Tweedy Talks Sky Blue Sky In Nashville

Stereogum reader Aaron B. caught Jeff's show in Tennessee last night and was good enough to give us the rundown on the set, including Tweedy's drunk-fan handling and the title and release date for the new Wilco record. He writes:

Jeff Tweedy played a solo show last night at the James K Polk theatre in Nashville. It was a great show, despite some drunk redneck asswipe who belligerently shouted Golden Smog song requests at every opportunity (including during songs). Jeff handled the bastard pretty well, though -- a little confrontational, somewhat gracious for his idiotic enthusiasm, and later shutting him down completely to the rest of the audience's relief (after some initial awkwardness).

At any rate, during one lengthy banter session, Jeff asked if we had any questions for him. Most of the shouts were ridiculous ("Will you do me a favor and call my sister?" "Umm, that's a little above and beyond, man."), but some enterprising young hipster took the opportunity to ask about the new Wilco record.

Straight from the horses mouth, the new Wilco record is set for release on May 19th [Editor's Note: Aaron wrote again, correcting that to May 15th] and is titled Sky Blue Sky. Jeff brought out Glenn later in the show to play drums on the title track, which was a pretty standard little folk ballad set to a marching-style drum pattern.

Good of Jeff not to fight with anyone on stage like the last time there was an unruly crowdgoer. Whip out a pencil and mark yer calendar for Sky Blue Sky. Just in time to introduce to the Coachellapaloozaroo audiences.

Looks like I'll be giving myself an early birthday present on 5/15. I'm excited! I've been looking forward to this album for a very long time.

That's probably the most perfect title for a Wilco record I could have imagined. Summer sounds so far away now...

Jeff joked about the whole fan-punching incident -- even reenacting his moves, challenging drunken-Golden-Smog guy to a fight, and declaring that he "vanquished" that guy on YouTube. Pretty funny.

Other highlight: Jeff introducing a game in which the audience was to think of band names and then consider the bowel movement that inspired them. Pretty childish, but hilarious nonetheless -- the audience embraced the game completely, shouting their suggestions back at him. My favorites: Vanilla Fudge; Uriah Heal; Blood, Sweat, and Tears.

Looking forward to the new record, although from what I've heard I don't buy his early claim of it being a record you could "dance to." I suppose you could slow dance to the title track he played for us, but its no "Lady in Red."

While a lot of the new songs I've heard so far sound "traditional" (for lack of a better word), the difference between his solo stuff and the studio versions is often substantial - look at early/solo versions of "Spiders" and compare it to the overblown studio version, or even comparing "Not For the Season" with its ultimate appearance as Loose Fur's "Laminated Cat"

I guess what I'm saying is that different arrangements for the album wouldn't surprise me.

Out of curiosity, I wonder which indie-rock group has the most obnoxious fans. I've seen a lot of drunk and ill-mannered people in my concert-going days, but for me the most shining examples of low-life behavior has always been at a ryan adams show...and im not talking about ryan himself. Anyone have any input?

Pitchfork says the album will be called "Blue Sky Blue" -- who's correct?

I'm not ashamed to say I could have reversed it in my sleep over the night, but Pitchfork confirmed it with the band's publicist as Sky Blue Sky.

Maybe its reversible, like Fables of the Reconstruction / Reconstruction of the Fables.

Its a little to close to "Blue Sky Blues" by Ryan Adams. I liked Sky Blue Sky.

jeff has said that this album is wilco strangest as it is not experimental at all i think it is going to be intresting to see how Nels Cline adds to the songs as he was not on a ghost is born , i am personaly not a fan of guitar solos but when it comes to wilco i am always open minded, this alsos seems like a very importat record in terms of wilcos legacy i mean they can either establish themselves alongside radiohead and pavement as the most important and consistent bands of a generation or become the grateful dead.
