The Return Of The Verve

Never too far gone from our remembrance (just yesterday they turned up in a Winehouse post), Britpop heroes the Verve have called a truce and are launching a new website, spending time in the studio, and planning to reform without Tong (too busy being Good, Bad and/or The Queen), but with McCabe, Jones, Salisbury, and Ashcroft's preternaturally bony face. Here's their message to you...

The Verve ... were back recording together in a London studio last week.

After a summer break, they will return to the studio to complete their next album. The Verve will also return to the live arena in November, playing ... 6 shows in the UK.

Why reunite? 'Tis the season, apparently. And as the Urban legend goes, the Verve never saw a penny from "Bittersweet Symphony" (100% of the royalties go to Mick & Co.), so maybe a little padding for the pockets, then. Last Richard was in NYC (at Webster last year), friends mentioned his banter included some good time god complex confessionals ("I think about Jesus, and I really believe the only two people alive who know what it must have been like for him are Noel Gallagher and myself.") That was said with a straight and narrow face, folks. But Hymns we love, so this is cool news. So be their friend (only 180 so far!) and take the jump for the UK dates.

Poor use of "preternaturally." Awkward and forced.

2002 interview...

Speaking of socially cosmic, you're playing with Richard Ashcroft again...

Liam: "He comes round mine house, took me driving in his new car. I shit me
pants 'cos he'd just passed his test.
In this 50 fookin' grand white Elvis motor. He goes, 'We'll take the
roof down' and I'm thinkin', 'We're gonna look a right pair of proper
c---s driving round London with a roof down in this...naah, put the
roof back up!' I love him, man."

I thought the Bittersweet Symphony money went to Andrew Loog Oldham?

Best News Ever. Never thought it would happen.

Let's just hope that McCabe gets a lot of input in these recordings, as much as I love Richard, his solo stuff was borderline cheesy (borderline ONLY due to previous amazing Verve music).

Now they need to come and play in Montreal or really anywhere in NA so I can see them.

i've always thought richard ashcroft was a bit of a tit, but urban hymns had some nice songs on it

£10 says every track on the new album includes ashcroft's trademark "woah lorrrrhaahooorrd"

i was at that webster hall show...i taped it even and listen to it pretty often. it's possible that both my trusty recorder and myself missed this god comment, but i heard nothing of the sort.

still...i love shit like that. i'm gonna go listen closer.

Why reunite? Maybe something to do with a failed solo career? Still, with McCabe on board this could be beautiful.

If Simon Tong's not in the band, it's not the fucking Verve.

Not the fucking Verve? Are you serious? Simon Tong wasn't an original member of the band, nor was he a member when they were at their best -- Urban Hymns is the only album he's on, and it's their worst album (though still good, of course). And even then, it's not like he was a major contributor.
