Never thought I'd long for the days of Heaven 17 and Status Quo.
All I wanna know is...who's gonna be in "Hear'n'Aid 20"?
:::sings:::
"We're STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARS!!!"

if this song was a material it would be lame. dido makes me heave. it's just so flat.
Score = 0
Worse than I expected... less catchy than the original by a whole hell of a lot. However, the part between Justin Hawkins and Dizzee is freaking sweet.

oh my god, WHAT just happened to my ears. seeing as it is my one guilty pleasure of christmas music, i was super excited for this and super let down. i will, however, still feed the world.

Actually, I have to disagree with Beth. Sure it's not great (and that breakdown at the end REALLY stinks, and Bono sounds like he's trying to out-Bono his 1984 self) but have you heard the original lately? I think it benefits from 20 years of nostalgia from those of us that were there.
Though you're dead on about Dizzy, that is TIGHT.
Score = 0
The original was way better. This just kind of droned on and on. Why exactly did all these people get together and decide *not* to do an original song, anyways? At least then if the new one sucked it wouldn't be besmirching my fond memories of the original. I mean, I never expected to be all defensive about friggin' Band Aid, but this was way lame.

Sounds like the typical pathetic everyone-on-stage all-star finale at a second-rate teenage performing arts camp.

holy crap, that was terrible.
between saying that and downloading it, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to burn in hell now.

You'd think that 20 years later they'd realize that not everyone in the world celebrates Christmas, and that most of the people the song will supposedly benefit are not even remotely Christian. It's a bit twisted to when you realize that the monies raised are supposedly for the Sudanese. According to "Human Rights Watch":
http://www.hrw.org/english/docs/2004/05/05/darfur8536.htm
--BEGIN--
What is the ethnic and religious composition of Sudan?
Ethnically, Arabs make up 39 percent and Africans 61 percent. Religiously, Muslims make up 70 percent and the rest are Christians and traditional believers. The central government has been dominated by Arabs and Muslims since the country’s independence in 1956.
--END--
Also, it seems that people in the U.K. think it's "rubbish" as well:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=326414&in_page_id=1773
--BEGIN--
"We played it for the first time at 8am today and were amazed at the response from our listeners," said Keri Jones, station DJ and managing director.
"People were saying it is awful rubbish. They were quite passionate about it - it was quite overwhelming.
--END--
Here's a crazy idea. How about all of the artists who contributed to this effort simply take a percentage out of their royalties and donate that directly towards relief in Sudan? Because considering how much tension has been caused by the clash of Islam and Christianity, why add to the tension by wishing non-Christians a "Merry Christmas".
All this tension and bullshit comes from the clash of religions. "Do They Know It's Christmas?" Probably not. But if they are not Christian, why force our beliefs on them?
Score = 0
PS: Just to add, yes there are some Christians in the Sudan. But they are not the majority by a long shot. If people just respected others faiths regardless of whether "they know it's Christmas" or not, so many things would be calmer in this world.

MFG I had to watch a story about this shit OVER AND OVER AND OVER all damn day at work about two days ago. PPPPAAAIIINNNFFFUUULLL.

Wow. That does, as predicted, make me twitch. And I loves me my Bono, but they should've just sampled his 1984 version for The Line. And possibly run the drumbeat from "Sunday Bloody Sunday" underneath it, y'know, toss a little funky break in. And then have Dizzee rap over it again later. God, the squealy Darkness guitar brought tears of pain to my eyes...

