VH1's 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs

thumbnail icon: VH1's 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs

Not everyone (anyone) agreed with VH1's 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs. Let's see what happens when they talk about folks with guitars. Before we dig in, though, it's helpful to understand what they've counted as "hard rock," so keep in mind that the five-part television version was hosted by Bret Michaels and that Winger, along with Skid Row, Scorpions, Ratt, and, of course, Poison made the list. Mr. Sean

My dad is currently searching for a corner to die in after seeing Evanescence beat out Jethro Tull.
Seriously, guys?
In VH1s defense, this was voted on by the viewers. So shame on us?

Not exactly. This is VH1 staff's list- they don't leave countdowns like this in the hands of viewers (if for no other reason than label politics), but ask for "help" on the website to make it seem populist

They should not have chosen Runt o the Hills by Iron Maiden, it is no where near their best song, they have sooo many great that destroy Run to the Hills. Also who ever voted for Welcome to the Jungle to be number one needs to be hit in the face with a shovel. Also why the fuck did Megadeth only get 51 on the list? They destroy most of the bands on this list. And then there is the fact that they chose Enter Sandman, i mean, Rock Band much? Back in Black or one of the many greats by Zeppelin should have been number 1.

Too right mate, Megadeth owns most of this list, along with what you listed, Guns N' Roses is a bunch of shit they don't have anywhere near the longevity of Megadeth, AC/DC, or Led Zeppelin, they suck.

Most of these list suck. Welcome to the jungle number 1? they can go F()@K themselves. And why aren't' there any songs by queens of the stone age, and why is megadeth 51, and why is acdc # 2? that band deserves a 99 sort of place on this list!!!

It's a hard rock list, not a heavy/thrash/speed/power metal list.

So Maiden, Metallica and Megadeth have nothing to do here.

Word, except I'm ODing on heroin in my corner. This is the kind of crap I've come to expect from VH1, MTV, Rolling Stone and so forth. I love and adore Hendrix but "Hey Joe" is NOT a hard rock song. Purple haze would have been a better choice, if any.

The beatles rock harder then half the people on the list. wtf. Helter SKelter, one of the hardest songs of its time. cant believe sunshine was so like not in the top 20 at least.

I liked the show. But why anyone gets angry at these lists is beyond me. I guess they only do it because they want something to be angry at. I agree some of the songs weren't even close to hard rock but people have to grow up and accept these lists for what they are. I mean come on. There are so many different people out there that like different kinds of music and believe some bands deserve to be on it more than others and believe that this song should be #1 over this song etc... There's no way in hell to please everybody. Could they have made a better list? Absolutely but it's all for entertainment value. People find what they believe is a huge mistake in a list that's so wide open because everyone has different viewpoints on different bands and different kinds of music, and then they complain about it. And someone who believes that some band being left out of the list is a tragedy may not be agreed upon by everyone. To sum it up all I'm saying is that you have to accept it for what it is and take it with a grain of salt.

FOR MANY REASONS!
Megadeth is at 51... why they should be 20 or lower... they kill most bands on this list
why is Nirvana num 7.. there a good band but they do not deserve that rank...

Enter sandman is a mediocore song... metallica has way better songs... they could have picked anything from kill em all, justice, lighting, n puppets but no fucking main stream media have 2 ruin it all....

i cant even believe marilyn manson made it on this list... he sucks... really

i am also certainly disgusted how bands like greenday, twisted sister, and iron butterfly made higher ranks then MEGADETH, and anthrax

this is really one of the worst music lists ive ever seen gj VH1 u idiots

Alternately brainless and interesting. For instance, I didn't expect Motorhead on the list at all, let alone in the top ten. Way to go, VH1! Oh, uh Give It Away? Boooo on you, VH1!

Nice to see: Faith No More, MC5, The Stooges (wrong song), "Mountain Song." "Would?", "Cult of Personality"
Curious inclusions: "Hey Joe" (over voodoo chile and countless others???), Blitzkrieg Bop", "Black Hole Sun", "Interstate love song", Green Day
Shame on you!: Bon Jovi, Creed, Sammy Hagar, Buckcherry, "Free Bird", The Final Fucking Countdown??!?!?!??

In sum, it seems like they had no real criteria for what "hard rock" means, and also didn't do a very good job of choosing the songs, but some people at least had some interesting ideas.

Please don't get too upset at this list. It's like an e-mail from your grandma listing her 100 favorite LOL Cats. Far too late to the game, she just doesn't understand the medium, technology, or continence. It's adorable, quaint, and a little depressing.

My brother and I were sure "Iron Man" was going to be number one. We were even both betting that it would win, so if we lost we would just burn out money. We didn't actually burn our money, but we're still pissed/shocked. I mean, "Welcome To The Jungle" is a great song, but I would never say it completely embodies the soul of hard rock. Give me a break, VH1.

A few stray observations:
-I, like many here, am cofused as to what constitutes hard rock. Since when is White Stripes, Nirvana, and Smashing Pumpkins hard rock?
-Evanescence has no place on this list or any list that contains the words "Best" or "Top". Amy Lee is just a poor man's Amanda Palmer.
-Do The Donnas even make records anymore? Or do they just profesionally appear on VH1 list and I Love the.. shows?

Very safe list. Calling 90% of these songs "Hard Rock" is a misnomer (if such a genre even exists), unless that qualification means having long hair and at some point a member of your band shot heroin into their dick.

People questioning how they made this list obviously don't watch a lot of VH1 (That would be a compliment). This is VH1's rules for making these types of lists:

1) "Hard Rock" is defined as every piece of guitar-based music that wouldn't fall under the category of "Soft Rock", which by VH1's definition, means Phil Collins and everyone who could draw comparisons to Phil Collins.
2) Recognizable to the average VH1 viewer (meaning either a Top 10 hit or a piece of music that is frequently used as a pop culture reference joke on one of the other VH1 programs)
3) A large chunk of which must come from the 80s, particularly Hair Metal because VH1 refuses to give up the notion that the 80s weren't both awesome and hilarious, no matter how much evidence to the contrary (The Horribleness of the 80s is to a VH1 viewer what evolution is to a Creationist).

