Trackspotting

Lots of good soundtracks this year (Garden State, Wicker Park, Kill Bill: Vol 2, everything Jon Brion did) ... here's a few more to add to the list:

OCEAN'S 12
Despite being stylish and fun to watch, I agree this sequel was too clever for its own good. But David Holmes' soundtrack is even cooler than the previous ones he's compiled for Soderbergh (though I wouldn't have minded a "Claire De Lune" reprise). The DJ's original instrumentals complement a handful of obscure Italian pop and French rock tunes from the '60s and '70s. Like Deck Safari, it's a hip lounge mix from someone with a much larger record collection than yours.
   Ornella Vanoni - "L'Appuntamento"
David Holmes - "7/29/04 The Day Of"

TARNATION
I actually haven't seen this movie yet, but I was intrigued enough by the trailer to check out who did the music. From the Tin Drum Recordings site:

"greetings friends. we've been getting a really nice response to the original music we provided for the feature film TARNATION. many folks have asked if a soundtrack album will be made available, but at the moment there are no plans for a CD release. instead, we've decided to post MP3s of a few of our favorite tracks from the film and trailer. just click on the titles below to download..."
Sweet.
   Max Avery Lichtenstein - "Tarnation"
   Hopewell - "Safe As Milk"
More Tarnation tunes here.

THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU
Bowie songs performed by Seu Jorge? Must be a Wes Anderson movie. Great interview w/ in EW in which the director explains soundtrack selections from his movies:

Bottle Rocket (1996)
"I had [Rolling Stones' '2000 Man' and the Proclaimers' 'Over and Done With'] in my mind for years, back when Owen and I were writing the script in college. Those scenes are written for those songs."

Rushmore (1998)
"At first I wanted it all to be Kinks songs, the whole movie. Then I broadened it out to a whole Brit Invasion soundtrack. It's funny that I only wound up using one Kinks song ['Nothing in This World Can Stop Me Worryin' 'Bout That Girl']. I was listening to that Who song ['A Quick One While He's Away'] in my car and kind of planned the scene out, editing it all in my head. I was like, 'Okay, you have twelve seconds to come down the steps, get your shoelaces, and walk through here.' It was all choreographed to the music. That one was hard."

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
For the opening sequence, Anderson wanted "Hey Jude." "The timing was bad. George Harrison was dying and we just couldn't get the stuff cleared. [Nico's] 'These Days' was the first thing I had, before I had a sense what the movie was about. I just knew I was going to play that song and somebody was going to be walking. I didn't know who, but that song gave me an extraordinary visual."

The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (2004)
Anderson shot half the movie before realizing that Brazilian actor Seu Jorge, who functions as the movie's onboard Greek-chorus-of-one and sings bossa nova reinterpretations of Bowie songs throughout the film, was ditching Bowie's lyrics in favor of his own off-the-cuff musings. "I guess the idea wasn't effectively communicated to him that he was to sing translated lyrics of Bowie songs. My original plan was to make it all electronic and like a Radiohead feeling. That would have been a lot more simple."

And good news: we're gonna do a Life Aquatic-themed sweepstakes.

Ansen's list in Newsweek was missing Eternal Sunshine, so I'm not sure I can listen to anything else he says. Possibly ever.

Scott: The one song left off the O12 soundtrack was the one where Toulour goes thru the beams at the museum. After some research, I found out it's "The A La Menthe" by Nikkfurie of The Cautions. Anyway you can get a link for it? I've tried all other channels and can't seem to find it....otherwise I agree with you in that it's a great soundtrack.

I just saw the Newsweek list and out of that list I have seen three movies.

I have seen Osama, Bad Education and The Harry Potter Movie

Both Osama and Bad Education are on my top ten list for this year.

Osama, was very well done and very disturbing and moving all at the sametime.

I'm huge fan of both Amadolvar and the very hot Gael Garcia Bernal. I thought that Bad Education was really well done and I'm so glad that Gael Garcia Bernal is still taking ballsy rolls such as in this movie and has yet to make and hopefully never make sell out and make any Titanicesque movies ala Leo!

I'm dying to see Sideways, I think Paul Giamotti is just amazing I really hope that he gets his Oscar nod this year!

I'm kinda curious to see the Howard Hughes flick. Kate Beckensdale as Ava Gardner is just sooooo wrong! I just read a bio on Hughes and the person that I could see doing the part more so then Leo and I read that he was considered was Jim Carrey. Leo to me seems as if he is too much of a pretty boy for the part.

To add to my post I saw Closer last night as well and all I can say is that thank god I didn't see it here in NYC and waste $10.25! Although I thought Natalie Portman was really amazing.

Yeah I'm suprised that Napoleon Dynamite didn't get at least one nomination at this years Golden Globes its on my top ten for this year.

It would be great if the Oscars nominated it for something...but I doubt that.

The "Tarnation" soundtrack is actually pretty amazing. He uses the music to fantastic effect in the actual film (which is great, and pretty powerful). The most amazing thing is that he got to use any of the songs at all. He made the film using iMovie for a little over $200, but then he got Gus Van Sant and John Cameron Mitchell involved, and they helped him get, and pay for, the licensing rights which must have been ridiculous. Good thing, though, because without the songs, it would be a completely different (and probably unwatchable) film.

I was just reading on the IMDB the trivia about the Aviator and Gwenyth Paltrow was signed on to play Ava Gardner originally....I love Gwenyth I think she is a great actress but she too would have been all wrong for that part.

Wondering if Monica Belluci could master a southern accent cause she is who would be the ideal to play Ava Gardner.

Catherine Zeta Jones or Sharon Stone with a dark wig would have made for a far better Ava Gardner then Kate Beckensdale.

Anyway speaking of Scorse I always liked the way that he used music to get across feeling in a certain scene. One of my favorite scenes is from Goodfellows when a coked up Ray Liotta is being followed by the police helicopter in the car and he has play the live version of the Who's Magic Bus.

kate beckinsale is a definite miscast. i second the catherine zeta-jones call. but even she might seem a bit out of place next to leo dicaprio. if they just changed her hair jennifer garner might have been a good choice and she can hold her own next to dicaprio (catch me if you can).

why is kate beckinsale still getting jobs anyway? sure, she's pretty but seriously, the wooden acting... pearl harbor? serendipity? underworld? fucking...van helsing?!

i don't know why i keep going to her movies. :/ and i know i will probabably go see the aviator too because it's, ya know, scorsese.

One of my all time favorite soundtracks is the soundtrack to Hedwig and the Angry inch. I just love the varried styles of each song from country to punk to a power balad to 60's pop.
