It's really good, maybe not their best, but up there.
Definitely not like ATYCLB in the contrived "U2 sound," this sounds more organic.

Really digging on Miracle Drug, City of Blinding Lights and All Because of You.

Why Vertigo is on this album is beyond me, it feels tacked on, like they didn't have their typical U2 first single son, so they just wrote one. Anyone else agree?

yeah, thats exactly what i was thinking...after i listened to the whole thing and then it replayed, it seemed that vertigo just didnt belong.

but i think its pretty good album overall

It's not as instantly catchy as the last one, but it's also cooler. I like that there's lots of old school Edge guitar sounds, and Bono sounds clearer and less throaty on this one. Vertigo doesn't really fit, but I'll take it.

Bono will always annoy me, I guess, but it's nice to hear some BALLS in their playing again. I know I'm gonna end up iTunes-ing this, and I'm glad it won't be a waste of $$.

I am only a few songs into it, but wow! Have these guys ever made an album that wasn't good? I even loved "Pop" when that came out. I'm liking the fact that the Edge has gone back to the reverb friendly droning guitar sound that really defined their sound. I'm buying this next tuesday.

I've been listening to it for a couple weeks. The only worthwhile songs are "Vertigo", "Miracle Drug" and "All Because of You." ABOY is almost ruined for me because there's a line where Bono sings "You had me..." and then pauses for a few seconds. So my mind inevitability fills that pause in with "...at hello."

Anyway, besides those three songs it's bad lyrics and midtempo mush.

The chorus on Vertigo reminds me of that Kim Wilde song that goes, "Set me free why don't you babe...Get out my life why don't you babe...cause you don't really love me, you just keep me hanging on". That song was WAY better than Vertigo. Holla.

Loren that's, "You Keep Me Hanging On", a Holland/Dozier/Holland tune originally done by The Supremes.

Not all the tunes are instantly catchy, but its the kind of album that, if you give it time, will pay huge divendends. To be honest, i was a bit disappointed when i first discovered how many down tempo tunes were on it. A few listens later i'm hooked. Love it.

Justin, of course. I'm not sure why I didn't remember that. I still think that song is way too famous to use that exact chord progression going into the chorus. Also, the vocals on HTDAAB sounds like Bono's been listening to too much White Blood Cells. When did U2 become so irrelevant? Oh yeah, right after The Unforgettable Fire...that's right.

It's definitely better than any U2 record since Achtung Baby (and maybe even better than that one).

As for U2 and their irrelevance, Loren's would be a hard point to argue, seeing as how they absolutely ruled the world between 1987 and 1992.

You know what does rule...AC Newman's record Slow Wonder. I suppose I'm thinking of that album, because it starts out with a track entitled Miracle Drug. The only difference is that the AC Newman song rocks.

long time lurker; first time poster.

i cant hold my tongue anymore. am i the only one who took three years of high school spanish? will someone please tell bono that catorse is spanish for 14. as in uno, dos, tres, catorce? am i missing something here?

whats worse i saw bono open the latin american music awards and the subtitles incorectly translated this so as not to make bono a boob.

I'm sorry, but only people who work for Rolling Stone magazine and/or VH1 still consider U2 worth writing about. Like REM, they are a formerly stellar band whose time has simply passed. It's sad. It happens. Anyone heard any INTERESTING music lately?

I've listened to this 5 or 6 times now and it's still not catching on for me (and I even liked "POP"!). A lot of people on U2 message boards are calling this their "3rd jewel", but I couldn't disagree more. That song "Love and Peace or Else" was the nail in the coffin for me, and this is coming from a LOOOOONG time fan.

This is a great CD, but there's no way i'd call it their 'third jewel'. While i'm really liking it now i could see getting tired of this faster than All That You Can't Leave Behind. Time will tell.

there's a theory the 14 is in reference to commercial releases by the band but you have to do some finagling to make it work -- I think it may include Passengers or Million Dollar Hotel to get to 14.

well, they've earned the right to make whatever type of music they want.
i for one am glad to see bono back fronting the band instead of solely fronting his causes (although i think he is more than admirable in his social justice work). love him or hate him, the man is a ROCK STAR.
any band as big as them will have people who like them no matter what and people who hate them no matter what.
this is not their best album by a long shot IMO, but then again, they have a killer back catalog that you have to compare all their new stuff to. they have a pretty tough legacy to live up to.
but i do like the new album because, after all, bono is singing and edge is playing so it's hard to totally fuck it up.......
and yes, bono does know he is saying 1,2,3 14.
1,2,3 and this is their 14th record.
hola holla whatever.

