i couldn't even make it through the first song on snl. i was really trying to give it a shot, but damn it hurts!

I really wanted them to be more sinister than they appeared on snl. instead, it all seemed too local wierdo, especially the singer who looked like he worked at a magic shop or comic book store(possibly the same one that j mascis looks like he works at). in my head, I had pictured them as a prog rap metal version of constantin sankati. and they weren't. they're just not desperate enough.

Some of the songs on the new album are really good. However that single is pretty damn spastic. Lost in Hollywood is pretty damn decent. But I suppose it's an aquired taste.

"After I heard System of a Down, I thought, I’m actually alive to hear the shittiest band ever. Of all the bands that have gone before and all the bands that’ll be in the future, I was around when the worst was around."

Noel Gallagher. The man tells it like it is... sometimes. Other times he's flat out crazy, but always-- ALWAYS-- entertaining.

I'm going to be honest. I like System of a Down. Why? Because like anone over 25 and under 35 I went through a metal phase. I had Megadeth, Metallica (Kill 'Em All, the Cliff Burton Alcoholica dayz, yo) Sepultura, Pantera, you fucking name it. And I loved it. I didn't wear black concert T-shirts or have big hair, or smoked cigarettes in school, I just liked ass kicking music. I still do. I like complex percussion, rhythmically challenging music, and bit of a headbang every once in a while. System of a Down is a political, entertaining, and fucking rock. They may not be pretty-boy rockers, or "ironic" or anything else...and their new single is a tad obvious. But Toxicity is great, and the album before it not too shabby either. Hating on System of a Down is boring, and obvious, especially on a site like this.

I hate the new single, i hated their first album, and I liked a good chunk of the album prior to this. I can see why people like them, but I don't get the rabid fandom. Plus, the politics make me want to die, but that's nothing new for me...

Funny, because this weekend I decided that I like System.
Just the concept that this very weird leftist armenian prog metal band is very popular is pretty amazing.
I think it's awesome for things a bit more out of the ordinary to be popular. Why would we need another Coldplay or Jesse McCartney?
Less vanilla music!

System of a Down is certainly an acquired taste. Just yesterday a friend asked me which of May's new releases have I enjoyed the most. In addition to Spoon's GIMME FICTION, I had to say MEZMERIZE by System of a Down. And I usually don't dig music with "thrash" in the title. This band is so bi-polar, they're great. Consequently, my friend's response was something like, "Who would've thought YOU would like thrash metal?" Just my point.

that SNL performance was cringe-worthy. the first tune was the most disturbing amalgamation of Iron Maiden and Britney Spears I've ever heard. rat-faced dude on the guitar was trying really hard to be scary and lead singer guy had on really 'spensive prop jacket from Pirates of the Caribbean. and hair.

That's funny, I always wondered why more people hadn't figured out that there's nothing all that special about The Arcade Fire.

I like System. I don't care what their politics are because I don't look to bands for my politics. Their songs are well-constructed, they're tight as hell, and they do things with the metal formula that make me optimistic about the genre's future.

Considering the alternative is a bunch of white kids in ironic t-shirts who can't quite hit the notes they're trying to sing, I'll stick with the crazy Armenians howling about pogo sticks and changing tempos every three seconds whether the song needs it or not.

Uh, I'm over 25 and under 35, and I never went through a metal phase....

Anyway it's not so much about hating System of a Down, but being fascinated and confused by their inexplicable popularity. For example, if someone tells me they love grape soda, which I can't stand, I can still grasp the concept that they have different taste.

But if they tell me they love eating dog shit, that's something else entirely. It's something that can't be explained away with the aphorism, "to each his own." It's just too hard to conceive of why someone might enjoy something so distasteful.

I guess people just see the fucked up, hard parts of them. I mean, my views of the band changed from when I first heard Chop Suey and from when I heard Aerials. They're by far the most Bi-Polar band ever. When they go hard it's sometimes hard for me to listen, but some of their softer stuff is just amazing, lyrically and melody wise.

the worst part has been of the comments page is the critique on FASHION in a band. nobody has discussed anything wrong with them musically.
oh and if you compare a band to liking dog shit (i.e., crude, non-digestable, bad for you) maybe something akin to joan of arc would suffice. system of a down might be black licorice. but that's semantics.

Truly one of the most unique bands playing right now; and on a major label no less.

My guess is that people who hate them here just don't like the style of music, or the volume; because for the genres they touch on they have taken things in really creative and inspired directions.

