Trent Gets Math, Mashed

The Big-banged, Cash-covering (?) Spin coverboy is answering fan questions at NIN.com. Here's a winner:

Actually, some of the Q&A is enlightening. Regarding the lack of booklet with the new CD, Trent explains:

CDs are dead. CDs are also an ugly, aesthetically unpleasant means of delivering data ... When the time came to design the package for the With Teeth, I was unhappy with the limited "practical" choices available with the physical package. I also felt that it was unfair to those that purchased the music online. I wanted an experience that felt appropriate for the music and design. One that had an element of discovery to it and one that also said "fuck you" to aging and outdated convention. (When's the last time you were really impressed with a CD package, honestly?)
Read his whole response here.

You can still stream With Teeth album here and if you're feeling adventurous download the 70MB multi-track audio session (.sit) for "The Hand That Feeds." If you've got GarageBand, you can make cool remixes like these:

  • TimG - "Bloc Of Nails (NIN Vs Bloc Party)" (MP3)
  • Team 9 - "Love Theme Hand Dance (NIN Vs Flashdance Theme)" (MP3)
  • DJ Tripp - "The Time That Feeds (NIN Vs Benny Benassi)" (MP3)
  • Nathan Chase - "The Ghost That Feeds (NIN Vs Ray Parker Jr.)" (MP3)
  • Nathan Chase - "Toxic Trent (NIN Vs Britney)" (MP3)

Johnny Cash's cover of Reznor's 'hurt' is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Cash brings a whole different meaning to the song...

And hey...what could be a bigger honor than having the original rock start cover your most personal song?

    Love.live.Trent.

Trent's logic is all sorts of fucked up. Instead of going the extra mile and maybe doing something to make his CD packaging stand out he basically says "fuck it" and cops out.

We'll see how "dead" CDs are when he "moves" a quarter-million "units" this week.

He really doesn't need so many steps to solve that problem. How aesthetically unpleasant.

Further proof that Monsieur Reznor is a dickhead and hates his fans. "Hmm... think of the money I'll save without the cd booklet..." Money hungry gobshite hasn't put out a decent record in years.

    Fred - ignant muvver fukker...

You think Trent gives a feck about cash? He already has five multi-platinum (UK, US & Euro) lps under his belt. If he did he'd release mediocre albums every two years and have had a best of ten years ago.

True, he hasn't put a good record out in years. Bu that's becuase he hasn;t put a record out in years. Until now.

And actually at the risk of sounding like a total cnut, I interviewed Reznor for a UK website and he said two things. He loves the fact that he has fans that keep him in cash, and that he can touch other people even if his songs are v personal, but that because of the last comment, his fans are a total nightmare: depressed, teenagers who write poetry and read Edgar Allen Poe and think they'll probably kill themselves and plan which NIN songs to have played at their funeral....

Not Motley Crue really is it. I think Trent takes more flack than he deserves, he's just a private fallible and flawed guy who's a little too human for the rock star role he has reluctantly stepped into...

Well i remember the Sin single (maxi?) athat had some nice artwork. Maybe if he gave a shit.

Once you go beyond the jewelbox. Remember in the early 90's when they got rid of the longboxes and all of a sudden packaging got creative for 5 minutes?

Or try Coudal's Jewelboxing (google it) for some interesting and creative work done on jewelboxes.
