As Mr. Stereogum may be aware, I was none too pleased with the crowd at the Franz Ferdinand show last night. (1) It is NOT OK to sing along to the songs in my ear so loudly that the only music I hear comes from your shrieky and embarrasingly off-key vocals. (2) It is NOT cool to throw up the sign of the beast during "Take Me Out." We are not watching Slayer. (3) It is not OK to dance in my space. First of all, I am not crazy about dancing at concerts at all (despite Franz Ferdinand's comments that they are a dance band). If you must dance during the concert, however, please do it within the confines of the 1 x 1 foot square space you have been allotted. (4) Don't sweat on me. If you know that you have problems with excessive perspiration, please be courteous enough not to wear a tank top to an overpacked concert on a 90 degree evening -- because when you are busy screeching along to a song, dancing around like a rabid dog and happen brush up against me, I do not appreciate having a river of your sweat coat my arm. A t-shirt, at the very least, could have wicked up some of that excess moisture. (5) Oh, and did I mention that it is wholly unnecessary to wear stilleto heels to a rock concert?

Oh please, dancing is good for you. Some bands you just have to shake your ass to. And remember, music is a contact sport. Deal with it.
Score = 0
i think a little dancing at a rock show is fine, but these people were full-on dancing like they were at a bar mitzvah circa 1984. at least it provided some entertainment, since we couldn't see the stage. see, cara--we should have worn stilettos too. a little extra height to see the fucking band. i can't complain about the music, but i really hated the venue, the people, the heat, the overpriced merch, the location...
Score = 0
Cara- your post is as insightful as it is funny. I agree with all your opinions on how those annoyances can just ruin an otherwise cool rock show. By the way, you have my condolenses for being raised by anal retentive (albeit good moral) parents :)
Score = 0
When they played in Boston on wednesday the crowd seemed to be a combination of hookers, immigrants and kids that are taking part in a anti-foot-wear march to protest Phish's break up.
I think it's just htat there are few scot-rockers to support a scot-rock band, so no one is really sure what scene their on. Franz Ferdinand has combined dead-heads and ravers into one unstoppable force of ecstasy and birkenstocks.

god damn was it hot in there...after awhile you just stopped caring. Alas I could not see a thing..I to was wearing comfortable shoes (converse). The venue sucked I totally agree. I felt bad cause a friend gave me their set list and I did not jump up and down like a school girl. I told him if it was Richard Ashcroft I would have. God this show made me feel old. I hope no one looked in my direction and said to their friend "who brought their grandma"

I thought the show was a blast. I can't say this for every show I go to, but there are only a handful of bands where jumping up and down and sweating your ass off feels just like the right thing to do. These guys are the first band in a long time that really got me going like that...and I am normally a very stationary fan. After a while, the heat and the sweat becomes part of the whole thing. I know it was uncomfortable, but, shit, it was 90 degrees outside...when sons and daughters were on the space was noticeably air conditioned, but add another 1000 people to the mix, and, yea, it gets really hot. I hardly blame the venue on that. I was expecting the youth...walked by the megastore on Tuesday and was surprised to see how young the crowd waiting to see them perform was. They didn't seem to bother me too much tho the night of the concert. I can understand if I had a sweaty, tank top laden, out of tune dude all over me, it would have been annoying, but I guess I was lucky enough I guess to have a relatively chill crowd around me. I know its second nature to most of us to be cynical and critical of almost anything we do, but, shit, I had a hell of a time at the show, and would do it again tomorrow if I had the chance. Next year when they're playing somewhere like Hammerstein Ballroom or MSG, you'll look back at this show as the good old days. For now, I figure to enjoy what I’m lucky enough to see.

don't get me wrong..I had a great time at the show and loved the show the night before. One of the best live shows I have seen in a very long time. I just love making fun of me being old (well not that old) HA!

i went to the show at Volume. it was not a good idea to wear shoes at that event (dancers jumping up and down on shoes is NOT a good thing).

