Brian Wilson Gets Kennedy Center Honored By Lyle Lovett, Hootie

As far as we can tell, Brian Wilson didn't rap during the 29th Kennedy Center Honors ceremony. Anyone? But he did get Lyle Lovett warbling through "God Only Knows."

He looks like Gumby. Did anyone catch the broadcast of the event right after Christmas? We saw some of it. There were highlights, but it got a bit painful watching Brian often look so confused and having to sit through Art Garfunkel's long-ass narration. Worse than both combined? The ridiculousness of who the Kennedy Center selected to rock an "I Get Around"/"California Girls" medley.

Yup, Hootie. Brian seems to dig it, at least. You want "Love And Mercy"? Here's Libera. Creepy intro, kid. All said, a sorta shabby lineup. Like where was Robert Schneider?

Hey Stereogum, those last two performances are from a 2001 TNT tribute to Brian Wilson...

Is any one else's favorite part of this when they show Bush bobbling his head along? Because I almost spit out my food.

Not so In 2001 , Hootie did "Good Vibrations". "I Get Around" in 2001 was done by duo whose name escapes me.

@Larry: The original post was longer - the performances that I mentioned were removed.

Why do people keep saying those performances are from 2001? I watched the show. THIS YEAR. Hootie and the Blowfish were there. In those costumes. Singing those songs. I wasn't thrilled with Hootie being there but I liked Lyle Lovett's interpretation; I saw NOTHING wrong with Art Garfunkle's intro and the chorus at the end (boys from London) was excellent. I'm a BB groupie and I had tears in my eyes (at points) because of the poignancy in certain moments. If anything the salute to Steve Martin is what sucked.

I thought the kids choir was very good. It was a nice version of 'Love and Mercy', quite moving. It seemed to strke a chord with Mr Brian Wilson. Although the way he looks sometimes, I half expected his wife to check to see if he had a pulse, when he closed his eyes.
