Ted Leo Covers Kelly Clarkson

Watch his awesome acoustic take on Stereogum guilty pleasure "Since U Been Gone." There's even some YYY's "Maps" mixed in. It's at ugo.com. (Thanks Dave for the heads up.)

Also on that site are performances of "Me and Mia" and "The One Who Got Us Out." Someone make MP3s!

UPDATE: Thanks Matt and Heidi...

Sound quality's pretty abysmal, despite this having been recorded in a studio. Email UGO/Ted Leo asking for a higher quality stream!

he played this exact thing at the show in sf recently. i was wondering who the original of the non-maps part was by.

alright i give up. the URL is too long for the fixed width column, and the comment form eats my HTML.

I was just reading through Ted's blog at tedleo.com today and he mentioned liking that song. So weird. Why is it that every blogger loves Ted as much as I do? He loves me too according to the copy of Shake the Sheets I got at his show in Lawrence.

when i saw ted leo at the el rey, all the young punks had no clue what song he was singing, they just blankly stared at me and all the young girls singing along.

God, I really don't like Ted Leo's music. And this just confirms it. The Kelly Clarkson song is excellent, and Ted Leo's instrumentation is decent, but his vocal, especially on the chorus, is bad. Truly bad. Ben Lee's cover of "Float On" is better than this (but not the kidzbop version).

Oh shoot. Is an Avril / Ted combo tour in the works? Seriously, Avril (who wrote this Kelly Clarkson song, right?) should get Ted to produce her next record. That would rock. Good looks all around.

Re: allie

Pitchfork's review of this song a couple of weeks ago totally spotted the maps guitar riff.

I love the Kelly Clarkson version. Ted Leo is fine, but he seems to put the whole song in quotation marks.

My Brother gave me the "Hearts of Oak" album, and I can honestly say that I really can't get into Ted Leo. I dunno, he sounds too bar band-y generic for me. Is his newer album a better starting point?

FYI: Max Martin of "I Want It That Way"/"Oops I Did It Again"/"Baby One More Time" fame cowrote SINCE U BEEN GONE for Miss Clarkson.

I don't care what anyone else says, Mr. Martin is the coolest pop songwriter of the 90s AND the 00s.
