The Smashing Pumpkins Usher In The Zeitgeist In Paris

For those craving a taste of reconstituted Pumpkins, reader Seth points us to the Grand Rex SP Blog, a site set up for one purpose only: to live photoblog the Smashing Pumpkins' first reunion show, tonight at the Grand Rex in gay Paris. Here's a sample snap of our proud countrymen in action...

Of course, it's a not-liveblog for us in the States, as this show is over by now. According to an anonymous commenter on Grand Rex SP Blog, "The curtain lifted and the lights blew open and the riff of ZERO came on... the crowd went nuts.... it was pitch black and then a burst of light." So that's as good as fact! Actually, we wouldn't recommend trolling those comment boards, they rapidly degenerate into absurd setlists (e.g. "'My Heart Will Go On' [duet with Celine Dion]") and recipes for Spicy Pumpkin Pound Cake (though it does sound delicious).

That said, there's a version of the setlist all the absurdists are using as a base, so we're giving that a 60% chance of legitimacy and have posted it after the jump (along with an awesome GRSB shot of the Zeitgeist-themed artwork on the Grand Rex).

Mario's above setlist is confirmed on the SP myspace as well as the new lineup...

ZEITGEIST—which features the just-released single "Tarantula," now buzzing loudly at Rock and Alternative radio as well as all over the internet----represents a powerful rebirth and reaffirmation of the Smashing Pumpkins by two of its key members, main singer-songwriter and guitarist Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. At the Grand Rex, they welcomed Jeff Schroeder (guitar) and Ginger Reyes (bass) to the line-up, which is supported by keyboardist Lisa Harriton.

so who is in the band? it looks like he is keeping with his female bass player theme.

I must admit, the chubby, depressed high schooler still somewhere in my subconscious is pretty stoked from reading that setlist. And I really don't hate that first single like...even a little bit. It's not spectacular, but it's certainly not terrible either. Maybe this comeback could actually be more than Billy Corgan in need of some fast cash and an ego stroke?

Wow, 29 songs is a lot. Love a lot on that list, though. Understandably.

The setlist doesn't list the final encore of:
30. Honestly
31. Bawitdaba (duet with Kid Rock)
32. Freebird
33. Copacabana (duet with Barry Manilow)

So I guess this finally confirms that both Iha and Darcy are no longer needed to form an official Pumpkin Smasher.

I think James Iha and Darcy should get together and record a completely different Smashing Pumpkins album, without Billy and Jim.

^Yeah, and have Auf Der Maur in the band too.

Wow, 29 songs?! That seems to be the recurring here. How long was the set, 2 and-a-half-hours or something?

Just Corgan & Chamberlain constitutes a Punkins reunion? Dang.... It hasn't even been a decade since they "broke up" and they've already matched the Who reunion lameness.

Jimm: I wish, it's actually the Pumpkins song Winterlong.

It was mighty decent of Green Day to lend them their set design, though.

Anyone who saw old Pumpkins gigs knows that Darcy was barely a competent bass player. And as we all know, neither her or James ever recorded a note on the records. Their job was to look cool while Billy and Jimmy made music. Sorry to say.

Jimmy wasn't even in the band for the second half of their career. And there were entire songs written by James and Darcy.

James wrote songs, but other than "Take Me Down", I can't think of any that made the actual albums. Certainly not Pumpkins must-haves.

siamese dream was entirely written by billy corgan,he recorded bass, guitars and wrote the lyrics off course... while james and darcy were cracking and fucking in some chicago hotel... dont get me wrong, i loved darcy and james, but corgan has always been the core.

Iha wrote the riffs (chord progressions if you will) for both Mayonaise and Soma. They were both Corgan/Iha co-writes with Billy most likely contributing the song structures and bridges. Notice both songs are absent from the setlist.

This reunion is a joke and Corgan's a twat.

Iha contributed 'take me down' and 'farewell and goodnight'to mellon collie, two calm but precious
songs. And if you guys think things thru, there're is more about a band than the one who scrapes stuff down and drags it thru the mixer. pumpkins will never be as good as they were in the original line-up. And billy is a righteous kid. I'll see him on the 6th and scream his name!

OK, Guys/Gals...

I was there, and the show was AWESOME...

I had seen them, all three band configurations, 5 times prior to this show, and I followed and saw them in Luxemburg and Belgium too.

These were by far the best concerts that I have been to in years.

I have memories for a lifetime. And pics and tix to prove it. Moove on to other groups and sites, all you HATERS. The Pumpkins are back, in whatever incarnation it is, it is MORE THAN ACCEPTABLE TO ME, and the other three thouand plus fans there.
