Tunde Adebimpe Covers Neil Young
Death Cab For Cutie are heading on tour with Neil Young, and here's TV On The Radio's beardless singer Tunde Adebimpe covering the man's "Unknown Legend." Tunde's cover comes from Jonathan Demme's Rachel Getting Married, which as we mentioned, stars a smiling Adebimpe. The spare, lonesome take on the Harvest Moon song's less cheerful, running in sharp contrast to the more mile-a-minute energy of TV On The Radio's current Dear Science focus "Dancing Choose." Pretty stuff. "She used to work in a diner / Never saw a woman look finer / I used to order just to watch her float across the floor..."

To get the setting: In the movie, Tunde, who plays the groom marrying Rosemarie DeWitt (aka Rachel), supposedly forgoes wedding vows and instead sings the above. Kleenex, please.

Not bad. This is one of my favorite Neil songs. A bit karaoke sounding by itself, but I could see it being powerful if used properly in the film. Knowing Demme's use of music, I have no doubt that it is.

Caught this movie last weekend and LOVED it. Demme's use soundtrack was powerfully done, indeed, and Adebimpe's "cover" of Neil Young was very touching. A beautiful and extremely moving film. HIGHLY recommend it.

Hey, I just watched Tunde in a movie on PBS. He was great in it. "Jump Tomorrow" I think it was called? Anyway, good movie, good band. And I usually hate when musicians and actors crossbreed or whatnot.
Funny that he's once again sporting the short-haired look at the same time. I wouldn't have recognized him in the movie if I hadn't known what he looked like with his locks cropped.

I would tend to agree with you re: actor/musician cross-overs. He was great in this film, too. I never really got into TVOTR, so I had no idea who he was until after the fact. (I was, however, VERY excited to see both Fab 5 Freddy and Robin Hitchcock also in the film.)
I've also never really liked Anne Hathaway for some reason, but even she was great. Well cast all around.

Leonard Maltin tried to get me to see this movie, but it sounded lame. Had he mentioned something along the lines of Tunde singing Neil Young, it would've made it seem like a different movie. Way to make every movie you review sound like the same talky, indie, documentary-style fiction film. Bad Critic!

And as far as the film is concerned... I'm a cynical bastard, and couldn't help but be caught up in the magical weekend of the movie. It deserves to find an audience.
