Video Hangover: Foo Fighters - "Big Me"
Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. Why Video Hangover? Because when you watch as many videos as we do, you're going to feel it afterwards.
"Big Me"
Foo Fighters, 1995
Oh Dave Grohl, is there anything you can't get away with?
Not sure why they're wearing rubber gloves, but...
Aside from a few moments of coy band-as-beefcake filler, The Foos basically go shot-for-shot with the original ads from :15-:45 (and again from about :53-1:23). It's a remarkably faithful performance all around, right down to the overalls and the limo-woman's maniacal grin at 1:17. The third parody, however, is somewhat less inspired (unless, of course, you count the bouncer's mustache, which is extremely inspired). The rock band commercial is a sensible (and defensible) choice, but I would much rather have watched Pat Smear add pinstripes to a suit by rolling on a freshly painted bench, or Dave Grohl make a shawl out of his dress on the way into the Grammys.
Still, they sold much better than "Rage Against The Nerds"
I know they had to choose it for PR purposes, but could there be a worse name for a candy than Footos? It sounds like a cross between Cheerios and feet.
In case you were wondering, Creed were the Footos of rock
Those of you old enough to remember the early '90s will recall the ubiquity of Mentos commercials, and their eponymous "moments". Those of you who remember 2004 will also recall that, in the early days of streaming video, it was only possible to watch one thing on YouTube: videos of idiots dropping Mentos into bottles of Diet Coke. Now, it's a damn good candy, but would anybody have picked Mentos to be a strong enough brand to carry not one, but two pop culture fads, more than a decade apart? In this way, the Foo Fighers are like the Mentos of rock: consistently underrated, wildly consistent, and still relevant after 14 years.

I miss Pat Smear. And also those commercials.

I always loved the "Everlong" video. I used to have a giant hand dream, too.

Rock music excites me more than any other music. I listen to a lot of singers. But I have a special love for Foo Fighters band. Their style has really made its way to my heart and without doubt to a lot of other Rock music. Unfortunately, I’ve a chance to watch them on stage only once because tickets are always pricy. I’ve just discovered a site to compare ticket prices for free and I find it something important because this way I can look for the cheapest price offered. You may need to use it:

I hope I could see them this summer!!!!

this was filmed in a village-like suburb in sydney, australia called kirribilli. interestingly enough, it's nestled under the sydney harbour bridge, but with the exception of a few glimpses of the bridge's massive pylons and under-structure, the ffs didn't trade on this. it would not have been possible to make it in this location over the last ten years, as the the previous australian prime minister chose to live permanently in the pm's sydney residence just around the corner - literally - and the security logistics would have been too over the top.
