Lily Allen Cancels US Tour Stops, Doesn't Blog About It

Of course that's not true. Suppose it would be more newsworthy if in fact she didn't take to MySpace to explain it away, but Lily's apology for canceling most of her May and June dates in the States is right cheeky. Wouldn't expect less. She blogs:

Hey Guys ,
I'm writing to tell you that I have cancelled many of my May and June tour commitments in America . The reason for this , is because my mummy and daddy are very rich , and I have never been in a position where i have actually had to do any hard work before . I thought that being a popstar meant going out getting trashed with famous people and sleeping in all day . The fact that this is not true has come as a huge dissapiontment to me , and as a result I am throwing the towel in .

No but seriously , I have been on tour with this album for a year now , I have fulfilled every commitment up to this point . I am tired , but more than that I don't think I have been giving my best performances recently . I have been getting really drunk because i've been so nervous about doing bad shows , and I don't want people spending money on a going to see a show that isnt the best it could be . I am not falling apart at the seems , I am not suffering with exhaustion , I am not pregnant , and I am not going to rehab . I will be here in America , promoting the album and also starting to write the second album , which I am beyond excited about . The LA and New York shows will still be happening , and I am still playing Coachella and Bonaroo and all the other festivals .

I'd like to apologise to anyone who has bought tickets , but you can get your money back , if you take 'em back to the place you bought them from .

Nice candor, Lil. Doesn't her drinking work to her benefit? Apparently she was hilarious in her boozed-up tirade on Philly at Irving Plaza last week (sorry, we won't be calling it Fillmore just yet).

She's totally preggers isn't she.

UPDATE: The cleaned up, press release-friendly version of Lily's quote (and modified tour dates) after the jump.

"I want to give my best to every audience I play to but, at the same time, I am itching to get back in the studio to start recording these great new songs, to keep things fresh for the audience and for myself," said Lily. "I am not falling apart at the seams, I am not suffering with exhaustion, I am not pregnant, and I am not going to rehab. I will be here in America, promoting the album and also starting to write the second album, which I am beyond excited about."
PR people make everything better.

Lily's less intense tour schedule
04/29 - Indio, CA (Coachella Festival)
05/13 - Seattle, WA @ Everett Events Center (KBKS's "106.1 Girls Night Out")
05/15 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Wiltern
06/01 - Charleston, SC @ Center Stage at The Plex
06/12 - New York, NY @ Roseland Ballroom
06/15 - Manchester, TN @ (Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival)

I was, like, seconds away from buying tickets. It sucks because no one good ever comes to st. louis (not that i blame them).

Damn! I just got my ticket in the mail for the Lawrence Kansas show. What a bunch of crap...sorry you got bored of singing the same songs. What the hell..I'm going to start drinking on my job, when it becomes boring, I'll just quit. Still love her music...just a tad disappointed.

.........she canceled a tour because a leg of her tour because she was TIRED and nervous about performing on stage. Um maybe musician wasn't the best career option then, huh? Not even mentioning her complete lack of talent.

She's really quite a stupid little bitch, isn't she? It's a pity, because I want to like her music, but I'm sure as hell not supporting the career of such a stupid little prat. Even a cute one.

I saw her in Boston last weekend... and she was sober, and said she was trying the whole sober while performing thing for the 3rd time that night. I enjoyed her even though I didn't get to enjoy a tirade. She was visibly a little nervous though.

I don't want to say anything definitive, but when I saw her in Atlanta, she definitely ran off stage during the middle of "Smile" and came back rubbing her nose. Infer what you will.

Oh and Joe. I feel your pain. I used live in St. Louis and no one ever came (excluding DFA 1979, for some reason). At least check out some of the Big Muddy bands like The Vultures and the 7 Shot Screamers. They're decent St. Louis bands.

oh the humourlessness. you kids. she is saying she is a little burned out, and decided to scale back her committments. how is that a surprise, or so maddening?

It will ALWAYS be Irving Plaza to me. The Fillmore East was converted into a bank years ago.

Scott, I don't think it is appropriate to post this story on the day I showed up to work drunk.

Chubby Fetus? That's a different kind of mean right there.