i am outraged by cara-the-concernt-goer's commentary. i do believe she could benefit from an ample dose of sunshine. perhaps she would enjoy a small kitten to brighten her days--for she merely lacks the understanding possessed by us, the REAL music fans who love FF for all their gay desires. cara: my advice to you (1) hock all remaining concert tix (2) win $150million this tuesday (3) share proceeds measured in 6 units w/ jj, ej, sl, mm and of course brown versus board of education the cat'

not enough people are referring to the band as "the ferd". we totally have to make that happen.
Score = 0
all i can say is that the philly show was horrendous. it was in a dance club that's usually split amongst four rooms. of course, they sold tickets based on the club's full capacity, not the capacity of the room where FF was playing. that one room had a thousand people trying to fit, when it should usually just fit a few hundred. the kids headbanging next to me were enough for me to loathe the crowd. the sound was honestly the worst i've ever heard. it was too hot and too dark and too crowded. the good thing was that when their set was done, a lot of people left and the dance party continued well into the night in somewhat more tolerable conditions.

CARA...
why did you bother going to the show in the first place? you sound like a whiny spoilsport. i mean, yea, devil horns are cheesy, but who fucking cares? get the stick out of your ass. i can picture your kind perfectly: standing too close to the stage when you cant handle yourself and making faces at the people who are having a good time and generally projecting a crappy attitude to everyone in a ten foot radius. next time stay home and maybe your ticket will go to someone who will actually appreciate it and have a good time.

why is franz ferdinand even playing? who needs shitty pop-ed up versions of gang of four tunes? try some real scottish music, like sluts of trust! you want a piece of me? well i want a piece of you too! SLUTS OF TRUST FOREVER!!!

Caught the act in DC last night and while they were entertaining...I could not help think of about 95 bands who have "been there done that". One thing that really pissed me off was that 99.1 HFS sponsored the evening, this equals quadrupled ticket prices and instant fame on the high school "nickelback rules" set...I hate the fucking radio.
BTW they were filming a live DVD last night...uugh.
Score = 0
Oh all of you, lighten up! I swear, you are all the people I loathe when I go to shows. I caught them in DC last night as well, BSmith, and while $20 at 9:30 club is a little on the higher end, seeing how utterly trendy they've gotten I was impressed they were still kept at a reasonable level. Filming the DVD there was cool.. it's a great venue and the crowd was way into it. And you wanna know something, all of you. Franz IS dance music! So fucking dance! And laugh and sing along and have a good time because YOU ARE AT A CONCERT. No one wants to see you pose and glower at everyone, no one really gives a shit. You came to see a band. Enjoy them.
They were awesome at 9:30 club, by the way. Totally on the ball. I had major issues seeing (I was kinda almost all the way on the side of the stage) but somewhere around Jacqueline I really stopped caring and started having fun.

I caught the DC show last night and it was great. BTW, I was the guy throwing up the horns and bouncing to the music. Sure, I got some shitty looks from morose, shoegazing hipster wankers that felt they were entitled to thumb their nose at everyone who wasn't acting like it was a Califone show. A little heads up people, you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. And if my singing along to 'Dark of the Matinee' irritated you, the next time FF comes to town, my advice to you is to stay at home, because I'll be there doing the same thing again.
Score = 0
okay, patrick. no one asked for your commentary on the dc show. read the post--"last night's franz ferdinand show" is referring to the one at VOLUME in NEW YORK. so save your "next time ff comes to town" bullshit for somewhere else. also, if people were giving you shitty looks, it was probably because your loud singing was rude. no one paid money to hear you sing.

I can't believe you're all *still* talking about Franz Ferdinand. You should be ashamed of yourselves, you sound like spotty schoolgirls. The unironic, mealy-mouthed arrogance displayed in some of these postings appals me. For the record, Cara is spot-on: Franz Ferdinand shows are ruined by gormless, middle class reptilians trying to dance to hackneyed Gang of Four rip-offs, having paid through the coked-up nose to get into badly-lit, badly-designed "clubs". She has my sympathy; the rest of you have my pity.

Y'all should have been at the Bowery to see !!!.