"System of a Down has fans". Oh real clever. I expect more intelligent posts on a site like this. Maybe you should throw out another 'Ben Gibbard sneezes and God has blessed us all' post. It is possible for bands not on the O.C. and that don't play Coachella to be meaningful and intelligent. Give System credit for cracking onto mainstream radio (prior to the "indie rock" resurgence) when bands like Limp Bizkit and Creed ruled the airwaves. Or maybe they should just hook up with Jimmy Tamborello and then you can respect them.

Yeah, I have to be honest, I never expected to see hating on System on this site. Then again, sometimes I forget how afraid indie scene types are of metal. First of all, five bucks says half the negative comments think SOAD is nu-metal, which is fucking ridiculous. Secondly, I'd be willing to bet most of them don't listen to metal, either. SOAD are, without a doubt, the most revolutionary heavy band since Tool. I've liked them since I first heard "Sugar" about 7 years ago, I can never understand the hatred for them, and I never will.

I'm not a metal fan at all, but I like System of a Down pretty well. They have a fair degree of musicianship, they are pretty intentive, they have some of that good old METAL INTENSITY but they aren't afraid to work in the occasional tune and some nice harmonies. I don't own their CDs or anything but I have pretty good feelings about the band. I really don't see what would possess one to sincerely dislike the band with such intensity.

Although, I'm not surprised that this is the sort of band that hipsters would choose to dump on. As others have pointed out, they aren't working the sort of self-conscious irony angle that hipsters usually feel safe in embracing. On the other hand, they are not cheeseball-commercial enough for Hipsters to get Common Man points for pretending to like them. So they are in the middle, too sincere to enjoy ironically; weird, but too accessible to latch onto due to the sheer weirdness factor.

They came out, they played, and I damn near choked on my sandwich I laughed so hard. That was, without a doubt, the most comically bad performance I've ever seen on SNL. Dream Theater meets Anthrax meets The Darkness meets ... hell, I dunno. But wherever they all meet, they drink too much and convince themselves they're good.

As for System, I like the songs that I've heard from them. When I first heard BYOB on the radio, I was kinda like "hmmm?", but after I listened to it a couple more times I decided I really liked the chorus and how much it contrasted with the rest of the song (Not to get all analysis-y on everyone)

System is a good band, especially their cover/duet of Wu Tang's "Shame on a Nigga." Try downloading it if you can find it.

Take away the cheesy metal production and its basically cartoon music with a Gwen Stefani-esque choruses.

You would have to have a comically narrow view of music to see any value in it.

I think it's funny that some of the comments from SOAD fans allege that people don't like SOAD because:

1) They totally have politics! You're afraid of music that MEANS something!
2) They're totally intense and you don't like them because they don't have hipster irony!
3) You're judging them based on their unattractive appearance!
4) They totally BLOW YOUR MINDS and you can't handle it! They are totally more exciting and intense than other bands!
5) You're totally not understanding how the ARMENIAN GENOCIDE plays into it, dood!!!

... as if any of it had to do with the fact that they just, uh, *sound bad*. Being intense, exciting, ugly, politically inclined, sincere, etc. doesn't have anything to do with how the music *sounds*. And with SOAD, that sound is: awful. I can't stand metal though, so it may be genre-related.

P.S. as to the Arcade Fire -- if you don't get them, give them some more listens. I didn't think they were that interesting either, during the first few spins, but the CD really grew on me after repeated listens.

"scott, i expected more from you."

Why do you guys expect anything from Scott? He's a guy who has his own likes and dislikes, and happens to have a website. He's not a promoter for your favorite band. Besides, your favorite band sucks — everyone knows it.

Scott, please make this a regular feature so we can tear down everyone's favorite band.

i can't believe i want to argue with you fools about SOAD. but i will.

first, metal comes in different flavors. SOAD likes the hardcore/speedmetal elements more than most, which makes their tunes very inaccessible to the wimpy-eared. SOAD also isn't as danceable, as say KORN, further eroding their possible fan base.

Is screaming no longer a lauded attribute in a singer? Straight forward narrative isn't the only way to convey a message.

They aren't my favorite, but if you can't see the creativity, emotion, skill, and artistry of SOAD, i pity you. you're missing out.

