And We Are Telling You About SNL

Along with rebellious meatballs, this weekend's Saturday Night Live featured The Shins, whose performance of "Phantom Limb" and a superdragged out "New Slang" didn't do anything to change our minds about their live abilities. But Jake Gyllenhaal doing his best Jennifer Hudson doing her best Jennifer Holiday on "And I Am Telling You"? That changed our mind about his falsetto abilities.

Despite knowing every little thing about Dreamgirls (Jennifer Holiday is pissed about not being involved! Beyoncé got snubbed for a Best Original Song Oscar!), we still haven't seen it. Mistake? Does Hudson really steal the film just based on that one song? The idea of Eddie Murphy turning in a statue-worthy turn is promising; he's still paying off his debt to society for his solo career -- one that Simon Cowell was too intimidated to shut down when he had the chance. Which makes Simon an accomplice "Party All The Time."

'dreamgirls' was one of the most painful movie watching experiences i've had in years. if it wins any oscars, let alone any globes, i will be very distraught.

mistake? absolutely not.

actually Dreamgirls is pretty much ONLY good when Eddie Murphy is on screen, otherwise it's a snooze fest with Beyonce's non acting.

I've always heard they were incredibly boring--which they definitely were on SNL.

The Shins are as boring as their namesake. SNL proved that yet again.

Hmm... I've never seen them live, but I thought their performance was quite good. I've certainly seen a lot worse on SNL. What in particular did you not like about it? Was it their execution or on-stage demeanor?

To this day, the Shins are the only band who have honest-to-God put me to sleep during a show.

Is it me, or does the lead singer look strangely similar to Kevin Spacey?

I watched that clip, and saw a guy who doesn't seem to enjoy performing, but who does it anyway, maybe because it's important to him. He looked like he was performing a difficult but necessary job, like a tracheotomy. On himself. It's not very pretty and it's not particularly entertaining, but it is interesting.
