Beck & Friends Cover "I'm Waiting For The Man"

thumbnail icon: Beck & Friends Cover "I'm Waiting For The Man"

Beck's Record Club project promises a series of installments in which the man and a bunch of buddies ducking into the studio sans rehearsal and knocking out a cover version of an entire album. The Hansen family band got it running with the wise choice of The Velvet Underground & Nico, and the first listen was their take on the strung-out classic "Sunday Morning." Today the crew -- which features Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, Brian Lebarton, Bram Inscore, Yo, Giovanni Ribisi, Chris Holmes, and Icelandinc "special guest" Thorunn Magnusdottir -- have upped the ante with the quintessential and anxious anthem of dope fiends everywhere, "I'm Waiting For The Man." Per Beck, with this cover "everyone untunes their instruments and nigel thrashes a dx-7, coaxing sounds hitherto unheard from the 80's power ballad beast." So there you go. Those hitherto unheard sounds bring a loopy and ramshackle strain of psychedelia to the song. The detuning and clattering percussion helps.

Sunday Morning was enjoyable. This though, while interesting, was somewhat of a disapointment. The whole idea behind the project though is still great and I look forward to hearing more.

I'm a little confused about Nigel Godrich. Isn't he producing the Radiohead album right now? Presumably that's in Oxford and Beck is in the US (California?). How does that work?

um...people can take breaks during recording? and radiohead often does take breaks in their recording? and they are not locked in a dungeon until they are finished recording?

do you think he was being rhetorical?

I took it to mean either he thought I was an idiot for asking that question or he was unsure of it himself. Most likely the former as the "locked in a dungeon" question took what I wrote to hyperbole. And this is the internet so it's important to disparage.

No, just pompous.

Beck may be talented, but the fact that he's a member of the Church of $cientology subtracts from his talent. Just my opinion. He seems like a smart guy to still be involved with this cult despite all the scandals.

Yea, it is, but it gets said both ways and I don't think it matters much anyways.

As MusclesMarinara said, a bit disappointing after Sunday Morning, but this whole project is still pretty interesting. I'm anxious to see how they will approach Heroin.

It's an interesting project and nice to see how Beck approaches these songs. I wonder if they get their inspiration from similar candy as Velvet Underground in those days to understand their stae of mind.
