Interpol's Streaming Our Love To Admire, Playing MSG

The broody BK crew has announced a full fall tour, and you'll forgive us for shooting straight to the NYC date, to find they've booked Madison Square Garden. We've got the rest of the dates for you, too -- but MSG is notable 'cause it's larger than anything else on the tour, and 'cause it's, um, MSG. Of course, they're indie by a strict constructionist's view no more, and you can be sure Capitol will roll out the promotional muscle ... but are they Garden-sized? Maybe, if we're judging by the line of ticketless miracle-seekers at Bowery last month.

Well if the band's new one has eluded you so far, you can stream the whole deal over at MTV, read our crib notes on the record here, and/or watch 'em do a few of those tunes live at AOL. Be the most gloomy person at your BBQ!

But before you do, riddle us this: Is Interpol now the biggest of the 'NYC Four', as one of you called them (Interpol, Walkmen, YYYs, Strokes)? The best? (This should be fun.) Take the jump for Interpol dates.

it's tough but i'll go with
strokes
yyys
interpol
walkmen

love all of them.

you know that the strokes could book MSG for their next tour if they want. albert's already booking some decent venues on his own!

both the yyy's and interpol keep making the same album. y/n? pretentious hipster rock is what that is. and karen o lives in silverlake now, doesnt she? walkmen? not big on them, i'll leave it at that. the strokes... is this it? classic album. and in each of their albums, whether "acclaimed" or not, they at least give us one gem of a song that i cant stop listening to, ahem... "you only live once".
i give it to... THE STROKES!
my dad is dead > interpol

Gotta go with the 'Pol on this one. YYY's and Strokes tie for second. Walkmen had a cool debut album, IMHO, but I never even thought of them in respects to the NY4 until reading it just now.

they're playing MSG proper, not the theater. that's like 20,000, unless they decide to set it up to accommodate less. bet they sell it out at 15K.

What about TV on the Radio? They've gotta belong somewhere in there...

tv on the radio are probably better than all of those bands (or at least put out the best recent record), but they didn't really come up at the same time as interpol, yyys, strokes, walkmen. those guys were like the class of '01 or whatever, like classmates. tv and yyys are friends and all, but tv didn't really have that record to get people pumped until cookie mountain (young liars and desperate youth, awesome as they are, didn't have that effect for them).

with that list i go
yyys
strokes
interpol
walkmen

but you could break it down by live show, which band had the single best record, and so on, but i have a bbq to shop for. and this beer ain't gonna drink itself! carry on...

I nearly had a stroke when I saw so many people ranking The Strokes at #1. Finally realized this was about commercial success, not quality of music.

Why does everyone say The Strokes had so much commercial success? Since when? Maybe in the UK, but those other bands did as well. The YYYs arguably had just as much if not more commercial success than the Strokes

i don't even think anyone considers the walkmen big enough to be a part of the "ny4." if anything, it's the "ny3," with interpol slightly nudging their way towards the top with the relentless promotion for this album. i'd even say that yeah yeah yeahs have been more commercially successful than the strokes.

i'm not saying they're the best, but if all the promotion/talk over our love to admire is indicative of anything, interpol might end up being the biggest new york band for the next few years.

strokes are definitely biggest. no idea who the best is. It's entirely subjective. I'd probably say TVOTR, although I like the strokes better than any of the bands mentioned.

And I'm surprised the walkmen were thrown in there, they're small fries compared to all the others...

personally, i think tv and grizzly bear are the best bands in new york right now, and i agree that it might be because they came later, but perhaps they're too "arty" to be mentioned among the city's biggest bands.

i think the strokes and interpol have been on equal wavelengths as far as being the biggest nyc band, but that says more about interpol, considering that the strokes have been on a major for the lion's share of their career. i do, however, see interpol running laps around the strokes in popularity in the future, unless the latter band's next album suddenly makes them the biggest band in the world.

They probably are playing the bigger, proper MSG: in LA they're playing the Forum which holds at least 15,500. I was expecting the Greek (6,000 capacity). White Stripes have graduated to the Forum too, but last time they toured they did four nights at the Greek. The biggest Interpol (and YYY too actually) have headlined in LA is the Palladium, 3-4,000.

The Strokes are definitely the most talented, biggest, and best of the old New York four. Our practices are tenacious, our work ethic incomparable. That said, we will still have to have a killer 4th album to dethrone Interpol's latest one, as said as that may seem. Where you have gone my Stroke Faithful?

Also, the National and TVOTR are quite good, but they don't really have any claims to us old guns, despite having been around as long.

Good call Scott.

I sincerely hope I have more options to pick from than those 4. I have nothing but apathy for all of them, save Interpol who I feel are generously overrated like whoa. And can I not say that without getting hate? I'd love to discuss why I dislike Interpol rather than just being fucking wrong or something.

I'd take TV on the Radio, if just for Wolf Like Me. I saw the lead singer of The National sprain his ankle and play the 2nd half of his set in agony on Arcade Fire Night 2, so he gets immortal punk rawk props for that number.

This thread illustrates how NYC needs a new band for New Yorkers to carry their flag.

Not that you should give two hoots what we think in Britain, but there's a clear 1-2-3 here, along the lines of:

1. Strokes. Proper huge band. Headlining major festivals. Blanket radio airplay. Shagging proper famous people.

2. Interpol. Very popular cult band. Have just sold out Alexandra Palace, which is as big as anywhere the Strokes have played, but not so well known outside certain circles.

3. YYYs. Respected cult band.

Interpol played the relatively intimate Astoria on Monday -- they're going to have to work on the show (not to mention Daniel Kessler's dancing, which was very odd indeed) to make it work in the enormodromes.

Not to mention the Walkmen's Hamilton Leithauser's voice is the perfect harmony of Bob Dylan and Bono. Very awesome. Not that the other three don't have excellent vocalists. Paul Banks' are damn spine-tingling, Karen O is in a league of her own, and Julian's muffled style is damn cool, even if he dropped it for First Impressions.

It's most certainly MSG proper. In Boston, they're booked to the Agganis, which is a hockey rink at BU that holds ~10-12k for concerts (Dylan played there with the Raconteurs, and the Stripes are playing there this fall).

If they're going double digit k in Boston, they're most assuredly not dialing back to 6k in their home town.

If The White Stripes and Muse can have shows at MSG proper, then in the minds of the bowery presents so should their hometown boys, Interpol.

Everyone is always so hard on the Walkmen and I never understand it. "We've Been Had" is a better indictment of the New York rock scene than anyone here has could come up with (no offense), and Bows + Arrows is an excellent album, on par with "Fever to Tell" at least.

As for this talk of commercial success, it's not exactly fair when the entire garage rock revival fad - which the Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were closely aligned with in the press - had peaked and plummeted long before Interpol even signed to Capitol. They may be making their bid for commercial success now, but that moment has already long passed for the Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and (obviously) the Walkmen.

And for what it's worth....
