Brian Wilson Brings His "Girls" To Conan

thumbnail icon: Brian Wilson Brings His "Girls" To Conan

We've kept you updated regarding Brian Wilson's That Lucky Old Sun and connected live appearances. It's not very original of me to say witnessing Wilson 2008 can be painful -- for some reason, his performance on Conan last night struck me as especially rough. Maybe because he seems happy, but also generally confused. He never uses his keyboard. He just sorta raises his hands, feels the music. When Conan thanks him he seems confused. He looked more on top of things in the Black Cab, so maybe just an off day? Brian is clearly no longer one of the greatest singers of all time, which is sadly apparent following his performance of "Forever She'll Be My Surfer Girl" when he and his Wondermints dig into "California Girls." You can watch it at Hulu.

It's sad for sure, but I suppose it's just time leaving its marks. But fortunately, even though he might not be the singer he once was, he's still a great songwriter!

I'll answer this with a parallel question: Should Michael Jordan have played with the Wizards?

No. I'd rather remember him closing his eyes and hitting 3's.........

hmm, it's a shame. i saw him at the hollywood bowl this summer and he was fantastic. i overheard a man there say brian wilson should just let professional session musicians and singer do his stuff and he just compose it (because he still can't be touched, you know?). i'm starting to agree with him.

brian wilson is like a damaged genious. anyone who can write such music is nothing less than a genious, unfortunately, years of drug abuse and a history of mental illness have robbed brian wilson of his ability to physically be the same man he used to be.
