Tom Cruise Freaks Out Today

Props to Gawker for transcribing this morning's insane Q&A between Katie Holmes' Boston Phoenix-hating fiance and Matt Lauer.

TOM: There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance!
MATT: But —
TOM: No, Matt, I know these things...
Read the transcript and WATCH THE VIDEO. I'd like to post a Scientology-related tune for full effect. Anyone got an MP3 of "Famous Blue Raincoat" handy?

UPDATE: OK, I watched the whole thing. Sure, ritalin is overprescribed, but Tom Cruise is such a dick. It's long, so here are Mr. Cruise's best lines:

05:43 "I like sitting here talking to you."
[Commercial break after which Tom gets "fiery."]
07:46 "I've never agreed with psychology, EVER."
08:04 "I really care about Brooke Shields."
08:52 "Do you know now that ritalin is a street drug? Do you understand that?" [Laurer tries to speak] "No, no, Matt, Matt, I'm asking you a question ... You don't know the history of psychiatry ... [Brooke Shields] doesn't understand the history of psychiatry. She doesn't understand in the same way YOU don't understand it Matt."
10:07 "Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt. You don't even - you're glib. You don't even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That's what I've done ... You should be a little bit more responsible."

Poor Katie.

Talk about anti-depressants, pissed off at a squirt gun, his love for Katie Holmes...

All Tom Cruise has to say is... "Go see my new movie, War of the Worlds."

No Famous Blue Raincoat, but I do have an L Ron Hubbard-produced LP called Space Jazz from 1982. Apparently, it was created as the soundtrack to the book Battlefield Earth. Almost all the songs are credited to Hubbard, and the band includes Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke. Tracks include Funeral for a Planet, March of the Psychlos and my favorite, Terl, the Security Director. "Space Jazz is the first real computer music that will appeal to mass public. It antiquates past music like the cathedral organ wiped away blowing on a blade of grass." (from the back cover)

You'd think one of these scientology folks at some point would suddenly remember the fact that the whole religion was started on a bet between two pulp novelists and decide to quit.

Incidentally, I happen to think that way too many people are on anti-depressants and other such medication, so Tom's not entirely off in his fear of a world dominated by them, but the source of his angst is definitely terrifying.

Then again, if you've ever snorted Ritalin, you know that the shit is fun.

I am not into antidepressants as a general rule. However, to say that no one should EVER use them is extreme. He has forgotten what the real world is all about. Maybe he believes that everything will magically work out in 200 minutes or less!

You know (nitpicky voice), Cruise probably hates the Boston Phoenix not the Boston Herald...considering the reporter was from the Phoenix.

Not that there aren't reasons to hate the Herald...there are many.

For those non-Bostonians, the Phoenix is the local alt-weekly publication and the Herald is the local daily tabloid newspaper.

Matt Lauer is at least as annoying as Cruise

and the truth is the country is over mediacated...

i have no use for scientology, or their aggressive recruitemnt techniques... but maybe some dorks need it...

if yer lost , get a map...maybe this religion is their map... gotta be better for you than Ritalin & Prozac... or coke & heroin

& Scientology, as annoying, and obviously bunk as it is, can't be any worse than that other opiate of the masses "Christianity"...

Jesus Freaks , Muslims, Jews & What have yous, they have been pushing their failed panacea's for thousands of years...has scientology even hit it's 50th B-Day?!

give the new kid on the block a break...what did it ever do to you?

if he really knew ANYTHING about medication and psychiatry, he would know that no one still uses the prefrontal lobotomy anymore, or any of the other really barbaric and crazy methods of "treatment", but that electric shock is still used for only the most extreme cases of delusional depression, etc. and these are things that don't just go away by getting a new hobby or exercising more. schizophrenia is something that can impair people from being able to take care of themselves properly, and the only way it can be treated is with medication because research says that a schizophrenic person's brain produces too much dopamine. now, would tom cruise say that parkinson's disease should not be treated by the l-dopa medical therapy that is widely used and provides relief for a lot of patients? parkinson's is caused by a too-low level of dopamine, so it's just the opposite of schizophrenia. while i agree SO MUCH that people are grossly overmedicated for psychological disorders in this country, i can't deny that sometimes, medication is necessary to help someone live a happy and balanced life. if he had really read all the research, he would know that. he would also know that antidepressants aren't "antipsychotic" drugs, but now i'm just splitting hairs about what a moron he sounds like when he provides hard evidence to support his point like, "i know about the history of psychiatry". yeah, so do i, and i'm able to realize that there's not One Magical Thing that's best for everyone.