I just wish that all of you that listen to the Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes & Death Cab just admit that you fantasize about getting fucked up the ass by your girlfriend wearing a strap on. You listen to wimp music because you can't admit that you crave cock but are not man enough to make the switch to the real thing. Bunch of fucking posers, judging a band by the way they look. All singers can't look like that connor obrist pillowbiter. In summary: wimpy indie rock fans are men who desire an anal pounding but will never admit their latent homo ways.

gatrios: yeah, but people who like good music like arcade fire as opposed to shit like system of a down can usually formulate opinions with intelligence and don't resort to bizarre personal attacks. it's all subjective. just say you think arcade fire are shit. while you argue (using sweeping generalizations of easy target bands) that people who listen to bright eyes and death cab (i don't like bright eyes and i'm not the biggest death cab fan) are closet homosexuals, in the end, your arguement is just stupid and angry, with no weight at all, except for the possible personal issues obscuring your thoughts.

Yeah, Here's a bad that's not doing anything like anyone else is doing in the Music business - At least give them for credit for that - As well as being hugely political and actually having the guts to bash Bush moreso than Conor Oberst or any other person of his likes. I like their music...Someone said it was an Acquired taste and Yeah I guess I like Hard Rocking music; It seems more powerful than a double tracked Acoustic Guitar (don't get me wrong I love stuff like that) I guess I just need Drop C Raging guitars from time to time.

I don't get it, but I can accept some people do. When I fired up my DVR on Sunday and saw they were on I was just frustrated that SNL was actually showing something a little out there, and it wasn't a flavor of "out there" which I have any appreciation for (I'm more of a DFA79 type when it comes to metal-ish stuff, but I realize they're not as big as SoaD).

Plus I remember Toxicity had a lot of buzz but I hadn't even heard they were coming out with a new album, so SNL seemed to have missed the boat by a couple years. Whatever, that's why they have fast-forward.

Stereo, start off with "Prison Song" off Toxicity. It's like the Violent Femmes on speed. The album itself is pretty solid. But of course as with every band, I can see them not being everyone's cup of tea.

Like I suggested earlier, look for their cover of Wu Tang's Shame on a Nigga." I found it on the internet. Try to get the original too, just so you can hear the improvement SOAD makes on the original.

I do like the faster SOAD songs, but "Roulette" off of "Steal This Album" is one of those songs that can bring a tear to your eye if you're in the right mindset. "Marmalade" is another oft-overlooked track, from the "Strangeland" soundtrack. There's also a 1998 Kid Rock/Eminem song on there as well. Let me know what you think.

Late one night, I turned on the TV and saw band of funny-looking characters doing what I thought was a parody of seventies rock on a talk show. Turned out to be Phish doing what Phish does, straight up. Ouch.

Same thing happened with the Spice Girls on SNL. I'd never heard of them at that point and thought they were a(n intentional) joke.

System of Down couldn't possibly have been as bad as either Phish and the Spice Girls.

All you people hating on "The Down" are out of your minds!

I truly believe that 99% people slamming them have listened to probably 1/10th of the music they put out. If that's the case, that's a bit premature judgement.

Only one person on this thread mentioned "Steal this Album", their 3rd CD which is a compilation of unreleased songs and B-sides. Until you listen to the tracks on this CD SEVERAL TIMES (one or two listens.....you will not get it), you can't judge SOAD. The last 1/2 of the cd just blends great track together with great track, and you can't even tell where one song ends and the next begins (which is weird, since it is a complilation CD). It is a mind-blowing mix of metal, middle eastern music, pop, ballad, with smidgens of jazz and funk thrown in.

It simply kick ass, and there is nothing else to say.

It you can't take heavy-ish music, then there is plenty of easy listening stuff out there for all.

I LOVE system of a down. They are so much different than every other band out there and that's what is cool to me. I love how they can take a song and start it very slow and mellow and then change it suddenly back to a fast paced metal song.... not to mention the voices of the singers are so different than other bands also. These two let go rather than hold back as to not startle the crowd with a little variety.

I came upon this site by accident, excuse my intrusion.

Alot of you people are talking about SOAD as if they were a new band. They've been around for several years. Maybe if these people were real music fans they would know about this.

From what I can tell, some of you are pop lovers, that is, people that listen to pop music exclusively. I have no respect for pop lovers, they know nothing of musicianship, or even how a song is played. Being a musician, I respect all forms of music, except maybe hip-hop, rap, and pretty much anything else that is written by a computer and run through so many voice filters that you couldn't recognize the person's actual voice from hearing their, "music."

Also keep in mind that live performances, especially at SNL, tend to sound alot worse than the album.

You also should not judge a band by the way they look. Thats one of the biggest problems in music today. People put too much emphasis on the way an artist looks and not enough on the way they sound.

Whoa, went on a rant there. Excuse the disorganized statements.

