Brace Yourself ... New Vampire Weekend Songs, Old Vampire Weekend Trailer

Did everybody pick up their copy of Vampire Weekend yesterday? Good. Now throw it out; backlash starts today.

...

Still here, eh? You must enjoy appearing uncool. Well, a treat then, for your bravery: Last night Vampire Weekend kicked off their big tour at Bowery Ballroom -- by all accounts the crowd was in love, John Norris and MTV were filming, people were dancing and stuff -- and the band veered off the Blue CD-R/debut playlist to offer up some new tunes. Here are clips of the tracks that will be comprised by the sophomore record P4K is waiting patiently to give a 1.3. Everybody got their drum machines and ska vibes ready? Then you're set for "White Skies" (Rostam says "'White Sky' as of right now" -- thanks Freshbread):

Ezra's dreamy in that Alex Turner sorta way in that video, you know? Did you miss him on guitar? Then you'll like the other one more.

This one's called "Arrows," apparently. Familiar recipe, what with the Africa and the Brooklyn and the indie. Sweet licks.

New stuff sounds good! Look at that, backlashing the backlash. Already. Fucking awesome. And thanks to Mike for hitting us with some bonusness: Vampire Weekend: The Movie. Coming Christmas 2005.

I've been backlashing against the Vampire Weekend backlash since the beginning. Just never thought about how hilarious it was till this post...do people that comment about Paul Simon really dig on his stuff that much? Seems to me like people use him just to hate on VW.

when is chevy chase gonna do a funny video with VW where he lip syncs and acts it out in a funny way?

P4K actually gave it 8.8, Paste gave it 4.5 out of 5, Village Voice liked it. Backlash schmaclash - just listen to the music and decide if you like it. Don't worry about what clothes the band wears or where they went to college.

Stop being douchebags. I get it, you are trying to be clever about them being over-exposed. It's a tired act.

Oh yeah, and PLZZZ - less Vampire Weekend posts, more John Mayer threads about his standup comedy!

HA! Oh, shit. That was funny, kevin.

Yeah, backlash starts today because you guys can't help yourself from posting about this band. Last time I checked there were some other bands releasing records. At least that's what I'm told.

I agree with Fed-Ex Pope, you guys are not funny. Did you ever think the impending "backlash" might have to do with the fact that this is boring music for 30 year old yuppies? It might be called uncool because IT IS.

That's right. Less boring music for 30-year old yuppies, more stories about Radiohead and Arcade Fire, and Feist, and...
Oh, wait...
It's a pop record, and a charming one. Is it a lot like 'Graceland'? Yep. Are they preppy college types? Yep. Is there really a 'backlash'? Dunno. Are people so bored with their own lives that they'd rip on a harmless pop band? Sadly, yep. Bring back the military draft and give you cretins something real to gripe about.

Why do people think this crap is any good? Vampire Weekend are the Indie hipster equivalent of Linkin Park.

The only excuse for Vampire Weekend's backlash is because their music is garbage.

this whole "ironic backlash baiting" is 100 times more annoying than any genuine backlash could ever be...

we get it, being self conscious of one's fleeting relevance is really cool shit, so let's run it into the ground so we can start a backlash against the fake backlash against the would-be backlash.

this all points to one glaring fact, that in truth, vampire weekend's music is simply not interesting enough to sustain these numerous, long winded updates on it's own.

To Charlie Kane:

Did you real just call Radiohead "boring music" compared to this band? I mean I don't even like Radiohead that much....but boring? Their music is like pop music from another world.

I would wager on ranking of boring music genres, indie pop ranks pretty damn high. This band probably keeps it from going stale because they add world music influences to the indie pop snore-fest.

the most boring people are the ones that make blanket statements about genres of music

I'm tired of all the in-fighting

seriously, nobody actually cares. All this hype/anger is just a product of boredom and distaste for one's job.

*shrug*

Oh I'm totally bored with my job. Honestly. But the fact that so many people would pay to see a bunch of chimps fart into a microphone excites me! To the point where I feel I MUST post about it on this website!

This band is so important and unboring! They're the first internet hype band of chimps that fart into microphones EVER!!

I predict the next big thing will be an indie band heavily influenced by flatulent chimps.

It's an untapped sound.

Is it ok to backlash against all of the preemptive backlash talk/predictions being posted by the stereogum folks? What have we come to when people feel the need to overhype the backlash? Also, has anyone heard of the Antarctic ice pop group called Backlash? Definitely a band to watch IMO.

Am I the only one who hears a direct rip-off of "Crazy Love, Vol. II" by Paul Simon in the intro/verse of "White Sky"? I'm all for tapping into one's influences, but wowzers.

That said, I still like this band a lot.