Tom Cruise has literally become the character of Vincent (from "Collateral")... only he's not killing people with guns and violence... it's worse; he's killing us with his own untreated psychoses.

He should be placed on Homeland Security's watch-list; he is definitely gonna crack any minute (if he isn't already on it).

Matt Lauer (and even though he annoys the hell out of me, as they all do on the Today Show) should have had the chance to slap Tom for talking to him the way that he did this morning.

But, did you know that Kabbalah was started in the 70's by an insurance salesman?

I know of many people from whom a chemical inbalance is a very real thing and drugs such as prozac and paxil have changed these peoples lives for the better.

I do agree that the ADHD label and ritlain is over prescribed.

the only so-called "research" mr. cruise has performed, i'm sure has been out of literature provided to him through his church of $cientology. the interview with matt lauer was FANTASTIC because it clearly illustrates all of the reprehensibly-evasive and deceptive communication techniques taught by that "church".

tom cruise doesn't know which way is up, and all this media hoo-ha has probably been carefully devised by his church handlers, as part of a "secret mission" for them to get more members. it's clearly a push, tom's big "mission".

it makes me a bit sick to my stomach, because while scientology seems harmless enough when looked at from afar - even laughable, on so many levels - when you personally know people who have been sucked into it, or have been touched by it in some way directly, it becomes very, very scary. but again, the matt lauer interview? hiLARious!

as the google research continues, i came across this:

Cohen’s dislocated situation in New York led him to exploring different sexual, spiritual and
pharmaceutical pathways, and one was scientology. In 1968, as he was driving down sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, with Joni Mitchell, she spotted a building with a number of women wearing saris and handing out material. Above the door a large sign which read ”Scientology”. ”What is Scientology?” she asked Cohen. ”Oh, some crackpot religion,” he replied. A few weeks later, he called from New York to say that he’d joined them and that they were going to rule the world. But a few months later, Cohen told Mitchell he was disenchanted and that he’d had some difficulty extricating himself from it. Initially, Scientology offered the goal of a ”clear path”, (”Did
you ever go clear?” he asks in ”Famous Blue Raincoat”). Cohen had also heard that it was a good place to meet women. On June 17th, 1968, Cohen received a Scientology certificate awarding him ”Grade IV - release.” (Nadel 160).

Matt Lauer talks about people he knows who are "better" because of their prescription drug use. It is really only better for pharmaceutical companies and our government when people do drugs that make them act like good little zombies. Tom refers to the book "Brave New World" where drugs are a mandatory part of daily life enforced by the government so the population can be controlled. Your depressed take a pill, your stressed take a pill, you don't feel the way you want to feel take a pill. When the population accepts drugs as the answer to change people with grumpy or rebellious personalities it is basically accepting mind control for us to all feel and act the same.

Tom Cruise doesnt want A Brave New World to become a reality. The funny thing is Scientology is extremely close to such a facist big brother society.
In Dianetics book, the Scientology bible, L. Ron says only Clear people should be allowed to vote, that is people who have done all the auditing levels in Scientology.

Scientology has so many rules and regulations. They are required to tell everyuthing to their supervisor. They cannot discuss Scientology, or criticize it. If they do they can be punished. If family or friends do anything contrary to this cults beliefs they have to report it. And they will be ordered to finish their relationships.

My theory: Tom himself is ADD or ADHD (many successful folks arem, like the CEO of JetBlue). It's showing in a bad way now - that Matt Matt Matt Matt Matt is so totally ADHD.

I also believe he is experiencing, in public, a manic high. His extreme behavior with Katie Holmes is an example. I feel sorry for Nicole having to raise children with this cocksucker (take that as you will). I cannot imagine he lets her have any say in ANYTHING. He reminds me of Michael Jackso in that he lives in his own world and seems to feel he is omniscient and omnipotent.

I refuse to see his new movie.

I think its interesting how Tom Cruise keeps saying "I've read about the history of psychology" but he never goes into any detail or gives examples to back up his points that are more concrete than "electric shock therapy is bad." He doesn't seem to have a clue what he's talking about. The scary thing is that people will listen to him because he's a celebrity.