Uno, dos, tres, catorce is an inside joke of sorts. It refers to the fact that Steve Lillywhite produced their first, second, third and now fourteenth albums.

the catorce is in reference to this being album nr 14 for u2, and 1 2 3 and 14 were all produced by steve lillywhite

I have been listening for a couple weeks, and although I think it is ATYCLB part dos, I like it.

Some songs, like Miracle Drug and One Step Closer were iffy for me until I found out what they were about which made me like them more. The Original of the Species has a fantastic vocal hook. And that they could still pull off a song like Vertigo, regardless of whether it fits in the album, is still quite a feat. U2, like Prince, know how to write a hit and I wont penalize them for that.

Also, I dont think they are irrelevant. Given that Apple released an entire product around them, I think it makes the question of their relevance irrelevant.

Ha Cha!

Having trouble with this one so far, but persistence always pays off, right? One listen and it's flat, five more and perhaps it'll be god-like. (Unlike Pop, which lost its shiny allure quickly). Bono's gifts as a lyricist seem lacking this time out, it all sounds so hackneyed. But i'll stick with it ... Check for all the credits ... mix of producers, Flood, eno & Lanois, too.

but what about the lama intro? u2 didnt perform. it was just bono with an intro in mangled spanish and poor subtitles.

my research dept has found new information that includes the revelation that lillywhite was also producer on such albums as achung baby which was number 9. are we disregarding this info?

i dont mean to be difficult but i think bono is a boob.

i think bono was just being a goof ball with the latin VMA thing
i quite like bono when he does amusing, actually.
vertigo and all because of you strike me as the one-off , amusing, gotcha songs on the new album and the others are quite serious tunes to some extent.
u2 will still be milking this record a year and a half from now with its fifth single or whatever.
i like them so i am looking forward to it.

lay off bono's boob :)
as far as achtung baby--it was brian eno and daniel lanois actually who helmed that project, i think.
lillywhite has been involved to some extent in most of their stuff, though.
but as the proper "lead" producer or whatever, just 1,2,3 and 14.

For the people who say that these guys are lame and past their prime and have you heard anything new: What are the Arcade Fire going to be doing ten years from now? Busing tables and appearing on Bands Reunited, that's what. Or not, because no one will know who they were anyway, except for the "lucky few."

But then, I have lame music tastes. I like everything (including AC Newman and The Arcade Fire).

This album, like many said, has a much different feel from what it's expected with the release of vertigo.

I liked the way they headed in creating this album. It's different from 90's U2 and a little reminiscent of old school U2. Kind of bringing back the some of the emotions that I intertwined U2 with when I was little.

All in all... good to hear new material from U2.

this record creeps up on you slowly. inititally i wasn't impressed, but sitting on it for a couple of weeks now makes me realise how brilliant it is. it's no achtung baby - we're gong to have to accept that was a one off, people. but this new album is full of stellar songwriting and striving for big ideas and sounds to match them. 1, 2, 3, 14!

I'm unimpressed with this first listen. I compare it to when I first listened to Joshua Tree many years ago, an album that instantly struck me. Very few bands can continue to music that stirs your emotions after they have achieved ubersuccess. I am glad to hear the return of Edge's guitar and glad NOT to hear any of Bono's falsetto, but I think Bono and the boys are well past their prime. I'll probably give this another listen, but I moved on from U2 after Achtung Baby and I think I'll stay there.

i haven't purchased a u2 album since zooropa... because their work after that never really gave me the same feeling that i got from the magic that was u2 ... but to say u2 is not relevant today just doesnt sound right because their music (new or old) still has a big influence on some of the best music out today... i.e. listen to arcade fire's "funeral" album ...which is brilliant in its own right.. but i heard everything on there from "unforgettable fire" to "rattle and hum" ... so u2 = very much relevant in today's cutting edge music (no pun intended)