Worst. Episode. Ever.

man, this weirds me out. i want to like it because i have a secret soft spot for robbie williams, and i adore fran healy but ew, chris martin sounds flat and not properly suited to the song, and let's face it: bono sings the same line he had 20 years ago and i'd venture that people prefer his less pretentious offering then than his crappy attempt now.
uno, dos, tres, catorce!
Score = 0
The worst part to me is that these people contribute a couple hours of their lives and then get to act like they're saints. All the while asking the peasants to donate their two quid or whatever. I'll buy the single when Chris Martin or the Darkness donate a million pounds.
Score = 0
Forget about taxes, Iraq, Afghanistan, Social Security, Welfare, Healthcare, stem cell research, gay marriage, etc...What we need is a referendum to ban that goddamned U2/IPOD commercial. "Uno, dos, tres, quatorze!" Yeah, Bono. Keep us guessing with your counting. One, two, three...fourteen! Holy shit! You never know where he's going next! Fuck. And why is this band even relevant anymore? If I wanted to listen to teenange angst drivel, I'd listen to Greenday or Korn. Which I wouldn't anyways, since I'd never allow myself to be paid to own that putrescence. U2 is kinda like the Clive Cussler/Stephen King/Tom Clancy of the writing world. All three are prolific with careers spanning several decades, are guaranteed best sellers, and SUCK THE SWEAT OFF A DEAD MAN'S BALLS. That said, why do I have to see that goddamned U2/IPOD commercial 8 times a day? Seriously, I just got home and turned on the television and within 1 hour I saw that fucking thing 3 fucking times -- on one channel. Fuck U2. Fuck Bono. Fuck Apple and fuck their IPOD.
Score = 1
and fuck yale bloor.

the bono hate is so amusing.
why not hate on someone a little more deserving, brother.

Justin -- while he does seem to be turning into an annoying twat at a remarkable pace, Chris Martin does, in fact, give a surprisingly tremendous amount of money to charity every year -- at one point it was said that Coldplay tithed 10% of its income to charities. I believe this was just before RUSH OF BLOOD... came out, and I never saw it confirmed, but. You might want to check on it.
I'm pretty sure the members of the Darkness are secretly some of the worst people on the planet, though. I mean, come on, Justin Hawkins. Picking a fight with a 44-year-old legend over a terrible line on a charity single? Pure class.

That could have been a joke... or made up by the British tabloid press.

I think Jack is missing the point. The point of the song is to remind Christians that the whole point of Christmas is not the excess and partying that it has become, but rather the notion of doing something for our fellow humans in need - as Christians believe Jesus did. I don't think they're asking "Do they know its Christmas?" because they're worried about the Sudanese missing out on Santa Claus - but rather, it's that we're eating, drinking and being merry, while there is no such celebration in other parts of the world.
OK - all seriousness aside. I thought it would be better. I am a big fan of the original.
Score = 0
I totally agree with Laura, you can drone on and on about Christian's forcing their beliefs on other religions...no one doubts that they do. But that's not what the song is about...listen to the lyrics. It's about giving a shit about more then what you can see in front of you.
And honestly? It's not that bad of a song...you simps shouldn't just take fucking Scott"from SPIN fucking Magizine"'s word for EVERYTHING. It's a shitty quality MP3 that he stold from some other stupid bloger. You act like it's the worst thing you've ever heard, when it's a really good song. Yeah the orignal is better, but jesus...My favorite artists didn't sing the original. George "Fucking Jitterbugin" Michael did.
(Can you count all the spelling errors?)

And when I say "It's about giving a shit about more then what you can see in front of you." I'm talking about doing something other then siting in front of the TV for more then 3 hours. That's right you whiney bastard yale bloor, I'm talking about you.
"why do I have to see that goddamned U2/IPOD commercial 8 times a day? Seriously, I just got home and turned on the television and within 1 hour I saw that fucking thing 3 fucking times -- on one channel." (Note: if you saw this 8 times, at 3 shitty U2 commericals an hour: you've watched a little less then 3 hours...OF THE SAME CHANNEL.)
The answer is simple: You fucking don't. Don't watch the same channel for 3 hours. I know it was MTV or fucking VH1 because that's where they are playing that commerical. What...did you really need to watch Laguna Beach 6 times back to back? or was TRL on? Quit bitching about stupid commericals, because all commericals are stupid. Turn off your TV and go read a book. Or here's an idea...listen to the song and FEED THE WURL.
oh wait...what are they saying? sounds like feed the wurl, but um...what's a wurl???