Go to college and study chemistry and biology how the body works and then come back and tell us there's no such thing as chemical imbalances and drugs are simply a "mask."
I hope Tom doesnt think he is the only one who knows that electric shock therapy without consent doesnt really work and that back in the day when people got lobotomies to "help" their mental situation is ridiculous. Um..we know, sweetie...that's why those things are not done any more. So what other "surprising" facts do you have to back up your completely insane views?
Three words: Go. To. College.
There's no such thing as bad publicity? Well, I absolutely refuse to see any movie with an affiliation to Tom again because of his recent actions, words and.."publicity." Good job ruining your career, babe.

chemistry and biology do not apply to Scientologist's...they actually believe that when someone gets sick ie a cold or cancer, it's because of a past negative instance in a present or past life. SERIOUSLY. These people are whack jobs with a capital W. I wish the media types would ask some real questions to Tom about scientology, like wtf is a theatan? Wtf is the planet Xenu? What where you in a past life Tom? All scientologist have past life story, the nut job I worked for told me that he was a British naval captain in his past life. Imagine how Tom Cruise would react if he got Punk'd. You know that hidden camera show on mtv with Ashton Kutcher. Katie Holmes got Punk'd once, so why not Cruise.

I can just picture him saying/screaming to Kutcher: "Why would you do that? Why would you do that? Jerk!"

How this guy managed to get Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and now Katie Holmes into bed is a mystery to me. Those women must be really naive...

The way I heard it, L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology and science fiction writer, was at a Sci-Fi convention in the 50's and told a fellow author he was going into religion because "there was more money in it."
Anyone who has followed the "religion" knows it's a money-maker for the greedy "auditors" who prey on, and collect money from, the gullible. Guess where Tom fits in?

Larry, I know they believe in all that psycho stuff. I just feel that if these people actually studied and learned how the body worked and how actual chemical imbalances occur and things of that nature, then they could understand how stupid the things they believe are. Maybe not, though since they are completely brainwashed.
Anyway, I found this article that was in Time Magazine in 1991. It is really scary. Scientology tried for 5 years to sue Time over this article, but Time Magazine won...

Tom needs to go to college and take some biology classes cuz he seriously lacks solid arguments in the psychology department. The poor guy is obviously illiterate. Anyway, I think the most ironic thing is that Kate will probably end up alcoholic and addicted to coke, painkillers, heroine and prozac, by the time she reaches 30, when she'll find out that her so-called husband was not only impotent& infertile but was also banging men on the down low. Then she'll spend the rest of her life in & out of rehab like so many other scorned/betrayed celebrity wifeys...

Tom really offended me by dismissing pyschiatry and anti-depressants. Anti-depressants and therapy have been a literal lifesaver for me. And I know other people as well that have benefitted from pyschiatric help. Society and the current younger generation seem more acceptant about getting medical help for emotional disorders. But Tom really shows how little he knows by saying that all people need to do is just exercise and eat vitamins to be cured of pyschiatric problems. And comparing pyschiatric drugs to the 'soma drug' from 'Brave New World' is really insulting to anyone who needs medical help. It's not freaking recreational, Tom.

I do feel a lot less sorry for Nicole now -- who wouldn't be glad to be out of a relationship with such an ass!

not sure if chris ives's post that "Kabbalah was started in the '70s" is meant to be "ironic." If that's the case nevermind. BUT: Kabbalah is a thousand or so more years old. Came about around the same time as the Crusaders were pilfering the Middle East. I think Hollywood's embrace of it dates to the late '80s and that lovable Sandra Berhardt, but otherwise...c'mon, don't equate that with Scientology. A hugely entertaining discourse on the Kabbalah can be found in Umberto Eco's fantastic novel Foucault's Pendulum. But something tells me this might not be the frorum where people are inclided to read such books...

Tom needs to restudy psychology. Stimulant and antidepressant medications are not the same as antipsychotics. If he really knew so much about psychology and psychiatry he would know there is a big difference in these medications. He would also know that there is scientific evidence that there is such a thing as a chemical imbalance and that medications, which are chemicals, help so many people live productive lives because they readjust brain chemistry. I agree that Ritalin has become an abused "street" drug but it did not start out that way. I sure hope no one in Tom's life ever faces a serious mental health problem. He does not seem to have any idea what people who are diagnosed with mental health problems and those that love them face each day. How sad to be so ignorant. I hope people question what he says and still seek help despite it.