Also this is only directed toward some of you, some made much better argumants than I. I had only read about half of the page when I started writing.

system of a down are absolutley amazing because their lyrics dont just talk about love they talk about poverty and other things that are happening in the world. i noticed some people on here are discriminating, as you say 'you dont want to listen to rap or shit music,' most music's origin is underground trance. some put the music into groups e.g punk, glam, goth and pop. this is proven that the people who do that take into account what they look like and not how they sound. i bet most people who do that dont actually listen to the music themselves but depend others out on the street to tell them what they sound like. take 'goths' for instence what music would you associate to them... i reckon most of you sitting there reading this think screaming, heavy because the way they dress.
this goes to the people who are discriminating soad show that you listen to 2/10 of their music out
p.s i cant beleive you read throught this shite!!!! lol!

I would like to make a small correction. Nu-metal is essentially rap-rock, at least as I understand it from what I read on wikipedia. System of a Down is not Nu-metal. I don't like to prescribe to genre classifying, but sometimes you have to.

Some of you people need to learn to not listen to people about music and form your own opinions when you listen to the music.

P.S. to HH
I personally think that their old stuff is better than their newer stuff, of course, their newer stuff is great too, and I haven't heard mezmerize yet. But if you like the new stuff thats your perogative. Just wanted to voice my opinion on that.

SOAD is my favourite band. Like everyone says, the are an aquired taste. The basic reason behind this is because they are so weird and unique, ie. sound, dress etc. Anywho I can understand why you wouldn't like them, the whole changing in tempo, singing that is very fast thing and the weirdness facter. But they've been doing this for seven years now, and have gotten quite good at it and unlike modern political bands that have sprung up lately they've been doing this since their first album and it hasn't all been about the Armenian genocide, or atleast it isn't always directly focused on it. All I have to say is that you shouldn't just judge a book by it's cover and definatly not by a performance on SNL, I saw that episode with SOAD and I do admit it could have been better.

1) System of a Down are shit.

2) System of a Down have pointles, crappy lyrics, no recognisable harmony or melody, and no instrumental or vocal talent.

3) System of a Down is a band that relies on "rebellious" teenagers' fleeting likes; people who like them like them for about a week, then realise just how abysmal they are, and never listen to them again.

4) System of a Down are shit. I don't give a toss what Avril Lavigne thinks; she's shit too.

5) In case you haven't noticed yet, I both think System of a Down are shit, and, yes, shock horror, i like indie and Rock n' Roll. But what you SOAD fans don't realise that in 10 years no-one will remember them. They will be lost in a sea of equally shit metal (or whatever they are) bands, forgotten forever. The sign of great bands is that they live on after they die.

Just for the record, SOAD is my favourite band too. They are musically intricate and complex, and I'm happy when it's played loud because it usually drowns out the Avril from next door. As a guitarist, bassist, pianist, drummer, and vocalist, one cannot claim that my musical background is insufficient to justify this claim.

By the way, anyone heard the Avril Lavigne Chop Suey cover? I shat my pants laughing. Possibly the worst recording in the history of music.

greatest band to grace the planet earth with their ambience and presence. the politics may not be as outright as rage against the machine but songs like revenga and sugar make you wanna sign up for rugby just to release some pent up rage you've had since you were a kid.

I've noticed how so many people have been griping about how SOAD looks... so frickin' what? Since when does one's fashion choices affect their talent?
Also, why are so many people becoming so rabid about a band? Whether you like 'em or not is a matter of opinion. Everyone has one, and if yours is different than mine, I shouldn't tell you you're wrong. That would be attempting to assimilate you into my way of thinking - and that defeats the idea of individuality.
Also, so many of you seem to have only heard of them on SNL - MTV should not be telling you what to listen to. Hell, they haven't even played music videos in 10 years or more.
Besides, most everyone sounds like crap on SNL; the sound producers suck, and only popular artists appear on their channel. How often have you seen them introduce a new, never-before-heard band that wasn't a carbon-copy of another popular group?

Lesson for the Day: don't judge a band based on popular opinion or MTV play. Grab a few of their songs, listen to 'em a few times, then make your decision. If you like 'em, great. Buy their music. If you don't, big deal. Move on.

First of all, what's all this shit about the way they look? Since when does EVERY band have to get on stage with a tie and a $200 hair cut. And about the music, if you don't like hard music, fine. Just say that and move on. But to say that its garbage when every media outlet is bleeding with bubblegum bullshit, whiny self-pity, or random non-sense to the "it never gets old" 4/4 time sig shows how narrow-minded your ear is, as well as the utter insignificance of your opinion. Maybe they ought to turn it down a bit, keep it simple, and add some MIDI so that they sound like every other hip band.