Wow.
Somewhere in the quest for ultimate coolness we forgot how to have a good time. First off when a show is in a warehouse in Billyburg expect it to be hot. Second -- unless you work for the band's label -- you don't have an obligation to only stand there arms crossed and stare at the band. You paid to go. Enjoy it.
The collection of too-cool-for-school hipsters and their trust funds are also to be expected -- did I mention it was in a warehouse in Billyburgh? Remember 2/3 of the crowd were told that they should be there by whatever hipster newsletter they subscribe to. The music didn't matter to them -- it was where they were supposed to be.
That is why a bounced around, sang along, and mostlikey sweated on you. Not because I was supposed to be there but because -- I know this is revolutionary -- I liked the band. Gang-of-Four ripoffs that they might be (isn't everything fucking derivative anyway?) it was still a great show. Trust fund fuckers aside.
Oh -- and I am 30ish. Another reason to flame me now I'm sure.

First of all...dancing, is a great think to do at a show. however jumping up and down uncontrollably like a fuckin lunatic isnt dancing and second to all the fuckin college frat boys trying to be cool and push people around and start a mosh pit go see green day or something dont come to a show and fuck around. I'm all about the good times at shows I've been going for years but when you become such an annoyance and spectical that those of us near you cant consentrate on the show, you need to go!! second have some consideration for those around you not everyone wants to hear you sing. I wont go in to detail because its been said before but all you people need some show etiqite lessons and if your not thew fuckin rockstar dont ware your aviators inside after 8pm because you look like a fuckin idiot!!
Score = 0
You've struck upon an important point - how to behave at rock shows. While I love living here, NYC is the worst place in the world to see a rock show b/c so many people are wondering about what "scene" their fellow concert-goers are from and simply stand around.
Score = 0
Agreed. Mosh pit bad. Dancing -- good.
Score = 0
Haha, why are all you hookers raggin so bad.
Score = 0
Did anybody who's bitching about the show say anything to the offenders? Like "hey, shut the fuck up?" Or "hey, stop jumping on me?" Most people are too embarrassed after someone tells them that to continue...Or did you think to just get up and move away from them? It's kind of a fact of life that bands are not strictly going to attract the coolest of the cool. Especially when they become more popular and mainstream. So you who complain have to weigh out whether the annoyances of the crowd are worth seeing the band in the first place. You will never get it both ways. Tickets for that show were selling for 3 times the face value, so obviously there are a lot of people who are willing to put up with it and take your ticket.
Really I'm just curious what the complainers are going to do about this? Stop going to shows? Doubt it. Only see bands that nobody’s ever heard of, then stop listening to them once they actually make it? That’s kind of dick. I've been reading people complaining about the "frat guy" and the "drunk chick" as long as I’ve been going to shows. Deal and enjoy...We don't need "etiquette lessons" to see a rock and roll show, thank you very much...that’s the fucking point.
Oh, and Scott...since you started this thread and everything...I'm curious what YOU thought of the show?
Score = 0
hey patrick--"cry me a river"? nice comeback.
Score = 0
Jumping up and down in mosh pits used to be called "Pogo-ing"... I would think most NYCers would still be familiar with it, but maybe punk has only really managed to survive in DC. I know we're supposed to be commenting about the NYC show, but part of what I always loved about going to see *any* band live was the dirty, sweaty, annoying reality of it. If you want something pristine for you to enjoy in a distinctly personal fashion, listen to a CD. Part of the great tradition of live music is the part where you're with everyone else.
And, really. If you're busting on Franz for being "Gang of Four ripoffs," and talking about how ridiculous it is that people like them at all.. why were you at the show? If my friends are going to a concert and I don't like the band, I take the night off. Why waste the money?
I went to the DC show by myself. Why? None of my friends are really Franz fans. But I am. So I went. And I had a great time.
Score = 0
> Oh, and Scott...since you started this thread

Ha ... I started the thread 'cause I knew Cara was itching to complain about the crowd. The crowd didn't bother me, just the heat. I enjoyed the band. They were rocktacular.

Dance, bitch. You sound like you're about as much fun as a case of herpes. Dance.

