Toasting History's Favorite Fictional Musicians
Grūpthink has a list of favorite fictional musicians. (Thanks for the tip, Holotone.) There's some pretty funny stuff on there like Milli Vanilli, Zack Attack!, and the BC-52s, but we're not sure we can actually consider some of them fictional. Wonder what the definition is ... like Gwar? The Monkees? Um, OOIOO? We appreciate the super obscure stuff like Adrian Leverkuhn of Thomas Mann's novel Dr. Faustus. Of course, once you get past 40, most of 'em only have a single vote and get pretty minor, but hey. Before we get started, we need to lobby for Dr. Teeth and Co., who are pinned at 18. Totally top 5 material.
Not to mention their death metal turn with Beaker on guest scowl. Anyhow, the list...

41 OOIOO
40 Dingos Ate My BabyGorillaz? What do you think? We think they're real. Any fictional bands that were missed? We'll start: Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Gifted and Black from The Rutles. The Rutles.

Score = 0
Uh, just off the top of my head, The Ruttles perhaps? Seeing as they predate every group on the list with the possible exception of the BC-52s? OH, also, Wyckyd Sceptre was a million times the band 3 Times One Minus One is. Oh, and Cylon and Garfunkel from Futurama has to make the list, if for nothing else than Garfunkel's refutation, "Over my dead career!" Oh, and of course the obvious Nirvana parody Nuns in a Blender from the Critic (noteworthy because somehow the producers felt lead singer Johnny Wrath, modeled after Cobain, would seem more at ease rolling around on a grassy hillside in lieu of heroin abuse.) And what's the ruling on actual bands releasing music under fictional names fabricated for a particular album, like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, or Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, or Chris Gaines (not that Chris Gaines would normally be mentioned in the same breath as the first two, but the basic idea is the same.)
Score = 0
Where's 2Gether?!
I'm really happy Du Jour made this list, though.
Score = 0
Would Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band qualify?
Score = 0
Stillwater. Also The Mosquitos from Gilligan's Island, featuring a positively svelte Mrs. Thurston Howell the 3rd. The Mosquitos? Is that right? I think that's right.
Score = 0
I ditto that - where the hell are the Rutles?
Wouldn't mind seeing Crucial Taunt on there either.
Score = 0
Jet Screamer (Jetsons)
Eep Opp Ork Ah Ah (That Means Meet Me Tonight, or That Means I Love You)
Score = 0
Hedwig and the Angry Inch mos def deserves a spot, near the top, even. I do appreciate the inclusion of Prozzak, though. So damn fly. Also, move up The Commitments about 10 places.
Score = 0
What?! No Rod Torfleson's Armada featuring Herman Menderchuck? For shame.
Score = 0
What about Big Fun, known for their hit "Teen Suicide (Don't Do It)"?
Score = 0
First to come to mind was:
Crucial Taunt from Waynes World!
Score = 0
no love for Fur-Q?
Score = 0
some good ones, and since south park's faith + 1 made it on there, what about "finger bang"? the fictional boy band.
oh, and is DVDA a fictional band? I don't think they have an album, just random songs.
Score = 0
Stillwater should definitely make the list. Also, I think Sgt. Pepper's and Ziggy Stardust can't be included, as they're not necessarily fictional bands, but rather real bands that opted to assume an identity for artistic purposes. Even the Gorillaz is really just a side project for Damon Albarn and friends, the band was merely a construct through which they could make and release music. Similarly, I cannot see bands like the Commitments and the Monkeys making the list, simply because while they started out as fictional bands, they ended up as real bands, releasing albums, touring, etc.
Score = 0
where are the wierd sisters? harry p represent.
Score = 0
Monkees, not Monkeys, sorry.
Score = 0
fall out boy...oh wait, i just wish they were fictional.
Score = 0
Not only is the Muppet Movie nostalgic gold, but Dr. Teeth & Electric Mayhen were funkier than most real bands can claim to be. I dare the Dap Kings to out-dap that shit.
Score = 0
I'll make my first my comment here, ever, for the titte brothers from ucb. and roy teppert or kandlecrush from tom goes...
Score = 0

As usual, hip hop is always neglected on these lists...
NWH (Fear of a Black Hat)
Score = 0
Scum of the Earth (from WKRP in Cincinnati)
Score = 0
The Swanky Modes from Tapeheads. There was also some fictional Swedish band in that movie and Devo did the song for them. Baby Doll.
Score = 0
@Jeff: Nice one.
Score = 0
Swanky Modes: nice pull davey! And hip-hop isn't neglected cherry, it's just tougher to come up with decent examples of purely fictional hip-hop acts, unless of course you just want to randomly dig through early '90s TV shows and track down one off references to MCs made by and for people who had no idea what hip-hop was. besides, CB4 is still up there. STRAIGHT OUTTA LOCASH. Though NWH is definitely a good one.
Score = 0
Autobahn from Lebowski is way too high on that list.
Also, would Polaris from "The Adventures of Pete and Pete" count? They are way better than most of this list.
Score = 0
what gives? No Hey, That's my Bike, or Citizen Dick?
Score = 0
It's nice to see Barry Jive & the Uptown 5 at number 30.
No Cap'n Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters? or the band from California Dreams?
Score = 0
jesse and the rippers.
Score = 0

Score = 0

Frozen Embryos! Jared Leto's fake band > Jared Leto's for-real band.

i found out the donnas existed thanks to their appearance as "the electrocutes" in a movie (can't remember which). btw, the electrocutes were cooler.

Crystal Shit. The Doors cover band from the Dead Milkmen classic "Bitchin' Camaro." And don't forget Camel Lips, er, L7 in Serial Mom.
Score = 0
um... mystik spiral from daria... led by trent
Score = 0
How about "Hot Sundae"? Wasn't that the name of the all-girl group that Kelly, Lisa, and Jessie formed to sing "I'm So Excited" on Saved By The Bell? And then Jessie has that breakdown over taking speed and says "I'm so... so... scared!"
On a more serious note (as serious as this subject can get), I'm kinda surprised this list is missing these:
-Steel Dragon (from Marky Mark's Rockstar)
-Ruckus (aka My Morning Jacket in Elizabethtown)
-Stillwater (from Almost Famous)
-Frankie Wilde (the "deaf DJ" from It's All Gone Pete Tong)
-Scrantonicity (from "The Office"!)
Score = 0
There should be room at the bottom of the list for Steaming Wolf Penis from the show/movie Jerkbeast.
Score = 0
Why is OOIOO on this list? It is a real band fronted by Yoshimi P-We who is also of the Boredoms.
Score = 0
Where are "Flight of the Conchords"?
Score = 0
wykked sceptre from mr. show!

Another HUGE vote for Rod Torfleson's Armada featuring Herman Menderchuck!!!!
Also big ups for the Berserker vote.
Score = 0
What about Reggie and the Full Effect / Fluxuation / Common Denominator - all James Dewees fictional bands
Score = 0
I guess fictional bands are better when they are actually real bands (e.g., The Monkees, Gorillaz and Blues Brothers appearing at the top). Who wrote this list, St. Anslem?
And where is Apollonia Six from Purple Rain? Or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turltes band from the early nineties?
Score = 0
on the real-bands-releasing-music-under-fake-names front, i could go for some dukes of stratosphear.
