Truth Doesn't Make A Noise- it Blogs!

Via Best Week Ever, via Ms. Modern Age, Jack White pokes bloggers, Spin, Pitchfork, VH1, indie labels, and failed stand-up comedians in one long post:

The internet blogger. All of twelve, with not much knowledge of the power of the written word. It's tricky, words can kill.
[...]
What a funny album, coming from divided critics to supposed disappointing sales, to going platinum in several countries, to making most critics top ten lists, to winning a Grammy. That’s funny, right? When that happens pitchfork has to call spin to confer on whether to ignore or make fun of it. They lose perspective, the sewer worker below their lower east side Manhattan hipster bar out smarts them every time.
[...]
Now those printied opinions are probably coming from the person sitting next to you on his laptop at the mall. Why should you care about their opinion? Why shouldn’t you? Who are all those people on vh1 trashing everyone? Why does a failed stand up comedian have the final word on the rubik’s cube?
[...]
"Indie" isn't a word handed down from God. You can't bless yourself with that word, you can't immerse yourself in the idea of indie and expect to be exempt from all contempt, artistic criticism, and "selling out". It doesn't make your art pure just because you have knighted yourself "anti-pop". For example, most indie record labels rip off bands WAY more than major labels, you know why? Because they can get away with it.
True. Look what happened to Hot Topic when they went indie. But no way is VH1 giving you the last word on the Rubic's Cube- just wait for Totally Awesome Failed Comedians.

Then, jimmy, go somewhere else. Since you're so much smarter than the rest us you surely understand that blogs give us what THEY want to and we respond with our clicks. That's the nature of this relationship, you deep genius, you. I'm not saying there's no room for dialog about the content they've chosen; it just seems snotty and lowbrow to criticise the choice of content.

Haven't you seen the news coverage? Are you unaware of what a blog is? Are you one of those people that talk to the characters on TV and in the movies (Don't open the door)?

To be considered an independent thinker, you have to prove that you've thought. Your comments are analogous to going to a Whole Foods and complaining that some of what they sell is ice cream. Stick to the produce aisle, buddy.

And "what happen to you stereogum?" (sic)... I've been avoiding work via this site for years now, the celebrity coverage is, if anything, less prominent.

Sorry for the length, pet peeve.

I'm mad that Scott didn't thank me for linking the Gang of Four Karate Kid track.

Where is this all heading? I'm saturated with information, pictures, videos. Stereogum definately keeps me coming back for more, but i find its the more offbeat stuff rather than the current big story that gives me satisfaction. Every blog's job is getting harder. i mean, shit, youtube, myspace, and flickr give every person god like amounts of networking, bandwith, storage . . . how long before everything splinters off in to a billion tiny fragments? How long before all of this shit eats itself? It is no doubt about CONTENT. Good luck keeping it up. The Karate Kid thing was one of the best scoops you've had in awhile. So out in the open for anyone to see, yet no one saw to write about it. Check out the Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack for a GoBetweens song, i think it was "Spring Rain."

Mark - Does it ease the sting if I say 'thank you'? :) Thank you.

3 bill d GREAT rebutal no slander just a good worded opinion

I agree with Jack. The opinions of failed stand-up comedians regarding trash culture doesn't make for particularly compelling television. However, the opinions of Associate Editors of shitty magazines and former Reality TV participants - THAT IS PURE TELEVISUAL GOLD.

Well, that was a terrible Jack White impression, jimmy. But it's too bad I lost on the internet. I'm totally wrong, because the other post was so funny the humor wasn't visible. I happen to agree with everthing Jack said (i.e. Think for yourself, don't even let Jack White tell you what to think.) Since yours was a poorly executed parody, this doesn't apply completely to the situation but I still hate it when people post a comment along the lines of, "you can't post this and you can't post that." Blogs aren't requst shows.

Some kind of Wonderful Soundtrack - I remember seeing the Go Betweens "Spring Rain" in the music credits, but i guess it didn't make it onto the soundtrack, or i'm trippin'. Otherwise, Indie as a subculture annoys me. If you can look at someone and know what music they listent to, well i think that's gay and they suck. Anyone who owns it, blows. tattoos suck too, not that has much to do with anything, i thought i'd let you know. fu.

I'd like to ask Jack White and anyone else that has an idea... what it takes to be a great music blogger?

Why do I care? Because my new internet radio station is in need of some serious help! My obsession/addiction/therapy is to editorally support new music that deserves to be heard. Crazy idea, I know.

I'm looking to pay money for reviews and interviews if I can find the talent. My other (unrelated) site is doing really well so I can funnel some funds to content writers. If good music writers aren't available, then I think it will be important for music blogs to provide a request feature with voter feedback, but then that puts us back into the "follow the herd" mentality.

Check out the new skid on the dock... Electrobus.com/radio1.html

128k - World pop alternative mix - it's over the frick'n map... but at least it's legal!

"I can't listen to that stuff. They don't have a good sound...Jack's half into the sound and music, but then he wants to be a pop star as well, so you've got a big problem."

That's what Billy Childish said about The White Stripes. I'm not sure if that's all he said, but if it is I think Jack went a bit overboard in dissing him.