Unfortunately for Tom's case, his alternative to the evils of psychiatry will set you back a few hundred grand. Pretty convenient. Hard not to question the motives. Let's see him publish some hard numbers on Auditing and the more hardcore "science" of Scientology, and we'll see what's what.

Why doesn't an interviewer just ask him if Scientology's secrets have anything to do with aliens? Anything about mankind's ties to ancient races of extraterrestrial overlords. Fill us in. If he expects us to sit through his sermons, let's see him reciprocate.

I agree with Kayte 100%. While we are definitely over medicated, and it is cause for serious concern, it is imperative for some to be medicated just to live their lives. And yes, Tom does have the Michael Jackson syndrome. I find it hilarious that he is trading intellect with Lauer... neither is too quick. And unlike Tom I can be clear about why I believe in my statements.

As a society we are falling behind in our critical thinking ability. This is the art of arguing intelligently, which Cruise clearly has no grasp on. You cannot say "drugs are bad" or "you don’t know what you are talking about", you must speak in facts when arguing something. The intellectual arguer would have specific facts to back up their ideals. Not blanket statements that say "that is bad". It is impossible to argue with that kind of statement. Bad can mean many things to many people. It reminds me of a certain President who went to war on the notion that "we need to get those evil doers." What a way to introduce war to an ‘advanced’ society. And we bought it, so why are we so surprised that Tom thinks he is so intelligent. He surrounds himself with ‘yes men’ and believes his own creation just as the leaders in our current world do. And there are enough idiots around to applaud.

I remember when he first got divorced (to Nicole) and was on a Barbara Walters special. She asked him if he was gay.. He said incredulously, "How can I be?!!? Look at me!! And I have two children!" I had to laugh as having children has nothing to do with 'gayness'. In fact, his children are adopted, which would lead an ignorant mind to find this as more evidence of his inability to be a ‘real man’. I know several couples who adopted, all but one are living a homosexual lifestyle. But in his mind he is Tom Cruise so having children proves he is not gay. He can put those two facts together and make some kind of correlation in his mind. He is Tom Cruise.

And when he did the Oprah stunt, he brought up the fact that he thought psychiatry was bunk. It affected me more than him jumping up and down on the couch like a chimpanzee. I almost wrote a letter about the remarks to the show about how dangerous it was to have a popular personality say something like that without a proper contradictory argument presented. I guess enough were offended and wrote as he is now making a topic out of the psychiatry comments. How many starry eyed women (and men) went off their meds that Oprah day? Now this!

It is dangerous to have political debate with only one side heard. If he isn't interested in speaking about his films and 'personality' but rather the sciences, I would like to see him with all his 'knowledge' handle a true debate with others who 'know the origin of psychology'. No, he chooses Matt Lauer and successfully presents a weak and empty argument. I don’t mind if a TV personality has an opinion about the welfare of the world. I care that the argument is based in fact, not feeling.

Your Husband: "Doctor, do you have anything you can give me for my bad behavior? My wife says she is going to leave me if I don't quit acting like an idiot. Her family hates me because of the things I say and do."
Doctor:” I sure do. I was playing golf with the pharmaceutical representative just last week and he gave me some free sample of Lobatomal. It has all the benefits of shock treatment without the nasty contact burns from the electrodes. Of course after you’re hooked on them I will not have anymore free samples for you. After watching the Matt Laurer/Tom Cruise interview, it was striking to find that after so many years of being in the public lime-light and having had many interviews that Cruise lacks the ability to answer questions fully or at all. If he thinks that taking vitamins and exercise is the answer to serious mental illnesses then it is evident that he has overdosed on vitamins A & E - ie. vitamins 'arrogance' & 'ego'.

Sad, when an uneducated celebrity can garner so much attention for his wacky views. He really does need a higher education so he can learn to read & think critically. I feel like telling him, "Tom, Tom, you're glib!"

Personally, I will not be stopping medication, which - while it has been problematic at times- has really saved my life. It's hilarious to think that taking vitamins could have brought me out of the hell I was living through.

In fact, for me as for many others (definitely a much larger universe than just those suffering from post-partum depression) delaying proper medical care just allowed the illness to become worse. I feel fortunate to have survived & have no current plans to take up Scientology unless I can be at the top & collect lucrative fees to pay for my medical care!

