Courtney Love Revives Hole

thubmnail icon: Courtney Love Revives Hole

It's tough not to rubberneck at the diarrhetic car crash that is Courtney Love's online presence, but between Ryan Adams-feud updates and too many typoed etcs., we've also been checking the pulse on her long overdue Nobody's Daughter LP. Advance listens of the perpetually delayed solo album -- which has run through various guises, producers, and collaborators (Linda Perry among them) -- have been occasionally promising but mostly terrible. In light of those stigmatic solo previews, Love's made a move that's transparently shrewd: Nobody's Daugher isn't gonna be a Courtney Love album after all. It's gonna be a Hole album. Don't ever let it be said she gets all her ideas from Billy Corgan. (Kidding! Let it be said all the time.)

NME has the details on the 11th hour switch in a lengthy post tracing the project's history and current standing. Some relevant details:

Micko [Larkin] will be lead guitarist, and Hole bassist Melissa auf der Maur, though working on projects of her own, has returned for backing vocals, and may play bass on tours next year. The album is as good as done, with the rest of the touring line-up for now remaining TBC.

Michael Beinhorn produced, and Hole are planning a "touring festival" of the US next year. Here's the first video journal from the studio. Its ten minutes offer precious little by way of actual album details (Melissa is coming soon to track vocals, and the Apocalyptica cello quartet will come in to add strings, and that's about it), but it does offer a .mov document of the mix of sheer ramble and utter quotability that makes Courtney one of the most amusing oversharers in music. For instance: "I'm still treated like Mike Tyson meets a porn star when it comes to my financial life, but the rest of my life is pretty fun." OK!

Makes sense! Not really! Also, this is not the first time Courtney's talked NME's ear off. Look forward to more babble from the studio in the run up to the album's release, which is sure to be imminent (no it's not). Tomorrow NME promises a track-by-track recap of what they've heard.

Hole's Nobody's Daughter is due sometime later this year or early 2010 on a label TBD. Maybe.

Melissa auf der Maur is back???...you mean nobody bought into her "rocker/metal" schtick. A no talent hanger-on if there ever was one.

as much of a joke as courtney is or has become, i can't help but feel warmed inside that a band i loved so much as a confused gay grunge kid of the 90s might actually come out with new material. i wonder who'll be the other members of this new hole will.

Lisa Lampanelli said it best i think

"Courtney Love. She called her band Hole. HOLE! Not hole as in complete. But hole as in dirty stinky pussy."

I really like the smart humor (I mean "dumb excuse for humor") that these Stereogum journalists (I mean amateurs) use for these witty (or insipid) news updates. A tip for the writers: just because you add in an "or not" or a parenthetical that ironically negates the claim you just made doesn't mean you're funny. Like...2002 called...it wants its cool detachedness (I mean boring pseudo-intellectualism) back.

The only Hole album I got into was Live Through This which was the one she released right before (or after) Kurt's death, can't remember. Back in the early to mid-90s, rock bands were still embraced by mainstream radio and MTV. Bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Nirvana were household names that even your mother knew about. And back in those days Courtney was also the hippest rock-chick because she had married the biggest rock star at the time and as the free spirit that she is (was), was known to have taken lots and lots of drugs.

Should we honestly consider this a comeback though? This is over a decade later and the landscape has changed. People in the mainstream do not even appreciate a half-talented band anymore. The music industry is in shambles. And most of all, time has taken it's toll on Curtney. I'm sure she's not currently taking any more drugs and the person that she is today is very different from the person we used to know. Nowadays, the only people that know her better are her Hollywood pals she carries in her blackberry. This whole 90s revival thing is getting out of hand... Who are all these 90s artists who feel they need to reunite in order to revive some kind of 90s nostalgia hidden within every single thirty-something roaming the earth? ? And why does it have to be Blink-182, Creed and Limp Bizkit??! Why must they have to be the ones that feel the need to do this? ? Why couldn't we get Soundgarden or Rage Against The Machine to reunite instead? Seriously.

I guess we all just have to wait and see if the new Hole album is just another Courtney Love LP disguised as a Hole album or if maybe this time around she will finally blow our minds. Time will tell.

im curious to see if this will be a bait n switch...i heard a supposed ready for release copy of nobodys daughter in april with this tracklisting:

1 pacific coast highway
2 for once in your life
3 letter to god
4 stand up motherfucker
5 loser dust
6 dirty girls
7 never go hungry again
8 nobodys daughter
9 happy ending story
10 car crash
11 sunset marquis

curious to see if these records are one in the same with some added auf der maur backing vocals thrown on top and the hole brand splashed across the front.

and is eric involved at all?

That is the Linda Perry produced album that was recorded in 2006 that Courtney ditched. A number of new songs have been recorded since then, and the old songs that will be kept for the new record have been completely re-done. It is going to be a totally different sounding album to the stuff that has leaked.

She's always been an attention w***e and she probably needs some attention and cash of course. She's only known because she was with Kurt. I don't think she's really talented. In music that is don't want to know about her other talents.

I love Courtney love and am happy to have new music from her out under any Moniker. That being said, it seems like a reunion should be like hey we met up and it felt right so we decided to record a new album, not I put together what ex members I could to add backing vocals to my already recorded album so that I can put a more attention grabbing band name on it.
