Stream Xiu Xiu's Women As Lovers

There's Xiu Xiu in the air. Yesterday we posted "I Do What I Want, When I Want"'s grainy, backyard wrestling and mugging vid, but we already have bigger servings ... so much more. As the headline suggests, reader types, you can stream the band's sixth album Women As Lovers at MySpace. Just in time, too: A friend recently passed along Elfriede Jelinek's Greed, which we'll have to read alongside these 14 songs, since we don't have the Jelinek novel that gave the band the name for the rekkid (produced, like The Air Force, by Deerhoof's Greg Saunier). Great stuff all around. We love the busybody, cheek tweaking sound. And Jamie and Caralee buttressed by drummer Ches Smith/bassist Devin Hoff. After the first dozen listens, the standouts are "I Do What I Want," "Master Of The Bump," "In Lust You Can Hear The Axe Fall," "White Nerd," "Gayle Lynn," and the AWESOME cover of "Under Pressure," which includes the brilliant, inimitable baritone of Michael Gira of Angels of Light, Swans, Young God Records fame. (Speaking of Gira and lovers, We Are Him deserved more '07 love, lovers.) Anyhow, without further ado or highlight listing, get streaming; it's up from now until 1/10. Then it's bye bye Xiu Xiu.

Women As Lovers is out 1/29 on Kill Rock Stars.

somehow they've managed to make both the most accessible and the most bizarre record of their career at the same time. amazing.

You forgot to mention the best song on the album, No friend oh! The back & forth vocals and the beautiful brass are some tight azz shiz.

Band To Watch: Hospital Ships

As we pass saturation point for press coverage of Montreal, Portland, Brooklyn and et cetera, it seems Lawrence, Kansas is poised for its coming turn in the music media trend piece carousel. At least from what we're hearing; this marks...

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...

Damien Jurado - "Murderer" (Low Cover)