But, strange as it may seem, at the same time I do agree with those who argue that these medications are over-prescribed. I would just say caveat emptor & that they can have wild & wicked side effects so don't take them unless you really need them.

Brave New World indeed?

cheers, jon

Tom needs to get over his over inflated ego and get educated on depression and clinical psycology. Many people throughout the world suffer from depression, which is a treatable DISEASE. If a person had diabetes you'd give them insulin for such a disease, and depression that doesn't respond to therapy and behavioral changes does have a solution. Medication, carifully prescribed and monitered by a qualified clinician is a proven treatment. There is indeed clear scientific data in the United States and dozens of other modern countries that clearly have evidence that chemical disturbances exist. Diet and exercise can definately help a great many suffering with a mild disorder, however those who do not respond to such interventions often do respond positively to medication and therapy. May I remind people out there that vitamins are not regulated by the FDA, can be dangerous and even deadly, and for most of us who are eating a well balanced meal and do not have an underlying medical condition do not need vitamins.
Yes, medications in this country are very overprescribed for numerous conditions. However, I doubt Tom is qualified to decide who should get what, when, and for what reasons.
The last time I checked, Tom was acting manic on the Oprah show about his beloved Kate, and acting impulsively by proposing marriage after a very brief courtship. Perhaps he should get a medical evaluation of his erratic behavior.
I do believe that Tom has no degree in medicine that would make him qualified to make any medical judgements about himself or anyone else. Further more, he has not participated in any clinical studies to measure whether or not chemical imbalances do or do not exist.
Stick to acting Tom or get a better education!

I must say that all of these posts I have read this evening are quite inspiring and I agree with most. I am a Christian woman. But that's not my point. Feeling love and compassion for other human beings is the epitomy of most religions if the person is sincere. These "man-made, let's make some bucks on a theory" so-called religions are the devil incarnate in my opinion. Still, the point is, Mr. Cruise knows no more than I do about being a physician. He has never walked in any one elses shoes and has made a complete ass of himself. I sometimes wonder if he hasn't already had a frontal lobotomy. His behavior is reminisant of a egocentric blow hard who thinks his poop doesn't stink. I cracked up by the post who suggested he go to a deserted island and take Alec Baldwin with him. I do agree we are an over medicated society, however, Mr. Cruise is not qualified, as I am not, to make those decisions for anyone but himself. And the funniest thing is: he could never act his way out of a paper bag to begin with. I wonder whose couch he slept on to get a movie role to begin with. Kudo's to most of the posts here. Thank God you people are smarter than this very sick man.

Tom, have you ever read the history of Scientology? It's founder, LaFayette Ronald Hubbard tried to become a psychiatrist, but since he was basically mentally retarded, he couldn't pass any of the neccessary classes. In an effort to become famous, he he turned to writing science fiction books. He made up a planet with a being called Xenu, and that is what you people are worshiping. Hubbard even said he made the religion up on a bet that he could get more people to believe him than Bob Heinlein (another author), remember? That means, it's MADE UP, like a script, like, not true. Get it? Fake!
Geeze, I'm surprised that there's not a Wizard of Oz religious cult out there somewhere.
Here's a quick lesson on the History of Scientology http://lisatrust.bogie.nl/scientology/history1.htm

And here's an actual transcript of Hubbards grades that forced the school to expell him because he couldn't understand even the basics of his classes.

I wish people would leave Tom Cruise alone. At least he had the guts to speak what he believes and I think it is about time someone stood up to psychiatry and the drugs that are prescribed by psychiatrist for every sort of problem. They hand it out as candy and has anyone read the long long list of side effects. The drug companies are doing their best to hide these horrendous side effects and even the FDA has put out warnings. I am shocked that so many people have been brainwashed or fallen for the take a pill to solve any problem in life. What a cope out. I would never let anyone talk me into taking a mind altering drug to fix my so called mental problem.

I know that one can be depressed and believe me I went through serious depression, suicidal thoughts, and insomnia for over 5 months where I thought I could not make it one more day. But I found out where my problem stemmed from and fixed it and I never had to resort to psychiatric drugs. Way to go Tom. Maybe people will wake up and smell the coffee and the psychiatrist who push these drugs will be exposed.