Under these rules, this list makes perfect sense.

Hey it's my impression of Bret Michaels on the countdown show:
"That song ripped my head off and devoured its innards, and I just might have pissed my pants. You're gonna love this song, it's some kick-ass in-your-face kick-ass straight-up rockin' kick-ass rock 'n' roll. Check it out." *awkward swaying* *anxious stare*

No surprise with the list quality. Overall, just plain sucky. But I mean admit it, almost all of us find watching these countdowns to be guilty pleasures. Until you reflect upon it and realize that you just wasted 5 hours of your time. Just be thankful "Through the Fire and Flames" wasn't #1. I almost expected it.

These lists always have htis & misses. this one proves the point. Welcome to the Jungle # 1??? Please! Ok to include on the list but # 1?
And they got the wrong Hendrix song- by far. At least they got in Sabbath, the Who and Deep Purple.
But Poison # 40? Buckcherry included? Well, I guess it had to be so- given who made the list. The Final Countdown makes the list but Cheap Trick's Surrender doesn't ? Hello?
Lots to argue about but what the hell, it's just a list.

VH1 has been trying to bring back hair metal for years now. With the Metal Years documentary and by punishing stupid whores by making them compete for Brett Michaels TV boner. The format is.. 5-8 shit bands.. someone legitimate to make you keep watching.. thinking it will get better. The criterion for Hard Rock is obviously.. from the collective will of Rednecks from my small town watering hole. In a world where "Talk Dirty to Me" is considered to be more rocking than "Search & Destroy" Do you know where you are?..you're in the jungle baby.. you're gonna die!

"Hey Joe" is a good Hendrix song but not his greatest. "Machine Gun" is the real bomb and the guitar solo is one of the best of all time. The radio didn't play this track often as it is about twelve minutes long. any rocker thats worth his or her salt knows that this is one of the finest guitar driven pieces of its time.

Not bad for a Vh1 list, but of all the ZZ Top songs to pick, why pick Tush? There's always Sharp dressed man or one of those other great songs with great videos.
Evanescance blows more than a porn star, as does Green Day, and it would be great if Vh1 would come out and finaly admit that they don't put legitimate songs on in order to give other bands a chance, because there are at least 10 songs I would put on this from Ac/Dc, Zeppelin, Hendrix, and Van Halen (No way in hell Running with the devil is their best song, not even the best off the album)

HELLOOOOO even I the 50s and 60s pop and psychedelic and folky stuff lover knows that one! The entire list just reminded me of stuff my aunt listened to when she was in her late teens and 20s... so pretty much 80s hair bands.... and I'm sorry... Bret Michaels?? Anyone seen the slutty whores on his bus? Thought his first and second crews were bad, this takes the CAKE! This list was bogus... i mean honestly. if it's supposed to be a list about HARD ROCK songs... maybe they should limit it to HARD ROCK songs?!?!? many bands on the list are in no way hard rock. Nirvana(grunge) Bon Jovi(pop/rock) Maylin Manson(metal) Iron Maidden(metal) Jimmi Hendrix's 'Hey Joe" is blues ZZ Top could be considered country Evanescance is goth metal Green Day is punk Black Hole Sun is in general an odd song Van Halen is glam rock Buckcherry just sux Quiet Riot was a cover of an original hard rock song and Poison is also metal. Metal and hard rock are two diffrent genres and should not be on the same list. Plus (no offense to fans) a lot of the older songs can't really be put in the same catagory. their just rock. They can't compare to songs like "Back In Black" or "Crazy train". And Where The Fuck is PINK FLOYD?????? one of the greatest bands int the world and they don't make the list??? "Won't Get fooled Again" should have made top 5 and if we're talking GREATEST HARD ROCK SONG of all time.... like it or not it should be Deep Purple's "Smoke On Water". if only because it has the greatest rift and its so good that everyone knows it from birth. this list was crap and i think they should have another one where REAL PEOPLE vote... not the assholes who work for VH1 and appaently have know idea what hard rock is and what a bands best song is.

First off...many of y'all are retarded. "Hard Rock" encompasses ANYTHING HARD!!! This includes punk, metal, grunge, etc....

Second, this list is total bullshit because it seems as no band was allowed to have more than one or at the absolute most 2 songs...(Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Who, and Van Halen). I can think of more songs from each of those bacnds that are better than Creed, Evenescence, the White Stripes, W.A.S.P. and Night Ranger.

How about "Thunderstruck" (AC/DC) - "Black Dog" (Led Zeppelin) - "Jamie's Cryin" (Van Halen) - "Master of Puppets" (Metallica) - "Purple Haze" (Jimi Hendrix) - "Man in the Box" (Alice in Chains) - "Foreplay/Longtime" (Boston)...I could go on forever. All of these songs should have been included but weren't because a band can apparently only have one song...

Now how about the bands that didn't even make the list??? How about "Cowboys from Hell" (Pantera) - "Mississippi Queen" (Mountain) - "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" (Rick Derringer)....

Unbelievable and unacceptable on VH1's part...they can all suck one.

On a brighter note it was nice to see "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly. But it shouldn't have been 24th....

Eh, well, after looking at all of the horrendously shitty lists of Rolling Stone, this list is not nearly as bad. But, it sounds like everybody hates this list and I honestly give it a C+. Of course, there are some bands that are PURELY Hard Rock (AC/DC is probably the all-powerful God of it) but a list of just a few bands with several songs would get boring...trust me. And, many of you are confusing "best hard rock" songs with "best songs". These are, in VH1's opinion, the best "hard rock songs". In no way does it mean that Buckcherry is a better band than Pink Floyd. And, another thing is that we all have biases before hand anyway. If this list was up to me, I would choose a bunch of Queen songs considering they're my favorite band and I know nearly everyone of their songs. But that doesn't mean that everybody else knows all of their songs. This list was made for the average human being that would at least recognize most of the songs. Welcome to the Jungle is a better "hard rock" song than Sweet Child o' Mine even though I like the latter more. Putting it first is VH1's choice and if you have a problem with it, make your own list and have people bitch at it saying there's not enough of their favorite band and too much of a genre that they hate. Before I watched this program I didn't even know that Hard Rock was considered an actual genre (I still don't think it's an actual one) but just a combination of what's in the list (classic rock, metal, punk, grunge, shit [Buckcherry]).