-Elliot

Elliot, it's not Lily Allen's legally-mandated duty to entertain you. Yeah, it's disappointing that she canceled so close to the tour dates, but her rationale isn't inexplicable. And for you to belittle any artist for feeling pressure is curious - after all, I doubt your job is nearly as stressful as hers.

I'm curious - if this had been Ray LaMontagne (notoriously stage-shy and prone to erratic performances), Cat Power (at least, before The Greatest), or Ryan Adams (a genius, but also the biggest asshole in music), would you have the same problem?

It's as if Lily Allen automatically has a knock against her for being from the UK and for a nagging drug habit - when, if you look at Ray, Chan, Ryan, they ALL share similar issues (except it's usually massive-scale alcohol abuse).

That appearance in Everett ("Girls Night Out") is with Hilary Duff, Fergie and Katherine McPhee. Don't know how she ended up on that bill, but I'm looking forward to blogging about that lineup.

As good as some of her songs are, this only seems to confirm my fears that Lily Allen is nothing but a light-weight.

I think in Chan and Ryan's cases, their behaviour can be put down to varying degrees of mental instability (and its not like Ryan Adams doesn't get a hard time for his behaviour), but as the days go by it gets more apparent Lily is really nothing but a spoilt little rich girl.

Although she might be trying to come across as all self depricating, she even points this out herself in her post.

Eric DH,
I am not a musician. I didn't choose to be a touring musician. Therefore the stress levels of my job are entirely irrelevant. High levels of pressure and stress comes with the rock star territory. If you're going to bitch and moan about it and cancel your tour dates, then clearly the rock n' roll lifestyle isn't your best career option.
Also, her drug issues (which i am completely unaware of, not caring enough to keep up on Lily Allen gossip) are a moot point. In fact if she said "I have to take time off because my drug habits are wearing me out" i would find that at least more understandable than "I'm tired and nervous."

Also comparing Lily Allen to Ray LaMontagne or Cat Power is ridiculous. The latter two have actual talent. One of Lily Allen's singles was about hating on her little brother.

Elliot -

No, comparing Lily Allen to Ray LaMontagne and Cat Power is not ridiculous at all! For one, "talent" is in the eye of the beholder. For instance, Cat Power has (traditionally) written inexcessible, complex odes. And, quite frankly, I think they're amazing. But Lily Allen has mastered that ever-elusive art of the catchy pop song.

Quick, hum a few bars of Cat Power's latest single. Hell, hum a few bars of ANY Cat Power single. Now, hum a few bars of "Smile." "LDN." Shit, since you mentioned it, hum a little snippet of "Alfie."

The point being, Lily Allen performs catchy music. I might not like it, but I can't deny that she has a moderate degree of talent - just like Ray or Chan have a moderate degree of talent.

Oh, and speaking of Ray? Listen to Trouble, to When The Sun Turns Black. Those are POP songs! They're about loving and losing and feeling good and feeling bad. And I'm a huge fan. But Lily's singing about MOMENTS - snatches of real life [like the pick-up in the bar in "Knock 'em Out," or struggling with body image "Everything's Just Wonderful. Shit. Even pride for her city in "LDN.] What I'm trying to say is that Ray LaMontagne, while pleasant to listen to, writes infinitely simpler songs than Lily - which seems to fly in the face of defining "pop" music. And talent.

Finally, to address your earlier point: why is it unacceptable for Lily Allen to complain about her job? Yes, I know - she's blessed and lucky to have such a fun, exciting, novel career. But I have friends who LOVE their jobs - be they architects, artists, musicians, lawyers, whatever - and (to the MAN) I have heard them ALL complain about the expectations and limitations their chosen career places on them.

No, not all of them decide to take a week off because of that pressure. But it's significant that they can love their jobs AND complain about certain aspects of those same careers simultaneously.

That just goes to show you how bad the British school system is: she can't even spell "apologize" right!

You folks trashing her are idiots. I'd rather get my money back ahead of time from an artist who knows they are not at the top of their touring game rather than see a truly disappointing show.

If you so desperately need entertainment on demand, go watch TV.

Long Live the TLA indeed. Sniff.

I saw her on April 14th in LA, and i have to say it was a bit of a letdown. Her energy was severely lacking. she was backed by 3 piece bronze, bassist, & dj, but just somehow left me looking for more. Especially high expectations due to cool album.

better luck next time.
