Billy Corgan Accidentally Celebrates Record Store Day

thumbnail icon: Billy Corgan Accidentally Celebrates Record Store Day

On Friday night, the Smashing Pumpkin took a break from rehearsals to join Mavis Staples at WTTW's Chicago Tonight 25th Anniversary Benefit. The pair sang "For What It's Worth," "Will The Circle Be Unbroken," and "I'll Take You There." SmashingPumpkins.com has pics. The next day Billy went shopping at his favorite record store, Vintage Vinyl in Evanston, IL. He didn't know it was Record Store Day, though! Just a coincidence. Billy Corgan doesn't need a holiday to support indie record stores. In this sharp-looking impromptu Q&A, a friendly Billy is asked to share thoughts on record stores anyway. He also talks about the superiority of vinyl and the drawbacks of music blogs.

As for the rest of the weekend, I can only assume he stayed in last night to watch Pay Per View with Tila Tequila.

Bonus: Marnie Stern shares her "Billy Corgan story" that's really a Courtney Love story.

There have been so many Billy Corgan posts recently. Does anybody actually care about him?

I think Stereogum is paying Corgan to boost traffic.

Couldn't agree more with his views on vinyl. Was chatting with the owner of my fave neighbourhood record store in DC on Sat, and found out they sell twice as much on vinyl as on CD.

The way forward i hope. :-))

I always find something at Som Records on 14th St NW, Crooked Beat and SMASH in Adams-Morgan, and Red Onion at 17th and T (I think). I'm guessing Tessa's referring to Crooked Beat-- I think that's the only one that still sells CDs, the rest are vinyl only.

Courtney said "If you don't let me up I'm going to do heroine WITH Kurt Cobain" not LIKE Kurt Cobain just thought I'd clear that one up. It's sad/funny...she dumped Billy for Kurt and then Kurt died, and now corgans career is dying... And Courtneys been dead on the inside for the last 15 years (or more...) :(

It's The Lovers, either :
Pardon My French or their self-titled album, we got both in Friday and Steve hasn't taken them off of the CD player yet. It's Monday and I am tired of it.

As Tim mentioned above... The background music is in fact Frogs 'N' Snails by The Lovers

Boy you people really have short memories. He's a great spokesman for the day; his comments are surely coming straight from the heart - http://stereogum.com/archives/billy-corgan-wants-you-to-buy-zeitgeist-repeatedly_005683.html

crooked beat in dc is good. it's a pity they closed revolution records...i loved that place. billy sounds surprisingly down to earth and un-douchey in this interview.

That was a surprisingly pleasant Corgan interview. What an odd man.

Yeah, he was much nicer than I expect ANY artist to be in an interview, let alone Billy Corgan. Still don't fully trust it, though. I'd bet money the girl interviewing him was really hot or something.

That's funny! I saw James Iha at Reckless Records over in Lakeview! But know one was interviewing him. I wonder which store Darcy and Jimmy were at!

I really need to proof read these sometimes.

By the way, Iha's new album came out incidentally a few days later, but I never heard much about it.