Where's the Sex Pistols? Where's NIN?" Uh, Pantera is metal morons...Sex Pistols are punk, duh...and NIN is not hard rock...They are kind of a mix between industrial and rock, but not hard rock...Anyway, I did not expect Welcome to the Jungle to win at all..I mean, I love GnR and all, but even I was kind of miffed at it reaching the top spot...There were so many other better songs..

I really do feel this was basically a Rock Band/Guitar Hero list to appeal to the masses who don't understand rock music as a whole. There were a lot of great songs on the list that changed the face of music, but there were also many that didn't belong. I just chalked it up to the fact that this was a list made by people that don't fully understand and the list I would have made would have been much better, but still a lot of you wouldn't like my list either because everyone has different tastes in music and ideas about what hard rock is. It's still fun to agree with some of the songs and disagree terribly with others, but in the end VH1 will never make a perfect list because they're too mainstream a lot of the time and their countdowns don't represent what America actually thinks. Also, the list wouldn't be as interesting if the hardest rockers had all of their songs represented, it's cool to have 80 or 90 some different artists/bands on the list even if one doesn't agree with them all.

"Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground", "fell in love with a girl", those are songs I "bang my head" with more. "Everlong"" Is this the same "Everlong" I have heard? that slow song? hardly hard rock. "Hey Joe?", its got great guitar licks but I'ts not hard rock! "Manic Depression", "Fire", any other hendrix song would have been fine but hey joe, "hey joe" belongs in the "100 best rock solos ever" list.

I might as well add one more theory as to how VH1 decided the list!
i think they thought about it for all of about 38 seconds, then decided it was going to be too hard, so they wrote down a bunch of songs, each on it's own paper plate, pasted them to a wall, got plastered and threw darts to pick the order. i mean that's the only way this list would make sense to me.

NEXT HOW COME ALL THE GOOD BANDS ONLY HAVE 2 SONGS IN THE COUNTDOWN?!?!?! THIS IS GREATEST HARD ROCK SONGS NOT THE HEY LETS BE FAIR COUNTDOWN AND GIVE EVERYBODY A CHANCE.... THATS BULL... LED ZEPPELIN SHOULD HAVE 4 OR 5, AC/DC SHOULD HAVE 6-7, VAN HALEN SHOULD HAVE 4-5, METALLICA SHOULD HAVE 5-6, PEARL JAM COULD HAVE A FEW AND FREE BIRD SHOULD AT LEAST BE IN THE TOP TEN..... FOREPLAY/LONG TIME IS A HARDER SONG THAN MORE THAN A FEELING BUT I THINK BOTH SHOULD BE ON THE LIST...

ALL THE SONGS THAT SHOULDNT EVEN BE IN THIS COUNTDOWN
GGGGRRRRREEEEENNNNN DDDDDAAAAAYYYYYY SHOULDNT BE ON THIS COUNTDOWN, NEITHER SHOULD JOAN JETT OR CHERRY BOMB,..... KICK OUT THE JAMS??? WTH IS THAT IVE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF IT!!! AND HOW IS KID ROCK RANKED OVER OTHER CLASSIC SONGS??? PHOTOGRAPH BY DEF LEPPARD SHOULDNT BE UP THAT HIGH AND HEY JOE SHOULDNT EITHER IT SHOULD BE ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER AND PURPLE HAZE OR FIRE OR SOMETHING IN THIS... AND EVANESCENCE SHOULD BE UP IN THE 700S WITH GREEN DAY

I SORTOF AGREE WITH WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE AT THE TOP BUT THERE ARE DEFINITELY HARDER SONGS THAN THAT LIKE MASTER OF PUPPETS I THINK SHOULD DEFINITELY BE ON HERE AND MAYBE AT #1, BACK IN BLACK COULD BE #1,WHOLE LOTTA LOVE SHOULD PROBABLY BE DOWN CUZ ITS NOT THAT HARD AND MEGADETH OR MAIDEN OR SOMETHING SHOULD BE THERE... NIRVANA SHOULD BE 10-30.... RUNNIN WITH THE DEVIL AND HOT FOR TEACHER SHOULD BE SWITCHED... YOU GOT ANOTHER THING COMIN SHOULD BE UP THERE TOO...

SONGS THAT COULD BE #1
MASTER OF PUPPETS
FREE BIRD
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IRON MAN
BACK IN BLACK
HOT FOR TEACHER

OTHER BANDS THAT COULDVE HAD MORE SONGS
TED NUGENT
GUNS N ROSES
SABBATH
QUIET RIOT
JUDAS PRIEST
BOSTON
JIMI HENDRIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREATEST GUITARIST EVER?!?!?!? HELLO?!?!?!?!

I agree. These countdowns are really nothing but songs put on guitar hero and made so to advertise the game. also there are bands that shouldnt be on it (buckcherry, evanescence), wrong songs by mots bands (bohemian rhapsody, communications breakdown). just be happy through the fire and flames wasnt anywhere on the list. I almost expected that as well. yeah they can play really fast but that doesnt make you good. what makes you great is the ability to do more with your skill, different styles.

Saves time when I'm flipping through the channels and it cut out those brief flashes of Bret Michaels mug when I'm trying to watch Simon & Simon and Tom & Jerry reruns at the same time. The channel's just a soap/talksoup/E network for older people who were never really into music to begin with.

