The Cure, R.E.M. Line Up For Sasquatch! 2008

Sure, yes, and fine, having R.E.M., the Cure, the Flaming Lips' U.F.O. show, M.I.A., Modest Mouse, the National, the Breeders, Built To Spill, et al puts this year's installment of the earthy Pacific Northwest festival Sasquatch! amongst the lineups to beat this summer, but in case you didn't notice from that list of headliners there is no Jack Johnson. This makes it our favorite lineup so far because: 1) clearly they're taking the high road by resisting the lure of whatever dollars they could tie up via Jack's great, unwashed, dirty white hatted surfer masses; 2) this preserves the hack-free integrity of the camping grounds; and 3) honestly we were running out of Jack Johnson jokes. (Just kidding, we're just saving up those good vibes for APW and Coachella and Bonnaroo.) Anyway, this is a Memorial Day weekend lineup worth camping for:

R.E.M.
The Cure
The Flaming Lips

I've been long awaiting this announcement, and I'm excited about a lot of this lineup... I've probably seen BtS more than I can count, but I really want to see R.E.M., Mates of State, Beirut, Battles, and The National. The Jicks and The New Pornographers should be fantastic, of course. Definitely not missing it this year.

The Pitchfork announcement stated that the Flaming Lips would debut "Christmas on Mars" at Sasquatch!. I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere else. Is it bullshit, or do they know something we don't?

Honestly, this lineup is pedestrian for anyone in the Seattle area, as well as for those who do not enjoy seeing "rock bands" far past their prime and relevance.
Save Destroyer, Battles, Flight of the Conchords, the National, Jamie Lidell, and Thao Nguyen, I will take the 2007 lineup, any day. With the exception of Fleet Foxes, I pass on seeing over half of these Seattle bands who play in my neighborhood on a regular basis. Arcade Fire? Bjork? Patrick Wolf? Grizzly Bear? Where are the comparisons?

Curious: How do you objectively measure relevance?

what a majorly fantastic lineup. no jack johnson, and i've noticed the bands are the ones that are exceptional L-I-V-E. ex. beirut, the hives, flaming lips, new pornographers, mia......worth the price too.

this lineup clearly kicks the ass of that of all other upcoming festivals.

This IS the line-up to beat this summer! And no hippies/college lamers, Bore-jork or Bore-cade Fire!

Sorry...I just took the puns too far...

wow i can't believe the feedback, seriously there have been very little complaints. (no JJ perhaps? lol) i would only need sigur ros and then it would be perfect. this is going to be my first year at sasq and i'm so glad it seems like the summer's best fest!

KT, you're in for a treat. This will be my forth year at Sasquatch and I am very very excited for it. The lineup this year has blown me away. So many of my favourite bands I've been following for a few years, tossed in with some musical gems I've just recently discovered. Add to this amazing lineup one of the best outdoor venues in the world and it becomes a festival you just can't beat. Get some friends together, pack your bags, close your eyes, and enjoy the ride.

Too bad the festival is in the middle of nowhere and though the Gorge is a beautiful outdoor venue, it's hard pressed to find folks that want to drive the 3 hours from Seattle and Spokane, camp in terrible conditions, and endure what is always lousy sound.

How I wish Bumbershoot would grab a line-up like that.

the line up is solid, is there any word as to whether or not the good sasquatch people will be getting more than 10 showers for its 25000 plus showers? that was just stupid last year!
