Video Hangover: Mansun - "Being A Girl"

Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. Why Video Hangover? Because when you watch as many videos as we do, you're going to feel it afterwards.

"Being a Girl"
Mansun, 1998

Boys who are girls who like boys to be girls.

This is why I gave up my gym membership
Although the song is about wanting to experience "being a girl" because it's so tough being a boy, the video is more about how tough it is to experience a good workout when your idiot friends keep tweaking your junk and punching you in the face.

After the shoot, he took them for a ride in the "Love Fist" limo
Not to get all pop-up video on you, but the bench presser is none other than Danny Dyer, better known in the States as Kent Paul, Vice City's coke-addled hair-metal impresario.

Being a girl: Like being a dude, without all that eye shadow
Homosexual romp or wholesome male bonding? Your answer to this question probably depends on how your feelings about homosexual romps and male bonding (and, to a lesser extent, Keanu Reeves). Unless you're a girl, in which case your feelings will remain forever mysterious and impossible for boys to guess. Why don't you just tell me what you're thinking?

I don't remember seeing this video before, but listening to the song again made me realize that Mansun's second album would probably be much, much more successful if it came out today - this would fit nicely on a modern rock playlist next to Fall Out Boy, wouldn't it? (and I say this as a fan of the first two Mansun cds)

1. British videos, for the most part, blow.
2. Mansun was vastly underrated. (Pick up "Six" and you won't be sorry.)

Six is a masterpiece, on par with OK Computer.

I'm with Christopher - the first two Mansun albums are well worth one's time. Make sure you get the European/British editions though: in both cases the sum is greater than the parts and sequencing is really important, but the US versions were re-sequenced without the band's input.
