Ben Gibbard Continues The Cover Love, Tackles The Mountain Goats

While we were at Radio City last night, Ben Gibbard was 90 miles down the NJ and PA turnpikes at Philly's TLA on South Street for another stop on his solo tour. Of course you know what that means: more covers! And not surprisingly, Darnielle's Mountain Goat bleat is a better fit for Ben than was Cobain's In Utero anguish. Feast yer eyes and ears on Ben doing the Mountain Goats' "Palmcorder Yanja." (Thanks for sending it in, Sam!)

For those that can't make it, tune in to NPR tonight for a live feed of Ben's set at the 9:30 Club in D.C. and stream away. What new cover will he do tonight? Guess right (before 9:30 PM EST) and ... we'll be impressed.

Ben sounds so much like John here. So much.

Sounds great. He should do a cover of a Postal Service song.

Sadly, the TLA is now the Fillmore at The TLA or I think even the Fillmore Philadelphia.

Thanks corporate America!

My guess is he will play that PS song "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" - After all the song does refer to the district of columbia.

That makes me so sad. I can't tell you how many shows I've seen in that room! If Fillmore's got its mitts in the TLA, I hope they do more than just invest in a new sign. Like maybe get a sound system that takes out the mud and distributes the low end a little better? But that's probably asking too much.

This was an amazing concert- I loved the tongue-in-cheek Thriller cover. Unlike recent Death cab shows, which were all private-school teenagers with popped collars talking through the whole show, this one was die-hard fans, totally focused, singing along. Maybe like more like Death cab shows used to be. Nostalgia aside though, he was really amazing on Wednesday. Thanks for the video!

Mr. Gibbard comes off as a gentle, earnest young man in his music and videos, but he is quite the presence onstage. Plus the dude looks like he could be a linebacker. Well, maybe a running back. Anyway, its Neat to see him laid back and strumming an acoustic.