The only decent things to come from VH1 were Behind The Music (which wasn't all that great) because it inspired a hilarious parody for The Simpsons; and Pop Up Video, *That* shit rocked (and I think it was also parodied briefly on The Simpsons as well).

i think that everyone should stop beating on this poor list.
everyone's views are different.
but, really, vh1...
just, no. i'm disappointed in you.
there are some good songs in here, yes.
not that i honestly expected much else.
i'd have certainly edited out most of the hair metal...
it's just so...
eh.
but pink floyd should have without a doubt have been somewhere on here.
and i was prepared to bet money on number one being stairway to heaven.
yeah, it's way over played.
but it's great. this is a list of the greatest...
it entertained me.
that was great.
i guess.

Led Zeppelin should dominate the top ten of this list. The fact that they are arguably the greatest rock band of all time, not just hard rock, alienates a small percentage of the metal fans. Though they generally love them, some don't consider them pure metal (which of course they were not). They remain a category unto themselves. Where are: Black Dog, Communication Breakdown, Immigrant Song, Dazed and Confused, Heartbreaker, Rock & Roll???? Though this list contains some great songs, it is generally weak because of the glaring Zep omissions (among others), and the inclusion of so many horrendous tunes that should not be even mentioned in company of great rock tunes.

Hard Rock is not Metal, Punk, Alt. Rock, Grunge, Post-Grunge, Prog-Rock, Blues Rock, or Southern Rock.
1. Any song by Led Zep - you fill in the blank
2. Any song by Black Sabbath
3. Any song by AC/DC
4. Valen Halen
5. Aerosmith
6. Kiss
7. Alice Cooper

PS: Is Hair Metal considered Hard Rock, Metal or Aqua Net?

everyone who thinks Led Zeppelin should be number 1- THANK YOU
The 4 masterminds of Zeppelin were the godfathers, the founders of hard rock. They should have had all top 5 songs occupied. "Black Dog" was the song that got me hooked on rock and roll when I was a kid. And where is "Immigrant Song" and "Stairway"????????
ZZ Top's "Tush" beat out "La Grange"?? Grange kicked the shit out of me when I was young. I also would have liked to see more Aerosmith (Sweet Emotion, Love in an Elevator), Sabbath, Queen (Fat Bottomed Girls, Bohemian Rhapsody), Boston. And where is Pink Floyd, and Rage Against the Machine?

Some songs that should have made the list:
War PIgs- Black Sabbath
Just What I Needed- The Cars (good song, could be considered hard rock)
What about George Thorogood??? "Bad to the Bone" is pretty kick ass
HENDRIX??????????
Mississippi Queen- Mountain
Jane- Jefferson Starship
MAYBE a Police tune???
Black Betty- Ram Jam
Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo- Rick Derringer
YYZ- Rush
Maybe a Styx tune???? "Come Sail Away"???

It has about as much credibility as Fox News broadcasting news... so please, don't get too angry that your favorite REAL HARD ROCK band made this list... cuz if it did, it would cause them to become popular and then your friend who does everything that the idiot box tells it to do will then become a 'bandwagon fan' of the band that you so righteously appreciate... how's that for a long-winded sentence :P

Welcome to the Jungle re-defined hard rock in its era, easily top ten - not number 1. I can see some of the later stuff belonging on this list. For those of you that hate The White Stripes, I personally think that "Seven Nation Army" was a good hard rocking song, whether that belongs on the list in place of say: Number of the Beast is a definite no but it is a good song none the less. I like seeing Joan Jett's reputation, I would have liked to see less Hair Metal. And I want everyone to know about the MC5's Kick Out The Jams, great selection.

That being said there are some atrocities on this list.

1. Search and Destroy is 49 and within ten spots above include Kid Rock and Poison. Search and Destroy is one of the songs that laid the foundation for Punk Rock, and it was an incredible song.

2. Remove the following bands: Whitesnake, Europe, Warrant, and for fucks sake get rid of Poison. These bands are horrible carbon copies of each other and they all suck. The fact that these bands were on the list and bands like "The Velvet Underground," "Sex Pistols," "The Doors" who made all made a significant impact on music in general and made some great hard rock tunes.

3. If there was one band that all these bands owe a great debt of gratitude to, they are not on the list: WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE ROLLING STONES? I know that some people believe hard rock is really loud guitars and people screaming into the microphones, but come on: Brown Sugar, Satisfaction, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Gimmie Shelter, all these songs are really hard rockers and they hold up better than a lot of the shit that is on the list.

4. Creed? Really? No Rage Against The Machine, no Pantera, very little Cream, but Creed belongs on the list?

5. The 80s was not the greatest time for Rock And Roll like VH1 seems to think. In 1980 John Lennon was shot and Ronald Reagan was elected President. That's not a good way to start a decade.

Here is my top ten:

10. Breaking The Law, Judas Priest
9. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, AC/DC
8. Welcome To The Jungle, Guns And Roses
7. Search and Destory, Iggy Pop
6. Highway Star, Deep Purple (Notice this is NOT Smoke on the water)
5. Won't Get Fooled Again, The Who
4. Kashmir, Led Zeppelin
3. Sweet Emotion, Aerosmith
2. Paranoid, Black Sabbath
1. Black Dog, Led Zeppelin

This list was an absolute joke, honestly.

Creed? Really? Evanescence, or however you spell the name? That's not hard rock, it's bullshit.

The Kinks' You Really Got Me shouldn't be in the list. It's an absolute genius song, but I don't consider it hard rock. It may have set the foundation for it, but it wasn't 'it.'

Welcome to the Jungle should not be number one. It's a good song, but not the number one song of hardrock. I was expecting something better, (OH, you know, Iron Man maybe? Or a Led Zeppelin song?)

Jimi Hendrix had better hard rock songs. Hey Joe isn't a hard rock song. (Purple Haze would have been better, VH1.)

The only things I was happy to see:
Steppenwolf's Born to Be Wild
Heart's Barracuda
Alice in Chain's Would?
Iron Maiden's Run to the Hills (though it shouldn't have been that high)

They might as well just have put The Spice Girls. The morons at VH1 wouldn't care. They just want to waste hours of our time. I know you can't please everyone, but you should at least try to please the majority. I didn't even watch the whole thing. After seeing Evanescence, I didn't feel comfortable watching the rest.

