Video Hangover: Jill Sobule - "I Kissed A Girl"

Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. Why Video Hangover? Because when you watch as many videos as we do, you're going to feel it afterwards.

"I Kissed A Girl"
Jill Sobule, 1995

Calm down, people, it's exactly what you think.

Get back in that closet, and make me a pie!
The song is a coy, lesbian-power anthem, but what are we supposed to make of the video's "just kidding" ending, where both women end up barefoot and pregnant (and presumably still married to their hammer-headed men)? Apparently a kiss between women, portrayed here as a subversive act of self-expression, is no match for the forces of suburban conformity, and love between girls does not conquer all. Kind of takes the edge off, no? The moral of the story: Do not mess with Fabio - he can get you pregnant just by looking.

I can't believe it's Fabio
Speaking of everybody's favorite Italian bohunk, do you think he even knows he was in a video where he was cuckolded by a chick? It's 13 years later, and he probably still thinks it was a detergent commercial or something.

She's much more gentle with the knobs on the amp
For a girl who likes kissing girls, Jill sure knows her way around a whammy bar. Until the 1:57 mark, that is, when it looks like she's trying to tear it right off the guitar. Yikes! Message received, loud and clear.

I discovered Jill's music right around the time this video was released, and she continues to be one of my favorite solo artists.

If anyone is interested in what she's up to lately, go here:

She recently blogged about this video, wishing she could release a director's cut with an alternate ending. The entry is here:

I'm interested in what this girl Jill has been up to lately. Is there some sort of website that will tell me?

For a great update of her career please read Marc Anthony's blog at;

http://city-of-dis.livejournal.com/515837.html

It is the best article I have ever read on Jill. I particularly like "I suspect Jill has been somewhat maligned due to her insistence on calling the powers that be out on their bullsh*t..."

And "The funny thing about Jill's humorous songs is that they're generally not so much funny as they are honest, and unaccustomed to hearing such honesty in song, we respond with giggles. One never gets the impression that she's set out to make us laugh, so much as she's letting life bleed into the music and the humor is part of life's scope."

I'm finding that a good litmus test of who is a fun person to talk to is if they like Jill's music. Her fanbase does not seem to include the stupid or humorless. But then you all know that. And you can help "one of America’s most prolific, original and formidable musical talents" make her next CD. God, you're lucky!

You can also find out more at Jill's web site;

Where you can find an entire 2007 concert for free. Yes, free.

Seriously. If there were only a website *devoted* to the next Jill Sobule record, then my life would be complete.

Oh well...
