Thom Yorke's New Band (!) Plays LA Next Week

thubmnail icon: Thom Yorke's New Band (!) Plays LA Next Week

If the Twilight or the 12" or the tribute tracks weren't enough to make you think Thom is enjoying his time away from Radiohead, try this one: The talented Mr. Yorke has put a brand new band together featuring Beck buddy Joey Waronker, mutual buddy Nigel Godrich, and cock-sock enthusiast Flea. They'll play "the Eraser stuff and the new songs" and you get the sense they're working on more. They even have shows. Next week! This is really happening, happening. Los Angeles's Orpheum is the site of the future sellouts, local Dirty Projectors remixers Lucky Dragons locked up the coveted opening slot. Thom shared some details in lower-cased lettering:

hi in the past couple of weeks i've been getting a band together for fun to play the eraser stuff live and the new songs etc.. to see if it could work! here's a photo.. its me, joey waronker, mauro refosco, flea and nigel godrich.

at the beginning of october the 4th and 5th we are going to do a couple of shows at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.
we don't really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz ..well ...we haven't got that much material yet!
but come and check it out if you are in the area. we've also got locals Lucky Dragons playing.
all the best

That comes via deadairspace. Tickets are available for 10/4 and 10/5. Let's hope there are many more.

at first i thought this was the strangest fucking pairing in the world, flea and yorke, but flea is actually an amazing musician who happens to play bass in an obnoxious band. his work on the mars volta's deloused in the comatorium was absolutely perfect. he's not going to be slapping and popping and dancing like an idiot... i'm pretty sure he's going to be Mike Balzary, the musician, for these shows.
also worth noting is that john frusciante is an amazing musician who happens to be in a fucking obnoxious band. i think the ridiculousness of RHCP can be attributed entirely to Anthony Keidis.

"the strangest fucking pairing in the world" - why? they are all rock musicians. it's not like it's country musicians with opera singers. the part I don't get is that no one even mentions mauro refosco, an excellent percussinest from forro in the dark. he also played on the last david byrne tour. i would hope you all know who joey waronker is. sounds like fun to me.

he might not be slapping and popping but i sure hope he dances around like an idiot. have you seen thom yorke on stage? he's more than happy to dance around like an idiot, so i bet he and flea could have some fun together on stage.

Thom Yorke does his art school dance. RHCP do some weird "bro" type thing. I wouldn't have minded so much that it was Thom, Joey Waronker and Nigel Godrich, but having Flea in there is really ridiculous.

i agree wholeheartedly to this statement. So many musicians have the same case of Flea-itis, and it really grinds me old gears.

Hmm.. wasn't it just a month ago or so that Billy Corgan played a few one off shows with an ex RHCP member, Dave Navarro? Both stories seem pretty much like the same thing, only one of them wasn't reported... oh well, go Thom Yorke!

Please, Thom forming a band with Flea is bad enough. Do you really have to bring Billy Corgan into this?

Truthfully, I think Flea playing with Thom Yorke has the potential to be really great, Flea is a tremendous bass player. And I'm telling you, the Billy Corgan/Dave Navarro collaboration was good as well. I think Billy Corgan is going to earn some credibility back with his new material. He is a weird crazy fuck, but he has the ability write some great tunes.

As far as rock musicians go, Flea is fist class. I don't think there's very many artists who wouldn't sound good with him.

an eraser set is just a ploy to get people to go to the show. they actually plan on just playing the odd couple theme song for a few hours. trust me i've checked my sources.

The only way this could get weirder is if Nigel Godrich convinces Thom and the rest of the band to do his unused idea from Beck's record club and that is to record/perform the entirety of Digital Underground's Sex Packets. I mean it would be perfect with Flea on bass.

This is either the best idea ever or a total flop that will cause Radiohead
to get their shit together and make a proper LP.

At any rate I'm seeing this happen.

I don't know what to make of this. On one hand you have a group of very successful, influential musicians like Flea and Thom Yorke collaborating for the first time. On the other hand the music of these two in particular is radically different from each other and it will be interesting to see how the combinations play off each other. I'm not saying that it will turn out bad or good, that remains to be heard. What I am saying is that they will bring a wide range of influences to the table and I wonder how they will fit different ideas together. I actually am looking forward to this.

And yes, Flea is a fucking idiot. Anyone who changes their name to 'Flea' before producing inane insipid souless children's surf-rock shite for two decades shouldn't be allowed in the same room as Thom Yorke.
