Built To Spill Bring "Oh Yeah" To Letterman

thumbnail icon: Built To Spill Bring "Oh Yeah" To Letterman

Last night Built To Spill capped a sold-out four-show run in NYC -- two at Webster, followed by a more intimate pair at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg. I ventured out in the Noreaster for it, and, surprise, a Built To Spill show is a sorta perfect way to spend a wet and chilly night. Earlier in the day Martsch took his skull cap to the Ed Sullivan Theatre (because the Ed Sullivan Theatre is a cold Theatre) and treated television to a bit of his band's great new LP There Is No Enemy. They could have upped the mood with KILASy "Aisle 13" or the inviting "Hindsight," but true to the dreary day, instead they got existential with a downcast, spaced out, and very whammy-barred "Oh Yeah." Which was the right move. Dave thinks so, too.

There Is No Enemy is out via Warner Bros. You should see one of these shows:

10/18 - Carrboro, NC @ Cat's Cradle
10/20 - Athens, GA @ 40 Watt Club
10/21 - Memphis, TN @ Minglewood Hall
10/22 - Dallas, TX @ Granada Theater #
10/23 - Houston, TX @ Warehouse Live #
10/24 - Austin, TX @ Stubb's #
10/25 - Oklahoma City, OK @ Diamond Ballroom #
10/27 - Albuquerque, NM @ Sunshine Theatre
10/28 - Tucson, AZ @ Dry River
11/15 - Eugene, OR @ WOW Hall
11/17 - Bellingham, WA @ The Nightlight
11/18 - Vancouver, BC @ Commodore Ballroom
11/19 - Seattle, WA @ Showbox at the Market
11/20 - Seattle, WA @ Showbox at the Market
11/21 - Spokane, WA @ Big Easy

Not a very good album, but it is understandable that a veteran guitar band ran out of ideas. Decent performance.

Disagree. This album has been playing in my head for a week. I don't have any problems with their last two albums, but this one is really good.

It's their best album since Keep it Like a Secret and probably one of the best albums this year.

Very good record, actually, and getting good reviews (for what that's worth). They were great on Letterman. realo, BtoS isn't really a "guitar band," or at least they warrant several labels before that one (Alt-rock, lo-fi, etc.). It's mostly Doug Martsch's project, and he happens to be a guitar god, but a humble, understated one, as well as one hell of a songwriter. Politically good too. As for Guitar Center, if you like big business, then they are for you; if not, they aren't.

Terrible vocals. He needs to set the guitar aside and work on his voice. They look like a bunch of amateurs with a stylin' frontman. They're 2 chords short of an ending.

Doug can't fix his voice, it is gone. Sad to see one of the best indie rock bands fade away like this, the new album is nowhere near their best work, very boring generic indie rock. RIP Built to Spill

Saw them in Carrboro last night. The show was alright at best, but not because they didn't play well. I felt bad for them, the crowd was awful. Cat's Cradle usually sports a good crowd, but something was amiss last night. Some meatheads with tank tops on were starting fights and moshing right in front of the stage. It was really stressing out the band, and finally they had to stop and address it. I felt like 50% of the crowd was made up of people who just wandered into the club to drink beer and cause trouble. Anyway, the set was short and succinct, but still good. If i were them, i would have wanted to get out of there too.

This album is good, although not their best. I think these guys might be a little bit disenchanted with music right now.

I saw them in Cincinnati on the current tour and I'd agree with Carboroke saying they seem disenchanted with music. I love BTS but the show was nothing special. I chalked it up to an off night but maybe they've lost something? I still like most of the new album though.

An excllent new album and an excellent performance on Letterman. Live, the band has basically zero stage presence, but they definately aren't disenchanted with music. If they were, they wouldn't have just released their best album in a decade. This band is aging gracefully by releasing compelling new music and offering adroit live shows.

The songs are great, but they need to get Phil Ek back as producer. Doug's voice might be a little weaker, but the main problem is that he's using that really boxy delay everywhere instead of overdubbing it.