SOAD, like Radiohead and the Mars Volta, is years ahead of its time and probably won't be fully appreciated for another twenty years. And while they'll still be selling out massive venues, a lot of you hipsters, will be reminiscing about bands like the Ceasars and the Killers and the Bravery in the same pathetic manner as some might yearn for the days of Erasure, Dexys Midnight Runners, and the God-awful Thompson Twins.

open your minds...

Somethingawful.com has an article where several Syndrome Of A Down fans work themselves into a froth defending their band.

Me, I'd be inclined to take them more seriously if "BYOB" weren't practically a word-for-word ripoff of "War Pigs".

Well I guess it's a crime to act like you're crazy in a band. Ozzie would never do that. Theatre - nahhh - SOAD should just lay there like Lox.

Friggin idiots wouldn't know good arranged music if it sat on your face.

Now can we please talk about real talent. So what do you think about Britney?

my friend told me that he watched a documentary on them on either vh1 or mtv and during a concert the one member said "I suck his dick!" to the other. that started many to throw shoes and other shit at them and boo the hell out of them. You all see that or hear that they are gay or anything? i enjoy their music but dont want to think they are a bunch of gay fuckers!

I own all of SOAD's albums, I would consider myself a fan, but at the same time feel like the lead singer is out of his mind. I agree with the "Sesame Street" comment, that's how I describe it to people. He goes off into a cloud and does opera in a cartoonish voice... It's very um different then other thrash bands. :-)
I have always liked thrash music, I just never liked the death/devil/etc that went along with it. DRI was awesome but the vocals/lyrics were shit.
Atleast SOAD can sing, most of them can't.
I can't believe how many of the fans dislike the thrash metal of it. I wouldn't buy their next album if they changed it.
Anyways... It took me awhile to get past the vocals, he is getting weirder and crazier in his music but they are good tunes and entertaining. Who says laughing and thrash metal don't go together? He may be weird but he goes all out with it! 8)

Ok well first off i will mention that yes i am a system fan and of course i am biased but i will explain a bit. First off that SNL showing was their first serious live showing for years you can't expect them to come out being intensely god like, if you listen to live showings later in the year you will see what i mean. Also about 1/5 of there songs are political the others i find to be philosophical despite a few which have utterly nonsensical lyrics. I myself listen to no British rock, emo , indie, or what not. My musical taste is odd so i cant talk for the majority, but from what i've heard System of a down is more talented than the majority of Metal bands. Plus they have been around for a great deal of time, their first albums are quite good too.

I fucking adore system of a down...
we all have our different tastes
personally I think the music itself is amazing. I think every member of the band is excellent.
Alot of my friends think they are getting prentenous now and that they are trying hard too hard to be different ...but i dont see it.
I've seen them at Download 05 and they were brillient performers

I aint into the fact its political (probaly down to my age (17) ) but It does give them an edge.

Same with rage against the machine but then again rage are alot better.

I love S.O.A.D :)

anyone else notice on the SNL performance the entire audio cuts out EXCEPT the guitarists vocals for like, 2 seconds ? it appears they were lip synching ? it looks like the guitarist got mad pissed and screamed "FUCK YOU" knowing they wouldnt be prepared to cut it out in time.. just my observance!

As a side note I love Systems music but this was an awful performance!

Why would Ozzy one of the most influential pioneers of metal invite a poser band to playon his tour. Oh I know he wouldn't. I think I'll start with funeral, and their ain't much chance of survival for the Neon Bible, cos it's indulgent crap mixed with overrated springsteen rip off. I salute you sir.

I came across this doing a search on why Noel Gallagher said that about SOAD. Huh...I believe the record shows that despite their massive commercial success, Oasis has been a critical failure. I agree. Tons and tons of songs that all sound the same. I hear a System of a Down song and I can fucking name it. SOAD is amazing, creative, and truly unique. I can't think of any band save for maybe Apex Theory that can be stylistically compared to them.

Oasis = overhyped Mancunian shit + a carton of cowboy-killers a day

And what's with the Arcade Fire hating? Funeral is one the best albums I've ever listened to. If you listen to it, beginning to end, and don't hear the fucking emotion in the songs, you need to be psychoanalyzed. And *don't* group them with shit like Death Cab and Bright Eyes who can't even spell introspection.

All of you who talk shit about system of a down are freakin retarded. System is one of the few mainstream bands doing something different and original. Like Andre 3000 says: "If it dont stank like they stank then they cant swallow it down." I guess they just dont sound enough like what you think things should sound like, so you dont understand it, and therefore dont like it. They are one of the best bands around right now, hands down.
