Andrew Bird Gives Letterman "Fitz & Dizzyspells"

thumbnail icon: Andrew Bird Gives Letterman "Fitz & Dizzyspells"

Usually we just go for a tortured pun in the headline to these late night talk show artist performances, but this one has a modicum of truth to it; Dave was demonstrably impressed with Mr. Bird's run through "Fitz & Dizzyspells" last night. He even threw it over to Paul for corroboration, so congrats on that Dr. Stringz. On stage with a full band including rhythmic ace-in-the-hole Martin Dosh and old-timey ace-in-the-hole Rotating Gramophone Speakers, Mr. Bird likely whistled and soldiered on his way into the hearts of a couple more skinny girls with glasses here. If you weren't up late enough to watch, have at it:

That one comes from Andy's recently released Noble Beast, out now alongside its companion release Useless Creatures via Fat Possum.

OK so I'm going to be all gay on Andrew Bird but good for him! It's nice to see him get the love in front of the squares. Well done boyo!

The whistling gets me every time. Fitz and Dizzyspells is my new favorite Andrew Bird song.

Noble Beast is spinning out of control on my car stereo. Can't get enough of the Bird Man's latest.

Pretty nice performance, even the director seemed to like him because he got some nice camera time. Agreed that I can't get enough of that whistling... I actually whistled to this song at work today... whooopsss

...a fairly common nickname for one named Andrew.

I read earlier this record was supposedly "less-electric". Either way, rules.

I like this, but I find his stage persona rather annoying.

I think Dave was impressed that they got through it in one take this time. I kid, I love Mr. Bird.

Pretty nice. In a one-shot live song, I think ole Andy should always showcase his violin and his whistle. Little plucking at the beginning aside, he didn't really do the former.

All the same, nice as always. He's a fantastic live performer, and I absolutely love his stage persona.

Hmmm, but aren't all late night performances "one shot" b/c they are "live"?

right, he's saying that andrew didn't showcase his violin. i wish he would have played something else, namely "anonanimal" but the label probably made him play this one.

I'm gonna brag for a second and say that I saw him play this song for the first (possibly second) time publicly at a solo show in a 250 seat theatre in LA...

(he played a lot of noble beast stuff for the first time that night, but it was the second night of two)

Best song on the new album which is a front runner for best album of this year so far (and even though its January, there are many many good ones out there).

Does he really have to whistle on every song? I get it. He can whistle. So overdone.

Probably better he didn't play Anonanimal, because if he had they would've had to pick the audience up off of the floor.

He's sure can whistle like a bird; I appreciate that kind of ludicrous realism in an artist.

I love the new album. My girlfriend makes fun of me, though, whenever Anonanimal comes on with its "sea anenome is the enemy...". This album really does seem to be more textured than any of his other ones. It kinda reminds me of Beck's 'Mutations' in a few ways, too.

This is not hipster garbage. and I like hipster garbage mind you.

Not to start any fights....but Vampire Weekend and MGMT are hipster-y. Not so much here. This guy is classicaly trained at the violin and completely brilliant and unique in tying together his abilities in good songs. He's not your average ivy league dropout musician.

And for the record i like VW and MGMT. I'm not trying to dish on them, just to clarify what they're about.

BTW, why are you on stereogum if you think hipster music is garbage? Honestly?
