Video Hangover: The Murmurs - "You Suck"

Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. Why Video Hangover? Because when you watch as many videos as we do, you're going to feel it afterwards.

"You Suck"
Murmurs, 1994

Have guitar, will travel around in circles.

Compared to the Murmurs, the Indigo Girls are lazy slobs. I got tired just watching the Murmurs cavort and change clothes and -- well, that's all they do, really. But they do a ton of running with guitars, not something you see regularly out of quirky, chirpy (crappy) folksterettes. Glass half full view: This video is tremendously edited. It's starkly colorful in a way that should be much more dated than it is (clothes, hair, and post-Indigo caterwauling notwithstanding). Also, a cat gets dropped onto a cake. Cat on a cake, get it? No? You suck! As Jim helpfully put it, "I could watch cats being dropped onto cakes all day long." Hard to argue with that sentiment. Glass half empty: This song sucks, and these people are terribly annoying. The list of great videos that started with the director pointing the camera at a band and saying "let's just ad lib here" is not actually a list, because a list must include items, and there are no items on this list.

If you turn the sound down, this video plays like the longest Target commercial ever.

i'm surprised the producers of the movie 'juno' didn't try to get this song for the soundtrack. the film could've been hip, edgy, witty, poignant AND nostalgic. damn!