VH1 did an OK job with this list - I actually think they screwed up more on which songs they picked to represent the bands that were on the list, than they did of which bands should and shouldn't be on the list.

Foreigner - Juke Box Hero over Hot Blooded
Alice in Chains - Man in the Box over Would?
Motley Crue - Kickstart My Heart over Dr. Feelgood
Van Halen - Panama over Runnin' with the Devil
Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla over Don't Fear the Reaper

Mountain's Mississippi Queen should've definitely made the list, I believe Highway Star by Deep Purple deserves to be here and Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll would be Top 5 easy for me. Overall though, not too bad of a job.

I don't even know where to start with this list of disapointment, what was there 1 led zeppelin song? kasimir? and one jimi hendrix song? hey joe, has brett heard more than one jimi hendrix song in his life? hey joe in my opinion doesn't make jimi's top 5. and how can they compare led zeppelin, ac/dc, jimi hendrix with smashing pumpkins marylin manson and Evanescence. if it were up to me this list would consist of about 5-9 different bands. the bands i'm thinking of got one or two songs on vh1's list. And seriously "welcome to the jungle" is #1? personally, I would've picked led zeppelin's Black dog, Rock 'n' Roll, when the levee breaks, The ocean, Misty mountain hop, maybe even stairway. and none of those songs even made top 100. apparently those songs aren't as great as Creed, nirvana, korn, red hot chili peppers. Don't get me wrong, those aren't the only songs worthy of #1, but there are about 50 other songs more deserving than welcome to the jungle.

This list is garbage. Gun's and roses number 1.... are you kidding me. Led Zeppelin should be number 1, they basically invented hard rock and made it popular. This list is all hair metal and glam rock, which is mostly crap to begin with... the only reason most of these bands are on the list is because they are washed up and came on the show to comment so vh1 payed them back with a spot on the list. I think the fact that more then half these bands were only relevant for a few years, should disregard their impact on music.

Impossible...VH1 should NOT make lists anymore...
To those that do not know the meaning of hard rock, hard rock is anything that sounds hard, so punk, grunge, and metal are appropriate for the list. So songs like "Hey Joe", and "You Really Got Me" do not belong on the list.

"Welcome To The Jungle" at #1?!?!?! Vh1 is too pop-ish. The 80's was the worst decade for hard rock (behind the '00's). Welcome to the JUngle was a great song and is top 10 material, but NOT number one! Vh1 needs to stop thinking about 80's hair metal and needs to start thinking about GOOD music.

Why is it that each band only gets 1-2 songs on the list?! If they did that, Led Zeppelin would have, like 6 songs on the list (like it should).

Why is it that on their list of the 100 best songs of the 90's, "Enter Sandman" ranked behind "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but on this list, apparently now Enter Sandman is BETTER?

Vh1 needs to stop hosting these lists

This was voted by the public on Vh1's website... and all of these songs are cliche and all, every band here pretty much has their best known song make it, with a few exceptions, though I'm glad Megadeth fans pulled through not to have Symphony For Destruction make it. The artist I have the most problem with, though, is Iron Maiden, I just hate Run To The Hills, Hallowed Be Thy Name should've made it instead. It's decent considering it's from VH1, but horrible considering it's from us.

As ecstatic as i am that Guns N' Roses is #1 I do agree that Led Zeppelin probably should have been number one, seeing as how they basically invented the concept of hard rock, in and of itself. Personally, I like Immigrant Song, but you know..Whole Lotta Love would be suitable as well. My top five:

1) Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin
2) Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
3) You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
4) Walk This Way - Aerosmith
5) Crazy Train, maybe, or Paranoid..not sure

I am dismayed at some of the comments against GNR on here. They without question rank next to Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Aerosmith as the best hard rock bands ever. Without question. Anyone who disagrees is clearly misled. I'm not even gonna argue- there is nothing to argue about. You know, besides the fact that no one really cares about your or my opinions anyways. People are gonna think what they're gonna thinks so whatever. But, nonetheless, there were some disappointments on the list. Kid Rock and Jethro Tull on the list = complete and epic fail.

I was a Rock DJ for the span of most of this list, as well as a Musicologist and Musician (both Rock and Balladeer). Ever notice that the best ballads were done by the hardest Rock Bands?

What caused me to look up the website and the list is the obvious failings. As a music programmer, my principle job was to seek out the music that every fan could agree on as being "the best". About 30 of the above songs do not belong on the list. At least 30 songs that should be on the list are missing. Many of the above comments are bang-on, although many of the above suggestions are also only applicable to a small (although very vocal) minority.

However, that being said, I'm delighted that I came to the website because the comments I've read evoked more joy than I've felt for a very long time.

Thank you VH-1 for your many and obvious errors. ( LMAO)

well. i have wasted almost the same amount of time reading most of these inane messages as i did watching this vh1 program. while i do not agree at all with the final list, i have read that people wanted "soundgarden" or "tool". i mean cum on, really? wtf. yes there are 500 songs that belong on this list, and not one of them are "soundgarden" or "tool", not in the top 1000. the top 200 greatest hard rock songs, imho, would be comprised of less than 30 bands, and not one of them has put out an ALBUM in the last decade. call me an old fart, but the new shit out right now or recently can't blow out a fart compared to the '60's, '70's or early '80's hard rock. its that simple. the last really good year for hard rock would have been '86 or '87. the last years of hard rock. "vivid", "appetite for distruction", "electric", amazing music. i cant think of decent hard rock since then. sure there might have been a RECORD here or there, but nothing worth listening to twice. my god, i have gone through atleast 6 copies of zep4. bickering over what band belongs or doesn't, or this band had a better song than that one, is a useless waste of energy.

i do agree with those that think that vh1's list is a commercial for those stupid "i have no talent" video games. it doesn't take a columbo to figure that one out.

anyway, for what it's worth, that's my 2 cents

The Beatles - Helter Skelter should have been on this list!

