Bright Eyes Is Generous When He's Drunk
Conor tends to fall when he's wasted. We last saw that act during Conor's Digital Ash tour at Webster '05, when he took an unintended pratfall during an overly enthusiastic slam dance. But folks at Oberst's show in Milwaukee Sunday night got the bonus boozed up Bright Eyes treatment: free guitars for all! Mirr World was on hand with details:
After finishing up one of his songs, Conor just took his guitar off, dropped it and ran off the stage. No one really knew what the hell was going on. All of a sudden you saw the tour manager dart across the stage after him. Then the tour manager darted back the other way and returned carrying a bottle of water. I would bet some good money he ran off the stage to puke because when he returned to the stage he wasn't wearing his suit coat. No one was sure if this meant the set was done and it was the encore so everyone just kind of stood there. Eventually people started clapping but it was basically just awkwardness. Eventually he came back out on stage and you just didn't know what to expect. You knew he was going to do some stupid shit and I was pretty damn excited to find out what! The rest of the band wasn’t too excited because they were all looking around thinking, “What the hell is wrong with him!?”And later...
Conor incessantly started HANDING HIS GUITARS TO THE AUDIENCE! This was so weird and hilarious. His manager had to keep running out on the stage to grab them back.Muzzle Of Bees has more:
At some point he decided to give his guitars to the crowd after each song, prompting his stage hand and manager into the crowd to retrieve the instruments constantly. For the encore he made two attempts at stage diving into the crowd and again needed to be retrieved by management/security. This happened after an altogether frightening fall from the orchestral area which for a moment looked much more serious than it eventually appeared to be.They speak truth...
He's a right mess there, but at least his nails looked fabulous!

If I were tour manager, and there was a chance that the band would be repeatedly vomiting on each other, you can bet they would all be wearing green and brown paisleys. Oh, and I would chain their guitars to their wrists with handcuffs. Oh, and I would quit my job if I was working for Conor Oberst.

I saw Bright Eyes last year and he announced to the crowd how happy he was to be playing a show in the building where they signed the Declaration of Independence. Then he fell of an amp.

i know a bunch of kids who were at this show...i tried to use this as an opportunity to turn them against bright eyes ("man, i'd be pissed if i paid for a concert and he could harldy get through it, that's not cool") but sadly their only reaction was "oh my god, i touched conor oberst!" tragic.

In last month's issue of Spin, he talked for pages about how he was sober again, and all this other nonsense about how he's changed and grown up, and I almost gained some respect for him. Guess it's back to square one.

Okay the guy has been recording music since the age of 13. Hes famous and he got drunk. Big deal. And he is not emo for those that think differently look it up. The fact is, is that he is an amazing musician, Im sure most people that have posted have been drunk at some point or another and done stupid stuff to boot. It is sad that just because he is a celebrity that he has to be perfect. I think people deserve to be drunk every once and a while.

I just wanted to post an update for anyone planning to see Bright Eyes later in the tour. This review from the Pabst made me wonder what the hell I was gonna see at the Fox in Atlanta on 5/18, but all I can say is, this was one of the best shows I've ever seen, by anyone, and I've been to many great concerts. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings did a wonderful opening set (ending with White Rabbit!); although the crowd was clearly not familiar with their music, they won them over by the end. And then Bright Eyes took the stage and it was just magical. The crowd leapt to their feet and stayed standing for the duration, which always adds to the experience in a seated venue like the Fox. The band was truly amazing and there was full orchestration, includings strings and flutes. Conor reworked many older songs--Lua was a favorite, with Gillian taking the "flask inside my pocket" verse--and all of his songs stood up beautifully to the outstanding orchestration and excellent band. This is the first time I've seen Bright Eyes where I feel Conor has truly found his stride. I guess he was working things out at the Pabst. All I can say is, he definitely had it down by the time he got to the Fox. Truly awesome show in every way!! I can't wait to see what direction he heads in next.

I agree with Diane; the show was fabulous. I liked everything about it; the all-white, the visuals behind the band, the big sound and Conor.
I wasn't very familiar with Bright Eyes before; I was there to hear Gillian and David, and I drove 300 miles to be at the show. But, Conor and company made a fan of me. I really enjoyed it and left feeling that they were some of the hardest working people in show business. They put on a great show! I'm glad I didn't read the Pabst review before I went!

I was at the Fox show as well. I have seen Bright Eyes 3 times and Gillian & David about 20 - This was an almost perfect show on every level. I was so floored and am not quick to give praise -I was waiting for Conor to screw it up. It didn't happen - it was amazing from beginning to end. Gillian & Dave have never been less than perfect and totally professional and it was great to see them play during the Bright Eyes set and looked like they were having fun. This was why I was so nervous about the Ryman show the next night, I knew that two perfect shows back-to-back would be impossible - and it was. The Ryman show was great, but by the end Conor was pretty wasted and Gillian looked a little uncomfortable toward the end and the show didn't go on as long or with as many songs with Gill and Dave. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the tour plays out...

I just love this man. Don't ask me why. I just love him. Even when I hate him, I end up going right back. I've given up trying to say he isn't amazing... because he is. He really is. His music has been with me for five years now, and it's helped me through some rough times.
Anyone who hates Conor Oberst, really needs to listen to what the man is saying. He speaks truth.
