Beck Covers Velvet Underground & Nico
Beck's giving his website an overhaul. One of the new sections, Record Club, launched today with a cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sunday Morning." The idea behind the Record Club's for Beck and friends to go into the studio sans rehearsal, re-record entire albums, and then post one song a week from that session in, it seems, grainy live and layered video form. He opted to start it all with VU's absolutely essential 1967 collection The Velvet Underground & Nico, which means we'll also get to hear Beck weigh in on sadomasochism, the Factory, Downtown NYC, copping heroin, thinking about heroin, taking heroin, etc. But as he cheekily notes at the site, they almost opened by getting busy in a Burger King bathroom (not really):
[A]fter lengthy deliberation and coming close to covering Digital Underground's Sex Packets, all present voted in favor of the 'other' Underground's The Velvet Underground & Nico. Participants included this time around are Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, Brian Lebarton, Bram Inscore, Yo, Giovanni Ribisi, Chris Holmes, and from Iceland, special guest Thorunn Magnusdottir, and myself.

A 7'' labeled "Record Club" - "Sunday Morning" was sent to everyone who ordered the "uber" deluxe one foot in the grave package (shirt, vinyl, bag, album, digital download, signed poster) from the beck.com website a few weeks ago. Its still unknown if new purchases will recieve it as well : /.
on a side note, beck did incorporate "the humpty dance" in a melody of other songs during a 2002 show.

this is so good. he has kinda been off his game since guero, but even that stuff is still good, just not as good as his other music. this is the first thing hes done since guero that is REALLY REALLY good and his voice sounds amazing. glad beck is back!!!

i love beck but this is boring and pointless. and the bit about no rehearsing or planning? so everyone shows up and already knows all of the melodies and keys to the song and what instrument they play? give me a break. what about the reverb on his voice? that was sporadic? please. this is studio produced with trained musicians.

this cover sounds awful. one of the most beautifully sung lou reed tunes ever, and beck shits all over it with his sarcastic gruff drawl. i love beck and i love vu, and hopefully the rest of these will sound better but so far it's a crap pairing.

If you don't like the cover, that's cool (I like it, but that's just me), but what's with people getting angry at this? Yeah, how dare Beck and his friends cover some songs they like and release them on the internet for free! Those assholes!
Anyway... I like the psychedelic edge they gave the song - Beck really seems to be digging that kind of thing these days. It's not the original by any stretch (The Velvet Underground & Nico is one of my top 10 albums) but I'd listen to it again.

The main thing this did for me was to remind me of what a great singer and songwriter 24 year old Lou was. There is something so ethereal and magical about the original, but this cover is decent enough. I won't knock it.
I'm curious to see how Beck does with the end of the album. Few bands can pull off songs like The Black Angel's Death Song and European Son, especially any band that does not include John Cale.

I'll put down the marshmallows I"m eating to quickly add that Beck has done a descent cover. It's exciting because it's always interesting to see some of my favorite artists do covers of such classic songs as Sunday Morning. Again, not the greatest cover ever but it's not bad at all.
Oh, and on a side note, the best Velvet Underground cover was done by Nirvana with Here She Comes Now.

7.0, 6.9, 6.2, 6.6, 6.9: pf scores for the last 5 non-reissue beck releases. i'm all for taking pf favs down a notch, but i think it'd be tough to argue that they're hyping late-period beck as anything but mediocre.
anyway, i like this cover. and ditto to what lily said. faulting the guy for hanging out w/ some friends, paying some respect to great albums, and giving away the results is pretty cold. lighten up, folks!

Beck himself probably prefers the original too, so stating that is idiotic and pointless. This is a nice cover, made quickly, by Beck and his bandmates and friends. Looking forward to the rest of this album, and to see what he did with Devendra!
