Today's Post On World Music: Linkin Park Fandom Is A Pan-Global Epidemic

Remember last year when we stumbled upon that map which made a virtual fireworks display from the names of songs being played all over the country in real time? Today's computerized cartography is even more global in its ambition, though less animated in execution. Meet today's procrastination quota at gracenote.com/map, which shows a snapshot of top artists and albums in all of your favorite countries! The Flash-based site uses data from the Gracenote Media Database, so while it is a self-selecting sample (the internet/iPod savvy), still it's fun to see Pink Floyd and Celine Dion in Iran's Top 5 artists (after Hayedey and Godgoosh, but you already knew that). It's not quite as much fun to see that Linkin Park seem to be our greatest musical export, nabbing To 10 honors in Pakistan, China, Brazil, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Paraguay, and Canada. Wait there's more! Linkin Park's #1 in India, Kazakhstan, and the Russian Federation. The United States is broken down by state; J.K. Rowling is so hott right now.

Represent that world town.

Radiohead is not even listed in the United Kingdom. Can that be right?! AC/DC is listed for Hungary; that's accurate, I will vouch for that.

@ tube suck

Presumably the Gracenote data set only refers to CDs being imported in iTunes (when the db lookup happens), so you'll see a lot more Beatles and Garth Brooks than Radiohead.

"album lookups" = meaning internet searches, not buying guide. Anyway those people in Finland are huge metal heads. I mean Nightwish, Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, System of a Down... boy! Overall Metallica is ripping it in Europe... hhaaahaha.

This is kind of interesting :)

Carrie Underwood must be proud she beat out the The Beatles in Oklahoma, South Dakota, Arkansas... she's second to them in more than half the other US states. The Beatles also lost to J.K. Rowling in Idaho and that's it! The Beatles world domination!!!!!

You americans sure love country music.

Hah, Grateful Dead is in the top ten for Oregon and Washington. I wish I were at home perpetuating the Great Northwest's stoner stereotype...

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...

Premature Evaluation: Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul

Pushing Noel off a stage in Toronto might bruise the erstwhile Oasis mouthpiece's ribs (maybe even his spirits) and cause the band to cancel a show or two, but nothing can stop the slow procession toward a new Oasis album....
