if he really knew ANYTHING about medication and psychiatry, he would know that no one still uses the prefrontal lobotomy anymore, or any of the other really barbaric and crazy methods of "treatment", but that electric shock is still used for only the most extreme cases of delusional depression, etc. and these are things that don't just go away by getting a new hobby or exercising more. schizophrenia is something that can impair people from being able to take care of themselves properly, and the only way it can be treated is with medication because research says that a schizophrenic person's brain produces too much dopamine. now, would tom cruise say that parkinson's disease should not be treated by the l-dopa medical therapy that is widely used and provides relief for a lot of patients? parkinson's is caused by a too-low level of dopamine, so it's just the opposite of schizophrenia. while i agree SO MUCH that people are grossly overmedicated for psychological disorders in this country, i can't deny that sometimes, medication is necessary to help someone live a happy and balanced life. if he had really read all the research, he would know that. he would also know that antidepressants aren't "antipsychotic" drugs, but now i'm just splitting hairs about what a moron he sounds like when he provides hard evidence to support his point like, "i know about the history of psychiatry". yeah, so do i, and i'm able to realize that there's not One Magical Thing that's best for everyone.

Tom really offended me by dismissing pyschiatry and anti-depressants. Anti-depressants and therapy have been a literal lifesaver for me. And I know other people as well that have benefitted from pyschiatric help. Society and the current younger generation seem more acceptant about getting medical help for emotional disorders. But Tom really shows how little he knows by saying that all people need to do is just exercise and eat vitamins to be cured of pyschiatric problems. And comparing pyschiatric drugs to the 'soma drug' from 'Brave New World' is really insulting to anyone who needs medical help. It's not freaking recreational, Tom.

Tom needs to restudy psychology. Stimulant and antidepressant medications are not the same as antipsychotics. If he really knew so much about psychology and psychiatry he would know there is a big difference in these medications. He would also know that there is scientific evidence that there is such a thing as a chemical imbalance and that medications, which are chemicals, help so many people live productive lives because they readjust brain chemistry. I agree that Ritalin has become an abused "street" drug but it did not start out that way. I sure hope no one in Tom's life ever faces a serious mental health problem. If my husband din't take his antidepressants and go to therapy he would'nt get throught this and function again as a regular person.

I agree with Kayte 100%. While we are definitely over medicated, and it is cause for serious concern, it is imperative for some to be medicated just to live their lives. And yes, Tom does have the Michael Jackson syndrome. I find it hilarious that he is trading intellect with Lauer... neither is too quick. And unlike Tom I can be clear about why I believe in my statements.
As a society we are falling behind in our critical thinking ability. This is the art of arguing intelligently, which Cruise clearly has no grasp on. You cannot say "drugs are bad" or "you don’t know what you are talking about", you must speak in facts when arguing something. The intellectual arguer would have specific facts to back up their ideals. Not blanket statements that say "that is bad". It is impossible to argue with that kind of statement. Bad can mean many things to many people. It reminds me of a certain President who went to war on the notion that "we need to get those evil doers." What a way to introduce war to an ‘advanced’ society. And we bought it, so why are we so surprised that Tom thinks he is so intelligent. He surrounds himself with ‘yes men’ and believes his own creation just as the leaders in our current world do. And there are enough idiots around to applaud.
I remember when he first got divorced (to Nicole) and was on a Barbara Walters special. She asked him if he was gay.. He said incredulously, "How can I be?!!? Look at me!! And I have two children!" I had to laugh as having children has nothing to do with 'gayness'. In fact, his children are adopted, which would lead an ignorant mind to find this as more evidence of his inability to be a ‘real man’. I know several couples who adopted, all but one are living a homosexual lifestyle. But in his mind he is Tom Cruise so having children proves he is not gay. He can put those two facts together and make some kind of correlation in his mind. He is Tom Cruise.
And when he did the Oprah stunt, he brought up the fact that he thought psychiatry was bunk. It affected me more than him jumping up and down on the couch like a chimpanzee. I almost wrote a letter about the remarks to the show about how dangerous it was to have a popular personality say something like that without a proper contradictory argument presented. I guess enough were offended and wrote as he is now making a topic out of the psychiatry comments. How many starry eyed women (and men) went off their meds that Oprah day? Now this!
It is dangerous to have political debate with only one side heard. If he isn't interested in speaking about his films and 'personality' but rather the sciences, I would like to see him with all his 'knowledge' handle a true debate with others who 'know the origin of psychology'. No, he chooses Matt Lauer and successfully presents a weak and empty argument. I don’t mind if a TV personality has an opinion about the welfare of the world. I care that the argument is based in fact, not feeling.

