Video Hangover: Denis Leary - "Asshole"

Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. Why Video Hangover? Because when you watch as many videos as we do, you're going to feel it afterwards.

"Asshole"
Denis Leary, 1993

How about that heat?

Although I've never seen the fireman show, I've always liked Denis Leary. I don't know whether it's Comics Come Home, or the fact that he tends to be at his best on late-night TV, but he always comes across as a likable guy who is also kind of a dick (but only to people he doesn't know personally, like fat people and Republicans, so it's okay). Denis gets off to a rocking start in this, his mid-career mission statement, trying to identify the "sub-cockles" on a diagram of the human anatomy (the phrase "sub-cockles" gets me every time -- did I mention I am 12 years old?) and madly terrorizing a silicone breast (breast!). Later he dresses up as general Patton and goes on a rant about John Wayne. John Wayne? I knew the guy was old, but I'm not sure that was the most trenchant reference even in 1993. Then he and the fourth-grade history class village people sing a song, and everybody gets punched in the face. Sounds like 1993 to me.

Ha, I used to love this song. The whole Handicap rant is over the top.

Denis Leary is a plagiarizing c*** who stole all of his material from Bill Hicks...

Seems Dennis had more depth than it would've appeared those 15 years ago. The CD/Video No Cure For Cancer is a classic. Never did see any video on this until now. So thanks for that... Is there one kicking around for Irish Folk Song? Now that would be something to see..