Im fascinated by this thread, and the general fuss this last slew of FF shows has caused. Scott, did you see all the hatred I got for writing up the show? Its like this mess of hipster-haters vs frat-boy-haters vs hipsters vs frat-boys is gonna self-implode and all of America is gonna be swept away in a deluge of beer, sweat, and bad dance moves. I mean, where do we go from here? Assuming we all love the music and go to shows for the music we love, how can we control the environment weve created? And assuming we cant control it, do we abandon what we love because of the mess? Fuck man.
Score = 0
karen, I'd say go to shows. Do not try to "control" the environment. Figure out a place to stand - Are you afraid of your black plastic frames being crushed? Do you not want people to touch you? Well, then the back and the sides are probably right for you. Once you find your perch, talk to your friends. You can talk about how excited you are. You can talk about the last time you saw the band and how the show was. I leave that to you. DO NOT, stand around self-conciously posing. Do not stand around checking out everyone's clothes to figure out what kind of "scene" you have on your hands. Ideally, your scene should be you and your friends and the other like-minded people near you. (The mellow people will be towards the sides and the back; the raucous-types will be front and center.) Then enjoy the show, listen to the music, maybe dance a little. By the way, is there another sub-division for (what I believe to be) the silent majority of people who hate hipsters, frat-boys and all others who have not grown out of the need to surround themselves groups of people in similar costumes in order to know what kind of music they like? The real division are people who enjoy live music as a synaesthetic experience versus those who only listen with their frontal lobes. I guess it's all valid, but please don't make me stand stock still if the band's any good.
Score = 0
janine, what are you talking about? why do you keep posting about people trying to "figure out what kind of 'scene' you have on your hands"? i don't know what you're talking about, but i'm embarrased for you.

The actual cool kids were in bed early on Friday because we decided to go see Acid Mothers Temple on Saturday instead. Wow, being crammed into a sweatbox with the people in this thread sounds super-unpleasant. I'm glad I've never heard Franz Flavorofthemonth.

Well, I'm talking about: "i'm embarrased for you." Why should you be? Dear lord!
Maybe I'm missing the point - maybe there's less concern for that than I think - but I cannot remember going to a show and even once noticing someone's shoes (unless they've made some sort of huge mistake like wering stilletos).

i don't know what you're talking about, janine.

Janine-- youre preaching to the wrong person. I hate people that stand still at Franz Ferdinand shows. I was making a general statement about the debate raging here. Theres no final answer and please dont turn this into me being "too cool" or too into "scenes." Im a muthafuckin peace-keeper, yo.

From the Black List over at The Black Table www.blacktable.com:
THE CROWD AT LAST FRIDAY'S FRANZ FERDINAND SHOW: Oh come on, Williamsburg. When did being a stylish little hipster preclude dancing? It was Franz Ferdinand, for chrissakes. The club got its show permit renewed less than 48 hours beforehand; it was one of the most anticipated concerts of the summer, it was hot and sweaty and late... and the Hipster Nation stood around like a fucking undertaker convention while the band played an amazing set. The guy behind me actually said these words: "Could you stop dancing? You're crowding my girlfriend." Then maybe you should put her back in her pretty glass cabinet, Antoine, because this was supposed to be a rock show. It's not like I was flailing around like an epileptic. But I guess any movement whatsoever was frowned upon, as the crowd looked more like a gently swaying field of corn, firmly rooted in place. I'm sure the band will be happy to avoid our neck of the woods next time around. Way to go, you boring twats. F -- Jason Persse

S&D and The Ferdies got much love in ATL last night. Very cool crowd with dancers (including me, a trust fund kid, WOW!) and non-dancers living and loving side by side in harmony.
Merch was rediculously overpriced, however. $22 for a Hanes beefy tee w/ Franz Ferdinand on it? Fuck you, money gobbling record label!!!

I am so happy I have good friends that are higher ups. Luckily, I saw FF long before their CD was released and MTV broadcast them into outerspace. Back then they were fun to see, there was room to move, space to breathe. Their show and their music was great. At Volume (and I love Volume) I was surrounded by the sweaty, humid RETARDO section of people talking during the show, hopping up and down and screaming like teenage wannabes. Dancing? I never saw anything like that on Soul Train. Oh wel... I can at least listen to them on my iPod and still enjoy --- but its on to a better smaller show next time...anyone with tickets to Madonna?
