SP20: Sub Pop's 20th Anniversary Benefit Festival Partial Lineup Announced

thubmnail icon: SP20: Sub Pop's 20th Anniversary Benefit Festival Partial Lineup Announced

We mentioned Sub Pop's 20th Anniversary a ways back -- well, it's officially time to party (especially if you live in the Pacific Northwest). The rumors have been circling the web, and now we have official details about SP20, a two-day benefit festival at Marymoor Park in Redmond, WA (7/12 & 7/13). There's also the SP20 Comedy Show, 7/11 at the Moore Theatre in Seattle. How'd they arrive at the anniversary date?

Though Bruce Pavitt had been using the title Subterranean Pop since sometime in '79 for fanzines, cassette compilations, radio shows, and the like, somewhere along the line he and co-founder Jonathan Poneman decided that April 1, 1988 -- the day they quit their jobs and rented a tiny office in the Terminal Sales Building in Seattle -- was the day Sub Pop Records was born. To celebrate the label's twentieth birthday, Sub Pop will release a series of re-issues starting with Mudhoney's Superfuzz Bigmuff: Deluxe Edition (May 22, 2008), launch a limited run of the Sub Pop Singles Club, and throw a series of over-the-top birthday parties for itself this summer.

Enough background info, let's see who's playing...

Beachwood Sparks
Comets on Fire
Fleet Foxes
Flight of the Conchords
The Fluid
Foals
Grand Archives
Green River
The Helio Sequence
Iron & Wine
Kinski
Low
Mudhoney
No Age
Pissed Jeans
Red Red Meat
The Ruby Suns
Seaweed
Wolf Parade

Seaweed! The Fluid! Plus, Green River and Mudhoney. Also, betting those new Wolf Parade tunes will sound great live. More bands TBA. As far as the SP2 Comedy Show on 7/11, the performers will include Eugene Mirman, Patton Oswalt, Todd Barry, and "special guests." Tickets go on sale 4/26 at 12 PM Pacific through Ticketmaster, at the Marymoor box office in Seattle, and via SubPop.com, which has more details on tickets and the charities benefitted by the show.

Green River will be great, but they need to get their first band on that label to play. Soundgarden, where are you. Enough with the solo stuff and Audioslave. Cornell, go to where you belong.

soundgarden is notably absent from this lineup. without them, there is no sub pop.

Flight of the Conchords + Wolf Parade = PURE WIN. I'd go just for those two alone!

...if only I lived remotely near to Seattle...:P

it'd be pretty cool to see tim rutilli going back to his red red meat jams. otherwise, not much i'd be excited about other than low, comets on fire, grand archives, flight of the conchords, mudhoney, kinski and no age.

well.. ok. that is enough to be pretty damn excited. sometimes i hate living in the midwest.

do you people not know the power and tragic beauty of LOW? they may not be northwest, but they are certainly one the best live acts around. get ready to take a break from your folk dancing and have your heart torn out in giddy splendor. fucking LOW!!! so excited for it all.

I am coming from Philly to be here in this beautiful city with all of those beautiful people in Seattle. It all starts with Green River... Green River is ground zero for SubPop.
