The Shins' Marty Crandall Lists His Top 5s
Less exciting that crawling inside Thom's iPod, sure, but we're always curious to know what's rocking our favorite artists' headphones. And since today is Office day, why not go with Jim Halpert's favorite band? The Shins keyboard man Marty Crandall gave Borders a series of Top 5s for everything from all-time indie rock albums to '80s singles. (Thanks Carol!)

It was plain to see that Beck as a favorite of him. On song "Sea Legs" from Winching, we can see that Beck influence.

Marty, there is no guilt in listening to JT. Or so I have convinced myself.

those top 5 indie albums are pretty much mine too! i can't possibly imagine life without "in the aeroplane...". or "slanted.." for that matter. what's mangum up to these days anywho?
speaking of shins, their new record is amazing. my heart almost melted when i put it on the ol' turntable. i remember speaking with joe (produced and mixed "wincing...")last summer about this record. he said.... "look out for this one...it's going to be good." who'd of known?! aside working for u2 and beck and such...he also mixed up one of our band's records too! bedroom walls to be exact. and if you haven't heard "all good dreamers pass thi way" yet, well, now is the time. i nearly melted with that album too. did you know their "magnified" in this month's (jan/feb) issue of magnet mag? go get it!

That dinner party actually sounds pretty interesting. I also like the list of top 5 80s songs, even though I would probably put the safety dance instead of I can't go for that.
Also, the new shins is definitely good.

Talk about generic. Much like the Shins..
Score = -1
I like seeing the Lilys on that list. Although it's not one of my very favorites, it's worthy of more year-end recognition than it received.
And if you were going to bring somebody back from the dead, would it be Chris Farley? I mean, he was funny and all. I'd go Phil Hartman, all the way.

The Office is in re-runs tonight, boss.

That dinner party would end in shambles! 3 of the 5 are named Chris, so the majority of the talking would just be
Marty: "Hey, Chris..."
Chris Farley, Walken, and Guest all turn heads towards Marty.
Marty: "DAMNIT!"
Score = 0
Solid top 5 indie albums from Marty. My choices wouldn't be that much different.

Ricky Gervais, Wife Swap, and Hall & Oats. . .Will you please ask him to marry me???

Laura: no.

I love how aging hipsters like John, that likely have spent much of their day deciding whether they "really are into Menomena, or just think they're a passing phase" can deride a rather successful pop musician's music choices as generic. Hmmmm, it seems to me The Shins sell albums and sell out shows because they've figured out that the generic tastes of America consistently trend towards a new yet recognizable sound/taste/flavor/look. You can call it generic if you want, most people call it successful. Music (and life in general) doesn't always need to be independent of the mainstream to be enjoyable. But then again, when you've sworn to put down anything that anyone outside your sworn circle of blogs approves as good music, you've got a point I guess.
