, saying you dont read pitchfork when you secretly do is sooo 2006.

the album has gotten some really good reviews so far except from the british press. they must have an ax to grind. NME gave it 4 out of 10 and compared some of the songs on the album to nickleback!!! And Q gave it 2 out of 5!!! those british fuckers!!!!

EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!

i'm biased because I'm still a huge fan but i don't think true PJ fans will have anything to complain about. this is a very strong release - hip or unhip. as far as old school rock goes, it's a hell of a lot better than Tool's new release.

I listened to the leak already and thought it was completely boring, except for a couple of songs near the end. Not sure of the titles.

hmmm.... lemme think...nope .... I still don't give a shit about this band. This music was boring, self-serving, and faux deep whiney back in 1992. 14 years has done nothing to improve it.

"as far as old school rock goes, it's a hell of a lot better than Tool's new release."

that's about the most untrue statement i've ever read on this site. the new tool disc completely owns the shit out of the new pj. i mean, i like them both, but from a musical standpoint, tool just blows pj out of the water and into the stratosphere.

tool's sound actually evolves between releases, never sounding the same on two records, whereas pj has spend 14 years trying to re-volve into what they were circa ten.

Derek has no clue what he's talking about. The original poster was wrong to compare Tool and Pearl Jam, because they are polar opposites, and Derek was wrong in not realizing that. Pearl Jam has never pretended to be anything more than a straight rock and roll band, and the absolute LAST thing they've ever done is try to copy their sound from previous albums.

I've heard both albums, and IMO, the PJ one is much, much stronger. But it depends on what you are looking for/what you are into. I like songs... and Tool doesn't give me songs.

I think i'd put myself in the top percentile of Tool fans out there and the album is boring. I'm not just making this up to cause a stir. Trust me, I keep listening to it over and over wanting to love it. I'm all for bands evolving. I think they improved with each release but this one's a step back. just one man's opinion...

I wasn't comparing Tool and PJ. they are polar opposites. I was merely commenting on the unbelievably high expectations that I had for both releases. PJ met those expectations. Tool, unfortunately, has not.

well, i do think i have a clue, but i can respect what you're saying, kev. sure, pearl jam and tool and two completely different types of bands, but i just see tool as being the better, or more important group in the grand scheme of things.

it is just my personal opinion, but tool's music and lyrics have and always will move me much more than pearl jam's. and JK, it's beyond my comprehension that someone would find this release boring, but to each is own.

"I like songs... and Tool doesn't give me songs."

Bravo, sir. When they do, they're a pretty propulsive force, but that's only about the first 4 songs on 10,000 Days, imo.

Oh, and Pearl Jam. Yeah, it's a good listen. Life Wasted is right up there with Goin' Against Your Mind for top album opener this year.

i get that people don't like pearl jam. but when they say pearl jam hasn't evolved, or keeps re-treading old material, it's obvious they actually haven't listened to them. every single pearl jam record differs from the last, and some vastly so. you can hate on them all you want, but to argue that 'no code' is a re-writing of 'ten', for example, is simply absurd.

i'm a big pearl jam fan, but i have to say on first listen i'm a little dissappointed with this new record. maybe it'll grow on me, but i don't think so. still, a great band...

The Who. Overlooked and underappreciated during their time while always maintaining a fairly large popular following. Twenty years on EVERYONE appreciates their greatness.

Led Zeppelin. Thought cheesy and pompous by critics and music snobs alike. Not to mention derivative. Now EVERYONE appreciates their greatness.

Pearl Jam... I'm just saying.

I can't wait for Pitchfork to fall over themselves hating this record. If a straight ahead rock n roll band like Pearl Jam composed the musical equivalent of the Sistine Chapel it would get a 2.3 from those pretentious twits.

I know PJ's probably not Stereogum's choice cup of tea but I appreciate you giving them a little bit of attention. I don't even listen to rock n roll outside this band anymore (I mean, rock n roll is dead right?), which is a sad statement. Makes me appreciate what these guys are doing even more.

Now back to that new Sufjan Stevens album.

True enough about the pitchfork review. I've always found it funny that the "cool" indie kids can't figure out what's cool until someone else tells them.

Rolling Stone's David Fricke gave the new album 4 out of 5 stars as well. I got the album yesterday and through 1 listen its good....more layered with guitars. I can't wait to hear "Comatose" live.

I received the album early on Friday. It is great, the strongest I have heard this year from an already amazing band.

This new record from Pearl Jam is a gem. It will, as usual and unfortunately, go largely unappreciated.

For those that think Pearl Jam have been rehashing their sound, take this into consideration...

Ten - Classic arena rock

Vs - Riff heavy grunge

Vitalogy - Experimental garage rock

No Code - Folk Rock infused with tribal sounds

Yield - Melodic mid tempo rock

Binaural - Punk infused with experimental production

Riot Act - Political concept album with a vast array of differing sounds, including grunge, classic rock, folk rock, punk rock and experimental guitars.

Pearl Jam - Contains a mixture of all of the above styles. With a clearer narritive throughout the whole album than Riot Act. If Riot Act was political, This album focuses on the war.

Pearl Jam has clearly mixed up their sound. Just because they have chosen to do this within their traditional boundary of guitars and percussion instruments it does not mean they have rehashed their sound.

To me a band that cannot find inspiration within the means of their band is truly "out of ideas". Pearl Jam have created more within this boundary than most other bands. If people had any idea of their back catalogue of songs they would realise this

Hope this makes sense.
