Caring Is Creepy

Reader Calvin writes in...

To: Stereogum
Subject: the next "Garden State" soundtrack? (aka indie and popular)

Dear Stereogum,

Zach Braff picked the songs for Garden State as well as writing/directing/acting in it. Now, the soundtrack for his next movie (The Last Kiss) is listed at his website. Anyway, I thought this would fit the sort of things you post about.

Now why would we post that Calvin? 'Cause of the whole indie yuppie thing? ... OK, we'll post it.
The Last Kiss Soundtrack
1. "Chocolate" - Snow Patrol
2. "Star Mile" - Joshua Radin
3. "Pain Killer" - Turin Brakes
4. "Warning Sign" - Coldplay
5. "Ride" - Cary Brothers
6. "El Salvador" - Athlete
7. "Hide And Seek" - Imogen Heap
8. "Reason Why" - Rachael Yamagata
9. "Hold You In My Arms" - Ray LaMontagne
10. "Prophecy" - Remy Zero
11. "Paper Bag" - Fiona Apple
12. "Today's The Day" - Aimee Mann
13. "Arms of a Woman" - Amos Lee
14. "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk (Reprise)" - Rufus Wainwright
15. "Paperweight" - Joshua Radin and Schuyler Fisk
I like a lot of those artists, but after GS you'd hope for something a little less safe. More Coldplay? You lost us Braff.

the general, mild boringness of virtually all of the above artists is quite harshly magnified by their back-to-back inclusion on this lame looking soundtrack. GAP placement here we come

3 of the same artists, and I think Imogen Heap is almost the same as Frou Frou...so that's four. YAWN.
i had better hope for this s/t. say what you will, but the garden state s/t fits together right.

You know how I know Zach Braff is gay?

Cause he chose Coldplay.

agreed on the flow of the GS soundtrack. the songs went well together-

safe is the best way to describe this.

He should have included some Morbid Angel.

Well, since he didn't write or direct this one, I doubt he picked the songs.

And it's not a mixtape; the songs are supposed to fit the movie, not each other.

Zach Braff did actually choose the songs for the Last Kiss soundtrack. And in relation to compiling the Garden State soundtrack said, "Essentially I made a mix CD." Granted, that movie was sorta autobiographical - but I think the success of the soundtrack independently was definitely due to its "flow" for lack of a better word.

I have some tracks from the Last Exit soundtrack here:

Safe is a pretty accurate way to describe it, but if he keeps putting Remy Zero in movies I'll be happy enough - I loved that band.

That soundtrack looks blah to me, too, but I am so tired of the indie-yuppie dissing coming from people like that dude from Vice, who proceeds to release records from Bloc Party, Annie, and Chromeo. Ooooh, edgy!

the reason why many people enjoy the garden state soundtrack is because the music is a great companion to the film.. why don't we wait until last kiss comes out before passing judgement

From what I've heard, he contacted a bunch of other artists who weren't interested in participating in the project. Some Blog favourites actually - and while I shouldn't name names, I... jtillmankevindevinestevestpierreokkervilriver...

This is what I hear.

whatever. it's just music he likes. he picked it because, uh... he likes it. not because he was going for a soundtrack that was nothing but acceptable indie tunes.

I guess I'll have to wait to see the film to see how the songs relate to the movie, but I feel like this CD would've been a better fit with Garden State as a "music selections inspired by watching garden state" a la "Trainspotting 2 soundtrack" which was basically pointless.

I dont know, maybe Zack just needs a new CD collection.

Could it possibly be that the latest Deerhoof song just doesn't fit the movie people? The Garden State soundtrack was great, especially for the movie itself. I admit, I'm kinda surprised to see a lot of the same style music. But I'm less concerned with "more Coldplay?" than more more Coldplay wannabe types like Athlete and Snow Patrol.

Sounds like music to take an overdose of Zoloft to.

Actually Snow Patrol's first three albums were pretty good. The new one however, ugh.
And for what it's worth, I'm pretty sure they've been around a lot longer than Coldplay.

I don't doubt that Snow Patrol's music is good. Most of what I've heard is pretty decent. I just don't think it's on the level of Coldplay. And you're right, they did release one album 2 years before Coldplay's first major label release, but I've always gotten the impression that they kinda try to sound like Coldplay, at least on that Final Straw album. Not that that's illegal, just saying for the sake of choosing songs on a soundtrack. Everyone hates on Coldplay, but I'd much prefer Coldplay to all those other artists.

The music selection is pretty mediocore. Although, the trailer for the movie looks somewhat intriguing. It will be interesting to see how Rachel Bilson's acting abilities transpire from tv to the big screen.

It looks like they just compiled a bunch of artists that all play the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles. Cary Brothers, Rachael Yamagata, Amos Lee, and Joshua Radin have all had residencies there and Imogen Heap has played there and Cinjun Tate (from Remy Zero) is playing there next week. Thats basically most of the artists on the soundtrack.

Coincedence? It seems to me that one Mr. Braff likes to frequent the Hotel Cafe a little too much.

Snow Patrol's Final Straw sounded like the lead singer was putting on an almost Placebo-ish vocal, which was extremely annoying. But I'm loving that track listing. Though he did choose pretty boring Joshua Radin songs. Then again, Athlete's there and Athlete is always a good choice.

I hate "stars" that have"good" musical taste. Like it's some big deal. Honestly, lots of people (what blog are we on?) have great taste in music. Why is it that people cream their shorts when it's a slightly effeminate, skinny white boy that's on a TV show likes these bands?

ooh, the one good song by Athlete and the best of many good songs by Turin Brakes ... but I feel like this is a step away even from the "indie" music that we heard on the NJ Soundtrack.

Amos Lee? Ray Lamontagne? RUFUS? not to mention one of Snow Patrol's least interesting, if smooth sounding, offerings from their 2nd most recent CD. maybe I'm not so excited about Pain Killer (in an earlier era, my favorite song) appearing in that context.

Whilst I'm not a fan of all the picks on his list there, I missed the bit about him being required to run his soundtrack against a board of indie listeners to see if his selection had enough cred or not. yeesh.
Is there anyone I should be running my CD collection through with to see if I'm up to snuff?

besides the music, "The Last Kiss" is a total rip off of the Italian Film "Il Ultimo Baccio" (the last kiss) about 4 guys dealing with setting down.

lame~!

It looks pretty safe and lame, but I'm fine with that. You know if there was some Tapes N Tapes on there, you'd be mildly outraged. Also, Braff isn't half as indie as most people seem to imagine. I'm pretty sure he recommended Gavin DeGraw in his GS blog....

@oz - There goes Imogen Heap? Um...did you know that she has been featured on the OC no less than two times (and possibly more, I can't totally keep up)? And that she, along with the producer of her solo work, make up Frou Frou (meaning they're essentially the same)? Maybe you're the poseur?

Anyway, yeah, I kind of want to hate on it, but I love Scrubs and as far as I know, Zach Braff didn't claim he was going be releasing the indie cred soundtrack of the year. So...meh. It's expected. This is what the man likes.
