The Cure's Emo EP Released, Robert Smith Gets Emo About It

thubmnail icon: The Cure's Emo EP Released, Robert Smith Gets Emo About It

As promised, the Cure's emo-friendly Hypnagogic States EP -- complete with remixes of those LP13 pre-release singles by 30 Seconds To Mars, AFI, 65 Days Of Static, and Fall Out Boy -- is out. The royalties will benefit The International Red Cross. Robert doesn't want you to buy it just yet, though, because it's priced too high on iTunes. In true emo spirit, he wrote his label a dramatic letter worthy of Young Werther doing his best Ian MacKaye:

PLEASE DONT BUY HYPNAGOGIC STATES EP FROM ITUNES FOR £7.99

IT IS ABSURD!

TMU HAS MANAGED TO FUCK THIS UP TO ANOTHER LEVEL!

MY EMAIL TO THEM TODAY IS BELOW
ITS EASIER THAN WRITING IT OUT AGAIN NICELY...
(THOSE OFFENDED BY COLOURFUL LANGUAGE LOOK AWAY NOW)

>

DEAR...

I FUCKING DESPAIR
AGAIN

HYPNAGOGIC STATES EP IS NOW UP ON UK ITUNES...

5 TRACKS FOR £7.99?
FOR FUCKS SAKE!

AND THE PACKAGE IS COMPLETEY MISSING THE EXTRA BONUS TRACK (65DOS ALT REMIX OF "THE ONLY ONE")

SO
YOU CAN BUY THE FOUR REMIXES BY 30STM/AFI/MCR/FOB INDIVIDUALLY FOR 79P EACH...

BUT YOU ONLY GET THE 65DOS "EXPLODING HEAD SYNDROME" REMIX OF ALL FOUR SINGLES IF YOU PAY £7.99 FOR "THE ALBUM"...

IE YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO PAY £4.83 FOR THE 65DOS REMIX... !!!
WHO THE FUCK IS GOING TO PAY THIS AND NOT FEEL TOTALLY RIPPED OFF?

IT'S NOT A FUCKING ALBUM!
IT'S A 5 TRACK EP
AND YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO GET AN EXTRA FREE TRACK (THE 65DOS REMIX OF "THE ONLY ONE") IF YOU BUY IT AS A 5 TRACK EP
AND ITS SUPPOSED TO COST LESS IF YOU BUY IT AS A 5 TRACK EP THAN IF YOU BUY THE 5 TRACKS INDIVIDUALLY...

THAT IS WHAT WAS AGREED

THIS IS SO TOTALLY WRONG
I REALLY DO FUCKING DESPAIR

WHY IS IT SO INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO GET ANYTHING DONE RIGHT?

PLEASE FIX THIS NOW

>

I AM POSTING THIS AS I FEEL

UPSET!

ANYWAY
PLEASE ONLY BUY THIS 5 TRACK EP FROM ITUNES WHEN IT IS AVAILABLE FOR AROUND £4.00 OR LESS AND YOU GET THE FREE 65DOS T.O.O REMIX - IT'S FAB AND THE MONEY (WELL - OUR SHARE OF IT!) IS GOING TO A GOOD CAUSE...

THIS GOES FOR ANY OTHER ITUNES STORES AROUND THE WORLD

LIKE JAPAN...

ONWARDS...
RSX

You can read the sundry responses to the letter at thecure.com. Also of note: The Cure's 13th album, 4:13 Dream, is now out 10/28 via I AM/Geffen. That's right, it was supposed to be out 9/13 and then 10/13, but something went wrong, so Robert & Co. lose out on the 13 theme, as he duly noted in the comments last week (scroll to "Lucky 13? by CURE:Robert):

IN A YEARS TIME I DOUBT ANYONE WILL REMEMBER THE RELEASE DATE...

AND THE SAD REALITY IS THAT FAR FROM EMBRACING MY 13TH CONCEPT
(DESPITE MY BEST EFFORTS)
THE MIGHTY U HAVE CHOSEN TO TOTALLY IGNORE IT
AS THEY SCHEDULE THEIR RELEASES AROUND A USA TUESDAY... AND BUSINESS IS BUSINESS...

IN FACT ''THE ONLY ONE' WAS INDEED THE ONLY ONE OF THE FIVE RELEASES SO FAR TO GET OUT ON A 13TH - AND THEN... PLAN 13 FELL APART AS FAR BACK AS JUNE!

AND THE NEXT 13TH THAT FALLS ON A TUESDAY?

JANUARY 2009...

SO
OCTOBER 28TH IT WILL BE!

RSX

I fucking despair, too, Robert.

I was going to put some Cure lyrics into this comment.

But all I could think of was NIN's chorus from "Only." I'm trying to figure out the difference.

Ah:

"There is no you there is only me
There is no fucking you, there is only me"

"I don't need your us or them
Get your fucking world out of my head"

Silly me. You understand the mistake, right?

Carry on.

The 65 days of static megamix is ok, but I would have been happier to hear it seperated in to the four seperate tracks and replaced the awful Euro Rave crap that AFI and My Chemical Romance are responsible for. And as for the Fallout boy shite, jeez. I hope this sells and gets you the extra fans you want Bob, because it does nothing for my opinion of your tastes in music (other than 65days)

I'm not going to jump on the "OMG ROBERT SMITH HAS TERRIBLE TASTE IN MUSIC" bandwagon, considering that this man has written my life- but:

I just think this is a funny reasoning, to say "oh yeah, we've all been through that phase!" when Robert Smith is 50.

to beat a dead joke horse, I was waiting for a nice "SQUIDBRAINS" to be thrown into that post.

Y'know, considering this is supposed to benefit a charity, wouldn't it make sense to have it a bit higher-priced so that said charity gets more money? And wow, Robert Smith LOVES that all-caps key doesn't he?

WTF is going on here? Might as well have let Lol Tolhurst remix these. Horrible, but then again the originals were cack as well in my opinion.

65daysofstatic - the fall of math is a better album than any released by a band covered on this site.

Mehdi, don't be a dweeb. Lol's actually a pretty good musician. You should check out his Levinhurst stuff.
