Tuesday's Showcase Showdown

CMJ is so on -- and forethought is so rewarded. Unlike the close quarters of SXSW, there's no Sixth Street-styled centerpoint (Ludlow's Pianos and Living Room -- with Arlene's and Rockwood nearby -- are as close to a cluster as you'll get). Plus, venues fill up and shut doors. So you gotta plan, and you gotta commit. But the choices aren't always easy! Here's your chance to sound off on the merits of tonight's competing showcases.

First up, there's Bowery Ballroom, playing host to The Rapture (11PM), Sydney's The Presets (10PM), and Holy Hail (9PM). This one's all about wearing your punk-funk dancing shoes, and The Rapture and the electro-loving Presets never disappoint. Meanwhile, Knitting Factory has The Cardigans (8:50PM) and IV Thieves (11PM), and we're thinking Nina's a must see. And over at Sin-E, the Interpol-esque post-punk of Heavens (11PM) join Ima Robot (8PM) and Young Love (10PM). But definitely don't forget the Flavorpill's Halloween Party at a secret location from 8PM-2AM. This one's got Spank Rock, CSS, and Louie Vega, among others.

Heads spinning? Ours are! Let us know which one you're hitting (or would hit). It's too early in the week for us to make these sorts of decisions.

Way too many choices. If I could be two places at once . . . Dragons of Zynth at Delancey and Hot IQs at Midway.

Just got back from the Cardigans show. The Format was seriously disappointing, but surprise guest Matt Nathanson was terrific.

And Nina and Peter were brilliant. Absolutely charming and witty, and they had the audience in their hands. Best songs were two they claimed they've never done live before: Couldn't Care Less and the encore, an incredibly emotional version of Overload.

Acoustic Cardigans was excellent. Nina is so hot!

Agreed that the Format was a disappointment. Why waste a short set with a cover of "Ape Man"?

But the Card(igan)s were great. Nina's voice has just gotten better.

Full review over my way.

I'm all about hanging in Park Slope tonight. Earlimart, Foundry Field Recordings, Frida Hyvonen, at Union Hall and Steve Earle, Laura Cantrell, Tim Easton at Southpaw. If they could add a couple more venues, it COULD be SXSW!
