The Offspring Play CBGBs

And yes, Stereogum was there. Did your jaw just drop? I was trying to help "Save CBGB" and I figured I might as well hear music that I'd recognize. Their last song, which was surprisingly early (11:30) was "Self-Esteem." The audience sang the first verse. Notable quotes from Dexter throughout the night:

  • "So many bands have played here ... like Lisa Loeb and the Gin Blossoms."
  • "Why is Michael Jackson so found of twenty-one-year olds? ... 'Cause there are 20 of 'em!"
  • "You guys may be the best audience we've ever had!"
  • I bet he says that last line at every show. Biggest disappointment: Offspring didn't play their one song I like -- "I Choose." If you've got MP3, e-mail to me, and I'll post. I tried to hum it to Jeff all night, but he had no idea what I was talking (er, humming) about.

I got only a couple of shots. My batteries died ten minutes in.

Central Village has a kickass gallery, and Heart On A Stick has an extensive review.

In other news, it's a boy for Brit and K-Fed.

I remember "I choose". It had a weird airport themed video. Ah, my youth...

"I Choose" is probably the best song they've done.
I still have a nerdy 13-year-old fangirl crush on Noodles.
    I feel really old.

Offspring has to be the worst American band in the past 15 years.

Ah yes.. Can't completely hate the band because of the nostalgia I feel when I hear "Smash it Up." In elementary school my buddies and I would rock out to that song like our lives depended on it. Ah, youth.

I've got to say though, Noodles is looking a tad grampa'ish (if only because his white-blonde hair is looking somewhat gray in that pic).

Dude, there are bands worse than Offspring that many people here listen to. And I think Offspring kind of sucks, too. Apparently Dexter is quite the hand with the bon mots, though.

Not to start another "Are the Gin Blossoms embarassing or not?" tangent, but I would rather listen to the Gin Blossoms (or Lisa Loab, for that matter) than the Offspring any day of the week.

    That is all.

i've seen the Offspring as a headliner once in 1994 ... and once at one of those festivals ... they have two songs and they play them over and over ...

The joke is much funnier when you say 28 y/o's. And, much funnier when delivered by the bum on the 1 train. He has a whole funbag of MJ and R. Kelly jokes (and songs).

"Why did MJ got to Macy's?" "Becasue he saw a sign outside that said 'boy's pant's half off!."

That, freinds, is just a sample of his comedic and not to mention his musical stylings. Phucking virtuoso.

The show at CBGB's kicked ass. Dex was cool hanging around the crowd talking to people, having a beer at the bar. All you people that say Offspring was ten years ago... you haven't seen them live any time recently. Offspring kicked ass!!!