Anything by GnR (while great rock music) shouldn't have been number 1 over anything by Queen, The Who, AC/DC, Black Sabbath or Led Zepplin

Creed, Evanesence, Buckcherry, Poison, etc had no right being on this list

The only use I've ever found for this kind of lists is to check which songs I'm missing in my library.

As an extra I really enjoy how some people react because his/her personal best song ever, is not in the list or number one ...

No, I didn't agree with everything on the list, but I'm just one person & there's a couple billion more around me that don't necessarily like the same tunes. I think there were way better songs by some bands that should've been included instead of what was used. But hey, maybe next time.
What some people need to realize is that there is a TON of music out there THAT DOES FIT THE PROFILE!! No, you may not agree, but the people that made the list feel that they knew what they were doing (ok I realize that most people commenting don't agree but jeez, stop whining already!!)
Yes, alot of the songs are featured on Guitar Hero (1, 2 & 3) and Rock Band ....... obviously there's people still interested in these songs & bands AND THAT'S WHY THE MAKERS INCLUDED THEM!! Popularity and marketing are the big factors, like AC/DC says "MONEY TALKS" ;) :P

And as a die-hard GN'R fan, I just gotta say ~ WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!

Those you say that people didn't made this list are right !! VH! did . Beside a couple of groups, almost no one had 2 songs in the top 100. Why ? Because the emphasis is on the group, the fame , the glory & the breakdown not the actual song ! VH1 just wants the little story on the group , otherwise , they would have put more than 2 Led Zep songs, more Priest & Sabbath songs but they would have ran out of stories so they put some 1-hit wonder/non worthy song instead !!

VH1, how can i even start other tha to say what happened? That was probably one of the worst top 100 hard rock songs list ever. You are telling me that Dazed and Confused, Midnight Rambler, When the Levee Breaks, Purple Haze, Wish You Were Here, Who Are You, Lithium, Give Me Shelter aren't even in the top 100? And that's just to name a few. What's even worse is you didn't even include THE ROLLING STONES!!! That's a sin. The Rock Gods will be after you for that one. No Pink Floyd? And only two Led Zepplin songs whats that? They were and still are the pacesetters. In fact, you should have put the whole Mothership album in there. Welcome to the Jungle for #1 really? Great job! I'm only 17 years old and this music isn't even my generation, I'm sure I could have made a better 100 list myself.

yes, this list sucks. but when you think about it, what list of songs does not? that's what i hate about people saying "so and so is the best of this" when it's just something of opinion. best actors, singers, comedians, so on, it's all opinion of whats the best. in my opinion, every way of trying to keep track of who's the greatest has failed miserably. trying track how good an artist is by top 100 lists, CD sales, Grammies won, whether or not they are in the hall of fame, or even number of fans is pointless. you should just listen to a song and not judge it by radio play or those other things. so please, stop complaining about this list. Sure, vh1 left out a massive amount of music, but they are not the final authority of what's a good song or not, no matter how much they think they are.
btw, everyone has their definition of what hard rock is. some will only accept death metal as hard rock, others are willing to go a bit softer. it seems vh1 was willing to push it really far though.
all and all, this show was more entertaining than informative, so be entertained. and never ever take a list like this as law.

Any list that has Smoke on the Water and not Highway Star is terrible. Seriously, Highway Star is better in every conceivable way. Having the easiest riff to play on a guitar does not make a song great. But, what the hell, this list is bullshit anyway. Liked the inclusion of Cult of Personality and Love Removal Machine, though. These lists always forget that it's a search for the GREATEST, not the most popular. Won't Get Fooled Again and My Generation are good songs, make no mistake, but there is no Who song in existence better than "The Real Me" off of Quadrophenia, which is arguably the best bass song ever. Also would've liked to have seen some QoTSA (No One Knows? Fucking Buckcherry made this list!) and a Metallica song that ISN'T OFF THE BLACK ALBUM. Seriously, is ...And Justice For All too much to ask? Fuck Bret Michaels, and fuck VH1.

I'm sorry, but I thought that a LOT of the songs on the countdown were in the right place. The Creed song was near the bottom (good), there were a lot of under-rated but good songs on the countdown (such as I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE) (good) and they had Andrew WK on the countdown. But heres the thing: here are my top 10:
1. Rock out-Motorhead
2. Party Hard-Andrew WK
3. Set to Fail-Lamb of God
4. Give it All-Rise Against
5. Painkiller-Judas Priest
6. My Apocalypse-Metallica
7. Question!-System of a Down
8. Psychosocial-Slipknot
9. Sweating Bullets-Megadeth
10. For Those About To Rock-AC/DC

compared to THEIR top 10:
1. Welcome to the Jungle-Guns N' Roses
2. Back in Black-AC/DC
3. Whole Lotta Love-Led Zeppelin
4. Paranoid-Black Sabbath
5. Enter Sandman-Metallica (that one is agreeable)
6. Won't Get Fooled Again-The Who
7. Smells Like Teen Spirit-Nirvana
8. Walk This Way-Aerosmith
9. Runnin' With the Devil-Van Halen
10. Ace of Spades-Motorhead

Now, keep in mind...my list was of my current favorites, not THE GREATEST!!! There also, which pissed me off, were no System of a Down or Slipknot and only 1 Metallica song on the countdown. But the main thing that pissed me off was that in the top ten, they had some of the right bands, but not the right songs by them.
1. Correct Song For Artist
2. Correct Song For Artist
3. Stairway to Heaven
4. Iron Man
5. Correct Song For Artist
6. Baba O' Reily (Teenage Wasteland)
7. Correct Song For Artist
8. Correct Song For Artist
9. Panama
10. Correct Song For Artist

One More Thing:
My Top 10 GREATEST not current favorites
1. Free Bird-Lynyrd Skynyrd (NOT 26!)
2. Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin
3. Iron Man-Black Sabbath
4. Rock and Roll All Night-Kiss
5. Back in Black-AC/DC
6. Welcome to the Jungle-Guns N' Roses
7. Enter Sandman-Metallica
8. Ace of Spades-Motorhead
9. School's Out-Alice Cooper
10. Break on Through (to the other side)-The Doors

YES! I put The Doors on there!