Fuck yale bloor.
Green Day? Korn? Talk about irrelevant.

Dido and Mr Patrow are so out of tune it's a joke. Anyway whay happened to Kool & The Gang? The song is overproduced and shite. The Darkness bits are a joke, Dizzee Rascal's rapping makes me laugh. Then they make it all Laylaesque with the complete change of tempo, Most odd. They should have totally changed the whole song, not just produced the same thing again.

Oy! At least give money to Oxfam directly if you downloaded the MP3! Or buy some music through www.bignoisemusic.com, so you can choose a better track and still give for the good cause!

Why pay good money for a song that sucks? Why not just take that money and donate it directly to the charities that need it!
I suggest all freelancers overbill one hour in honor of charity. And then take that money and donate it. The hour shoud be called "Their Time(tm)".
Seriously, screw paying to sate the egos of egotistical stars.

So, why is everyone so shocked? We're not going to even talk about the albums by most of the artists that contributed to BandAid 20 in 5 years let alone another 20! One of the BBC articles compares the original artists to today's version and it makes sense. It's just a representation of this period in music.

Love the original, but this is real crap :-(

So instead of Paul Young and then Boy George starting off the song, we have Chris Maahh-tin and wee little Dido. And I was thisclose to singing "Imagine there's no heaven..." when I heard that piano. Was the channeling of John Lennon intentional?

Just scanned the dialogue, and i'm not sure anyone's pointed out that in cluster events like this, quality & class are quite beside the point ... if it raises some cash quick, then the job's done.
Score = 0
a.c. nanaimo, you know how else the money could have been raised? Each artist could just fire one superfluous assistant and toss their token salary--easilly in the 5 figures--and send it off.
I'm sick of artists who have tons of cash asking average people to shell out their money to "donate to a good cause". Bono is not hurting for cash anymore and can easilly shave off some points from his contract to "feed the world".

Did I just see a comment on Avril? WTF?
I wish people would stop using the holidays as an excuse for charity- can't we be merry and generous the rest of the year? Seriously, if they used more of the oldies I would love it, but that's probably because I like very few of the new artists on this album. Yays Justin!

Quit slagging this useless vid off and recognize the purpose of this celebrity dross. It's threefold.
1. Raise awareness
2. Political, to generate a groundswell of support amongst the common people about forgiving developing world debt and helping to alleviate poverty.
3. Conspicuous compassion, to make the celebs look good and raise their profile because they look like they give a shit.
You can't tell me that Justin Dickhead from the Darkness or stupid git Robbie Williams lose any sleep over starvation in the third world. At least Sr Big Gob and Bono have actually stuck by this cause for 20 years. Respect.
Another way to work this can be seen at Sarah McLaughlan's website, where she has a downloadable clip of what the normal cost of average MTV vid could do in the developing world. This said more to me than the celebrity dross of this latest publicity ploy. It can be found at www.sarahmclaughlan.com, and it's worth a look.
Maybe one day the governments of our wealthy countries will give a shit about these REAL problems more than the assets of some despot that they envy and will go to a pointless war over. Hear this, Howard, Blair and Bush you greedy bloodlusting gits.
Score = 0
Stop talking shit about the song, if you don't like it then don't hear it... It is for a very good cause and if you really want to help you don't do because big artists tell you or depending on what they do with their lives, they are just the ones who are giving you an opportunity to help the ones in need. Why should you care if the STARS are donating anything or just making propaganda for themselves, that is their problem, and we can never know for sure if the ARE actually donating money from their big bank acounts, THEY MAY BE. At least they are doing something, you do not see Bush or any of those raising anything for the needy (and it's because of them that the world is shit). Last, if the point would have been to do the same thing as 20 years ago, they wouldn't have gone through the trouble of doing it again. The point is making a new and DIFFERENT version for the new generation and for those who think that the music and the tone and the voices and everythig else stinks, then go and record a song yourself to see if you can do it better and help those who need it.
