The World Reacts To North Korea's Nuke Tests
North Korea has claimed its first successful nuclear arms test, and the civilized world has spoken out in condemnation.
The primary players have spoken. Your move, Jong-Il.China dubbed the tests "brazen" and expressed its "resolute opposition" because N. Korea "defied the universal oppposition of international society." (New York Times) Australia said it would call on the U.N. Security Council to levy financial, trade, and travel restrictions. (NYT) The United States has called the test a "provocative act, in defiance of the will of the international community." (Times Online) Devendra Banhart declared, "very unsettling / news / about / nuclear bomb / being detonated / in north korea. / women remember everything / and mother earth is no exception." (Jane)

Nuclear weapons proliferation is the logical consequence of continued irrational optimism regarding nuclear power's magical ability to solve all of humanity's energy needs. The proliferation threat alone should be sufficient to deter us from further developing nuclear power. The insanity of nuclear power is then compounded by the unresolved problem of nuclear waste. Nuclear power has never been economically competitive with traditional power generation on a cents/kWh basis despite astronomical government research subsidies that continue today. Yet this summer we make a deal with India to share nuclear technology (does nobody remember that India first obtained nuclear weapons by diverting fuel and technology from a Canadian research reactor that was ostensibly for civilian use?). Today N. Korea, tommorow Iran (more disingenuous civilian use nonesense, Iran flares natural gas at its petro well heads, if they needed electricity they would have natural gas generators). We're going down the road towards tiny cities made of ashes.