It was a surprise because I never expected that song woulb be the #1 because I know that song rocks the United States but I think #1 deserves to “Paradise City”. Zeppelin are the kings of hard rock........guys like Hendrix, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabath, AC/DC, Metalica, should cover all the top 10 alone. Some of those guys need more than 1 song in the top ten. GNR might break into the top 20, but #1????? Give me a break! The pioneers should rule the top 10.

A Greatest Hard Rock Songs without any Deep Purple tune is a bad joke. Those guys really changed things with Machine Head. Judas Priest and Rainbow have better songs than Breaking the Law and Since you've been gone; Iron Maiden is absent

Guns N Roses is not shit to me, I like them, but labeling one of their songs -which is my favorite of GNR catalogue, by the way- as the absolute best is out of proportion.

Marilyn Manson, Evanescence, Korn, and many others, above Jethro Tull is madness to me. I mean, tastes are not subject of rate, anyone who likes more the former than the latter deserves respect, but I can't believe specialists are outclassing such an influential song as Aqualung in this way. Can't understand why Smashing Pumpkins, Creed and Velvet Revolver -which I like- are above real hard rock bands.

Obviously, whoever made this list has a very controversial criteria.

Not gonna lie I don't get Tool but hey that's just me everyone has their own opinion. The list is lacking though. If it were authentic AC/DC and Zepp would really have taken up 20% of the list. Back in Black is the essence of what Rock n Roll is. Yeah doors are missing, stones, floyd, they need more who. Paradise City?? Highway to Hell?? I was glad to see that Motley Crue got top 20 they are band that kicks ass but gets grouped with burnout hairbands coughpoisoncough

I agree that in a perfect world the list would have been mostly Zep, Ac/Dc, aerosmith etc. And probably nothing from the last decade or 2 would have even made the list. But then how fun would that list be to watch. Even a top ten list would have different peoples opinions. So lets all take the list for what it was. It was fun to see the vignettes and comments. And I guarantee that most people have at least 80% of that music somewhere in there collection. My only gripe was that they did not pick good songs for some of the artists that were featured like Jimi for example.

The Clash...Survivor...Europe...Steppenworthless...Kid Rock....Billy Squire...are you kidding me! No Motley Crue? Why not have GWAR, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and WHAM...the list is pointless...no one who claims to be a rocker would ever make a list, much less agree to be on one. Too many types of rock, too many styles to try and represent all kinds of rock...if a list is to be made, then cut it into Hard/Metal, Punk, Speed, Hair, Acid, etc. Throwing all types into one list washes out who is truly great. No Lists - Just Play! What crap!

Listen I am guilty of liking all 100 of those songs. I however Like rock all rock, not just a specific sound that is reciprocated over and over by it and it's genre clones. however I do think this list was a list designed to sell video games. Guns we're not even big enough to out ticket sell Motey Crue that year so please stop complaining these lists are designed to generate a buzz. I will however say this Nirvana...stop, stop , stop. They are not the best band out of Seattle... Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Queensryche for god's sake!!! The most rock and roll thing Kurt Cobain ever did was die young. I think all of you people calling him original owe the Pixies and Sonic Youth a big apology. Buy the way Hard rock is not soft college study group toons. Nirvana needs to be looked at by the people who were tuned in to the music of that time not the preppy club who found an in to the drug club by pretending they were affected by the death of a musician. VH1 you and Rolling Stone Magazine owe true rock fans an apology followed by your retirement from our world and move on to the top 40 crap you really wanna talk about.

nobody will read this far on the list of comment, but anyway, i love rock music but hard rock is no real genre, just a general name for punk, metal, grunge, classic. this is just top 100 songs that your average person will recognize. dont take this list seriously. it is on the same channel that has every other show being about some slut either trying to date a celebrity or trying to learn how not to be slutty, which never works. they should just do a 100 percent viewers choice list called greatest rock songs PERIOD. this way, everyone will shut up.

2. Why's Queen all the way down at 38?

3. I was was so pissed off when I heard Bret Michaels say that Evanescence was the only band to win a grammy for best new artist!!! Linkin Park deserves to be the new artist on this list! And LP have won a grammy for their song Crawling!

4. Smashing Pumpkins has better songs than Bullet with Butterfly Wings! They could have easily gone with Cherub Rock!

5.Wrong Metallica song: Master of Puppets owns! I mean Enter Sandman is a Great song but still maybe they should put in 2 Metallica songs!!!

6. Does anyone even care about Bad Company? They really suck & Feel like Making Love isn't even a rock song! BTW, their singer ruined Queen's history when he joined them!!!

VH1 you have not got a clue. You don't know the difference between hard rock and heavy metal. Led Zeppelin define HARD ROCK... Kashmir, Black Dog, Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, Dazed and Confused, Immigrant Song etc. as opposed to You Give Love a Bad Name, Smells Like Teen Spirit (which is Immigrant Song anyway), Photograph!, Rock and Roll all Night (Kiss!!! are you kidding), Rock You like a Hurricane!! (should have been Rock n Roll by Led Zep) I am very disappointed. Do your research and come again!

No Jefferson Airplane or Rolling Stones, but you put Kid Rock, Winger and Poison on the list. Shows how much you idiots know about music. And Welcome To The Jungle shouldn't be #1. Great song, yes. Better then Led Zeppelin, HELL NO! And Queen should be AT LEAST in the top 10, not #38! Speaking of which, I see a bunch of artists/bands ranking above Queen who aren't even a fraction as good as they are, like Kiss, Motorhead, Foo Fighters, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, not to mention Slash and Axl are amateurs in front of Freddie Mercury and Brian May. I love GNR, but there's no denying that neither WTTJ nor GNR deserve to be #1. Shoulda been Led Zeppelin or Queen. But I guess homophobes rock out harder than dudes who are as gay as a daisy.