After watching the Matt Laurer/Tom Cruise interview, it was striking to find that after so many years of being in the public lime-light and having had many interviews that Cruise lacks the ability to answer questions fully or at all. If he thinks that taking vitamins and exercise is the answer to serious mental illnesses then it is evident that he has overdosed on vitamins A & E - ie. vitamins 'arrogance' & 'ego'.

Sad, when an uneducated celebrity can garner so much attention for his wacky views. He really does need a higher education so he can learn to read & think critically. I feel like telling him, "Tom, Tom, you're glib!"
Personally, I will not be stopping medication, which - while it has been problematic at times- has really saved my life. It's hilarious to think that taking vitamins could have brought me out of the hell I was living through.
In fact, for me as for many others (definitely a much larger universe than just those suffering from post-partum depression) delaying proper medical care just allowed the illness to become worse. I feel fortunate to have survived & have no current plans to take up Scientology unless I can be at the top & collect lucrative fees to pay for my medical care!
But, strange as it may seem, at the same time I do agree with those who argue that these medications are over-prescribed. I would just say caveat emptor & that they can have wild & wicked side effects so don't take them unless you really need them.

Tom needs to get over his over inflated ego and get educated on depression and clinical psycology. Many people throughout the world suffer from depression, which is a treatable DISEASE. If a person had diabetes you'd give them insulin for such a disease, and depression that doesn't respond to therapy and behavioral changes does have a solution. Medication, carifully prescribed and monitered by a qualified clinician is a proven treatment. There is indeed clear scientific data in the United States and dozens of other modern countries that clearly have evidence that chemical disturbances exist. Diet and exercise can definately help a great many suffering with a mild disorder, however those who do not respond to such interventions often do respond positively to medication and therapy. May I remind people out there that vitamins are not regulated by the FDA, can be dangerous and even deadly, and for most of us who are eating a well balanced meal and do not have an underlying medical condition do not need vitamins.
Yes, medications in this country are very overprescribed for numerous conditions. However, I doubt Tom is qualified to decide who should get what,when, and for what reasons.
The last time I checked, Tom was acting manic on the Oprah show about his beloved Kate, and acting impulsively by proposing marriage after a very brief courtship. Perhaps he should get a medical evaluation of his erratic behavior.
I do believe that Tom has no degree in medicine that would make him qualified to make any medical judgements about himself or anyone else. Further more, he has not participated in any clinical studies to measure whether or not chemical imbalances do or do not exist.

I must say that all of these posts I have read this evening are quite inspiring and I agree with most. I am a Christian woman. But that's not my point. Feeling love and compassion for other human beings is the epitomy of most religions if the person is sincere. These "man-made, let's make some bucks on a theory" so-called religions are the devil incarnate in my opinion. Still, the point is, Mr. Cruise knows no more than I do about being a physician. I wish people would leave Tom Cruise alone. At least he had the guts to speak what he believes and I think it is about time someone stood up to psychiatry and the drugs that are prescribed by psychiatrist for every sort of problem. They hand it out as candy and has anyone read the long long list of side effects. The drug companies are doing their best to hide these horrendous side effects and even the FDA has put out warnings. I am shocked that so many people have been brainwashed or fallen for the take a pill to solve any problem in life. What a cope out. I would never let anyone talk me into taking a mind altering drug to fix my so called mental problem.
I know that one can be depressed and believe me I went through serious depression, suicidal thoughts, and insomnia for over 5 months where I thought I could not make it one more day. But I found out where my problem stemmed from and fixed it and I never had to resort to psychiatric drugs. Way to go Tom. Maybe people will wake up and smell the coffee and the psychiatrist who push these drugs will be exposed.
