Chris Cornell And Peter Frampton Do "Black Hole Sun"

Geico spokesman Peter Frampton came alive on stage with Chris Cornell at Whildhorse Saloon a couple of weeks ago in Nashville. "Peter Frampton in the house," quips sir Audioslave. As Frampton diehards surely know, dude's been covering it solo elsewhere time again for quite some time and this particular soulful cover's from Frampton's 2006 album Fingerprints, which won Best Pop Instrumental Album at this year's Grammys. Matt Cameron (ex-Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) and Mike McCready (PJ) play on it. Still, we dig Cornell's arm-waving excitement at the opening of this one -- feels like the first time! After that, though, once they get into it, he's weirdly kinda staid. Wonder why...

Could it be because he's so used to having the song covered, that even his own takes feel like Soundgarden Jr? Via Blabbermouth:

Speaking to KansasCity.com recently, Cornell said, "My wife (Paris-based publicist Vicky Karayiannis) has the computer right now. Otherwise I would go on iTunes and buy (Frampton's version of 'Black Hole Sun'). I'm looking for music for the end of (my) show, when people are walking out. I thought I could use different versions of 'Black Hole Sun'. Before I investigated it, I counted four or five versions; there are 22.

"The weird thing is, if you put me in a time machine and sent me back to the time when 'Frampton Comes Alive' was the biggest album on the planet, when I was (about) 10, and you told me one day he would do one of your songs and say wonderful things about you — that's fantasyland, especially for someone who grew up in a place (Seattle) where you didn't hear anyone who had an impact on the rest of the planet. It makes me feel good about doing what I do."

Okay, so he claims. Without using Google, who can name even five? "Black Hole Sun"'s in Rock Band -- maybe he was counting folks playing that as official covers.

I don't have 5, but Cibo Matto did a great version first time I saw them back in '95, and it was a b side to a single from their first LP...

Paul Anka, Peter Frampton, Copeland did one on the "Punk Goes 90s" CD, and Incubus was doing the song on their tour a couple years ago.

Other than that, I think the rest are all string quartet tributes, karaoke ripoffs and/or supposedly unsigned YouTubers.