P.S. The last sentence was a dig at the GNR song "One In A Million", which if you know, was not exactly a kind homage to gays and minorities.

HARD ROCK=classic rock+various forms of metal, not music enjoyed loudly which happens to be played with drums, bass&electric guitars. I hope VH1 made a lot of money on this one from the record companies cause it blew nuts. punk and alt, which makes up almost all of what people call "rock" in today's mainstream are NOT hard rock. the list should be made up of at most 40 bands, most of which we all know and love and have made it big time. I don't care what u guys think....Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Van Halen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, GNR, and Black Sabbath own the top ten slots, if u don't like it go fuck yourself, those are the artists that rule the minds of true Hard rock fans, If u don't like it then you haven't found hard rock yet, keep looking.

I loved this list, as I do most every list program. Not that I agree with who made the list, which songs they made it with, and in what order--far from it--but because the purpose of these lists is to stimulate debate, which, to tell from this thread, is exactly what has happened.

Let's leave aside which acts are considered "hard rock," and let's even leave aside what the definition of "hard rock" is. (Wikipedia's entry is a pretty fair definition in any case: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_rock.)

What's interesting to me is the correlation between the celebrity commentators in the segments and the fact that one of their songs made the list. Was this the quid pro quo for hacks such as Sammy Hagar, Sebastian Bach, Lita Ford, Night Ranger, and Billy Squier to appear on the show and sing the praises (so to speak) of talents greater than they, that VH1 had to include at least one of their songs on the list? That is the only explanation I can think of for why, for instance, a bombastic dud like Hagar's "I Can't Drive 55," which squeaked onto the list at the very bottom, would be considered one of the 100 greatest hard rock songs.

I tend to agree with those who point out the obvious commerciality of the overall selections. But I would be surprised if it were otherwise; this is VH1, not C-SPAN, and its mission is to sell advertising--and VH1 isn't about to do that by running programming that caters to marginal tastes.

And, in actuality, the top ten picks aren't bad . . .

Kudos to Mr. Wonderful for mentioning "Oh Well" from the Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac. Interestingly, Judas Priest once covered Green's "The Green Manalishi." Did Mr. Wonderful name himself after the Kinks song of the same name?

This list was mostly a list of VERY popular (at least at one time) songs that most people would know, or at least have heard, even if they weren't fans of the bands that sing them. I watched 2 hours of the show and while I didn't know half of the bands, I have heard almost all of the song titles featured, and I think that was the point of the show. To give credit due for songs that have (and possibly will) stay with us through the ages.

Omg this list completely sucks. Welcome to the jungle is number one,yet there is no stairway to heaven, iron man, hallowed be thy name... that makes the list an automatic fail, but im going to continue anyway! Smells like teen spirit is the most overrated and uncreative piece of crap the world has ever seen! Only 2 zeppelin songs? only 2 ac/dc? only 2 sabbath? only 1 metallica? what the hell?, and where is master of puppets?? also fade to black or "one". Those are better than enter sandman. And bands like the foo fighters and green day made it over the who's my generation!? A couple other songs... you've got another thing comin, highway to hell, war pigs? Or Black sabbath(the song)! And hendrix only had one song? At number 22! Bull crap, im not even a hendrix fan but come on...no purple haze or all along the watch tower?! And apparently they think masterpieces like kashmir, crazy train, and hey joe, don't quite live up to the "awesomeness" of you give love a bad name. I go back to welcome to the jungle at number. Are you serious, its a good song but number one? Thats just disgusting. Let's be realistic here people, this list could have at minimum, 4 more ac/dc songs...about 7 zeppelin songs, and about 5 sabbath songs! Vh1 with this list is a joke because they only allow 1 song per band, except for those 5 bands who got the luxury of two.
*End Rant*

Okay, I enjoyed the show a lot, many of the songs were good. Some songs shouldn't have been on, some should've, but it's all a matter of opinion. Guns N' Roses is my favorite band, and Welcome To The Jungle is a great song, but I don't think it should've been number 1. I think either Paradise City or Sweet Child O' Mine should've been on the list and higher than Welcome To The Jungle. My pick for number 1 would have to be Crazy Train by Ozzy though. And another thing, Metallica is metal, not hard rock in my mind. Lastly, Stairway To Heaven definitely should've been on it.

the one thing everyone needs to remember this is a vote of best songs not band for those of u said that one band is better then the other need to remember that. The person who said "who said Twisted Sister beats Megadeth" ( i agree Megadeth is better) but its song not band.

This is an excellent point, nate--this list is the 100 greatest hard rock SONGS, not 100 greatest hard rock BANDS. "Genre bands"--and by that I mean bands identified primarily, if not exclusively, with a specific hard rock genre (heavy metal, progressive rock, punk, etc.)--and especially those that grind it out for a while, benefit from what I call "stick-to-the-wallishness," and by that I mean if they throw enough against the wall, something is bound to stick.

A great example of this is Grand Funk (Railroad), a hack band never in critical favour (although that didn't stop them from selling truckloads of records), but one that managed (thanks to producer Todd Rundgren) to produce a classic with "We're an American Band." Nothing else was up to that level, but for three and a half minutes Grand Funk could convince you they were terrific--the song still sticks to the wall.

But although "American Band" might be one of the 100 greatest hard rock songs, it is exceedingly difficult to make the case that Grand Funk is one of the 100 greatest hard rock bands. You could make a simiilar argument for Steppenwolf--whose "Born to Be Wild" deserves to be much higher on this list if only because it was one of the first hard rock gems, and it inspired the hordes that followed--and few others listed here, as well as those that didn't make the list such as UFO, whose stick-to-the-wall gem is "Lights Out," a driving, fast-tempo rocker enhanced by its vaguely urgent lyrics, a song that cuts quite a few on this list. But as with Grand Funk, UFO wouldn't make my list of 100 greatest hard rock bands. (Steppenwolf might, if only because of its historical impact, but that's another story.)
