Video Hangover: Ashlee Simpson - "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)"

Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. This week we present a very special bonus column about a video that premiered this week. (It's almost Christmas, give us a break.) Why can't Ashlee Simpson just leave the world alone?

"Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)"
Ashlee Simpson, 2007

Oops, I was wrong / It was Ashlee Simpson, all along / You've finally made monkey out of me!

Somebody's head was bound to explode -- I'm just glad it was hers
I'm not opposed to Ashlee in a glam unitard (at the 2:01 mark). Nor am I opposed, in theory, to Ashlee dancing the robot. But for 35 seconds? Good lord. She might dress like Debbie Harry, but she dances like Wormser from Revenge of the Nerds.

Ashlee on art
Via People: "I went to [Salvador] Dali's museum in Paris and was really inspired by the surrealism...I am five different people in the video. The real me is in therapy and then it all turns into a painting."

Ashlee Simpson is to Salvador Dali as:
a) Pete Wentz is to James Joyce
b) Garfield is to Gauguin
c) A regular pizza is to like, a mad cool melty pizza clock that's like totally in 3D
d) Nose job is to hand job

In return, we promised between 5 and 30 comments about this terrible video
Ubiquitous product placement is old news, so it's no surprise when the camera lingers (at the 1:53 mark) on the stylish Verizon VCast phone (Liz Lemon: "Can we have our money now?"). But there are some other subtle (and somewhat incongruous) plugs sprinkled throughout the video. The giant Rubik's Cube, for example, or, more shockingly, the Stereogum.com logo! There it is, perfectly framed at :41.

i am not an ashlee hater at least, i wasn't until maybe right now....in fact much to my friends' chagrin, i actually own her album. that's right! i said it!

BUT!..i felt compelled to post a comment after viewing her new video when i should have been working instead..

it looks to me like instead of visiting the Dali museum, she sat down in front of the TV and watched all of Gwen Stefani's video library and then blatantly rripped them off right down to the striped dress, the blonde wig with the heavy bangs! it was "what you waiting for" and "wind it up" all in one bad video ! BOO Ashlee! get it together!

somebody should make a mash up of RIhanna's umbrella's "ELLA ELLA AY AY" and Assholes "Ay YA YA" and just have that part in a long continous loop. If you played it over a speakerphone long enough you could have a great tool for population control as their would be mass suicides.

Maybe it's the vicodin and vodka working wonders on my head, but this was really good. Wait I am straight edge. I don't do that stuff. My body is a temple -- created by Dr. 90210. Am I talking about me or Ashlee's persona/ body... At least I share one thing in common with Jessica's sis-- were both irrelevant-- She just has better PR.

that's completely unlistenable.

my soul hurts with the knowledge that she still has a "music" career.

............well, i can un-watch it.

who the fuck directed this?!?!
it's a poor take on trying to be a fergie video, mixed with copying tegan and sara 'the con' video. also, when did ashlee start sounding like this. what would you even call this style of music. i'm so confused...and embarrassed.

i hope that the ashlee simpson on the rubix cube falls on the ashlee simpson on the couch which kills the ashlee simpson in the bed (because if you die in your dream YOU REALLY DIE, or so i hear)... then the straight-jacketed one wouldn't exist... and i think the one with those spastic-robot dance moves is already dead. multiple personality disorder is no laughing matter, missy! you only WISH you had it.

u turgid twaddlers, sneering at the Dali reference as if it was a hanging offence! Blame Ashlee for plundering Stefani's video catalogue coz u recognise the Lewis Carroll bumf but totally miss Jonathan Swift
Christ sake its a pop video not a Leonardo And it does its job fine!

Alan Ferguson directed it
